Mid Atlantic gardens not complete without our furry pals

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I hope you didn't have to go up to any of the mountain subdivisions out in Linden, Chantell. Those roads are horrible when the weather is bad. Almost all of them are owned by the subdivisions and not state maintained.

I did a double take when I saw that photo of Makwa. He looks so much like Java. It's so good to know there's a bit of Java still out there in the world making someone happy.

Java LOVED the snow. She would snuffle her nose into it, note the snow on her snout in the first picture, and then run like the wind. She loved to go for rides in the car too and was always very good.

Jello hasn't quite figured the snow out yet. What is this stuff?! LOL

Onewish, those Christmas photos are beautiful.

Hart--

That reminds me of a short story....

I don't have dogs, but when my first daughter was 2+ yrs old, we had a huge snow. I bundled her up and took her outside. It was the first time she had seen snow.
She stopped and looked at all the white stuff and said: "Mommy! Look at all that SUGAR!!!"....

I still smile when I think of that......

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh can you just imagine....a field of sugar...mmmm-mmmm!!!

Diane - actually it WAS Blue Mtn....LOL....but luckily the roads were very clear and not icy at that point...wasn't till I got to the end of PW Parkway almost to 95 that I got hit with the snow.

Boy is it cold tonight!! There's gonna be a bunch of zoomied-out dogs really sleeping tonight.

ALL four of mine KEEP wanting to be let out....OMG...gonna drive me bonkers...

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Well it's about time I got off my butt and started posting again and this thread is where I'm starting! What a bunch of cuties and I love the snow pics :) We didn't get as much snow as the rest of you, but it was enough for Phoebe to enjoy! She disappeared in the late morning and I knew just where to find her. The last snow we received she did the same thing :( Whenever there's a 'snow day' the neighborhood kids congregate on the neighbor's hill for sliding and even though she can't "see" them, she can "hear" them! The squeals of those little girls are too much for her and she can't resist. When I found her she was sitting at the bottom of the hill with their dog watching them. I wish I had my camera it was the cutest picture! When I brought her home she laid in the dining room for hours sulking because I had spoiled her fun. LOL She really needs a sister and we're thinking about getting another pup to keep her company so she won't have to leave our yard to have fun!

I'm a slacker when it comes to taking pictures but here's one that was taken last weekend. We were exhibiting at the Middleburg Symposium and took Phoebe with us, she loves the customers and they love her!

she is cute

I'm so glad Blue Mountain wasn't bad, Chantell. Marshall went to Manassas yesterday and he said the snow was a lot worse from Linden east than it was here. Linden is always where the weather changes, it's where the first mountains are coming from the east.

Gita, that's the cutest story! Aawwwwwww.

Debbie, it sounds like what you need are some little girls. LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

stayed cold today--not much sugar melting. Got to a local hill for a little sledding and to find the keys my son lost there last night- whew!!!!!

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Here's Norman, an eighteen year-old Maine coon. He sneaks outside for a minute or two, but that's it. He seems interested in the snow, he's built for it.

I love Maine coons! Especially the brown ones. I think my older cat, Gus, either is a Maine coon or has a lot of Maine coon in him. He's huge, has the pipsqueak meow, etc. He also has one blue eye and one gold/green one - very striking.

Geeze, look at the mitts on that Gus! I knew a girl (human) with two different colored eyes.

I bet that wood pile is a little shorter now. It's getting down in the single digit temps again tonight - brrrr!

That particular woodpile is long gone. It's a small one on the back porch so we have wood handy. We have a monster pile behind the garage.

He does have some pretty big paws. He's a big kitty, about twice the size of our other cat. Actually, his head is probably more than twice the size of hers.

Somebody dumped him when he was a kitten and he was starving when we found him. It didn't take him long to catch up, though.

Here's Java with Tiger a few years ago.

And here's Gus in one of his favorite sunning spots in the lavender.

Here's my big fierce watchdog, Izzy patroling the baby pool after I removed all my plants. She's only 5 lbs but she thinks she's one of the big guys.

Your Gus is beautiful. Bet he smells wonderful after laying in the lavender.

such cute babies

Here's our feline part of the fearsome duo: Sammy Fortunately, she isn't interested in my plants, just more of her food.

hart, LOL, another little "girl" puppy will do just fine :) I wish you could have heard those little girls the first time I had to go pick Phoebe up from her adventure. They had taken her home with them and had her in a room in their basement until I arrived. There must have been a half dozen little girls squealing and fussing over her. She absolutely loved it but the high pitch of their squealing was a little too much for me! LOL

claypa, love Maine coons, but what 'Mainiac' wouldn't? Norman's face looks just like the one I used to have, 'Big Cat', he was huge, over 20 lbs!!! He was a stray and we could never find a name that suited him :) He traveled from Maine to Virginia with me and was the best cat. Tried to put him in a crate for the 15 hr drive and he howled so loud I finally gave up. He just laid down between the seats in the front and was a purrfect traveler :) He was a terrific hunter and earned his keep as a nursery cat! He's been gone about 4 years now and I miss him :(

Izzy is so cute. What kind of dog is he?

The cats love that spot, Froggy. There's lavender in there and catnip and it gets sun all afternoon against the cinderblock wall of the garage, so it's nice and warm. I often come out in the summer and one or the other of them is rolling in the catnip.

They could probably use the shrill sqealing of a group of little girls at Gitmo, Debby. LOL

I'd like to get another dog at some point but on the vet's advice I'll be looking for a little boy. He said it's better to have a male and female than two females.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

More grrrreat pictures and tales.
Gosh- I have two boys and one quiet girl. I remember once giving a ride to a friends girls and thinking--yes thank you God for not giving me more than one girl AAAAIIIIIIEEEEE Just the talking nonstop!

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

hart, Izzy is part Chihuahua and part Papillion. She's a teacup, so she's only 5 lbs all grown up. I have one lavender plant, but maybe I'll try to plant some more along with some catnip so my cat can roll around in it too.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

hart, or anyone else, I'm curious - why do you think a male and female would be better than two females?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

The vet said females are more likely to fight with each other, even if they have both been spayed.

He sure is cute, Froggy. If we have a spring swap anywhere where I can get to it, I'm sure I can find some catnip plants to bring you. My cats love having their own catnip supply, although they don't seem to bother it unless they or someone else brush or break it, releasing the scent. So they tend to really glom onto the catnip along that path.

I wish I could think of the name of the lady writer in Clarke County who wrote about waking up one night and finding a mountain lion rolling in her catnip. It was hilarious.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just like female humans

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm not sure I'd want to find a mountain lion in my catnip, but I would have loved to see a picture of it. I really enjoy seeing everyone's pets on this thread. Since it's the only way we'll get to see them its fun to see all the different pets in their own habitat. I can't wait for the warm weather when we can all go out and roll in the grass or hay or whatever. Come on spring!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

The vet said females are more likely to fight with each other

Maybe that's why they're called "bitches"! Sorry, couldn't resist LOL We might have to rethink getting another female and go with a male. Phoebe won't care one way or the other, she just needs a playmate and Lucky will no doubt appreciate a break from her rough housing with him! Thanks for the heads up hart :)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Of my four - the two that get "into it" the most are Amber and Baby (2 females - both spayed). Nothing that cant' be handled - but they do test each other the most. Course I've never seen such a laid back dog as Wolfie and Makwas still a baby but Baby will willingly go on her back when playing with him...very odd dynamics in my household. I think much as to do with the disposition of the dogs in question - submissive vs. dominant personality types...ya know?

You seriously get the best head shots on your cats, Karen...amazing...love the angle...lighting...focus on the eyes, everything about them!!

Remy is beautiful. Love those blue eyes.

har har, maybe that's why human bitches are called bitches!

Remy shot is super- worth a few doggies right there

Thank you! She makes a great subject to practice on!
Her sister is just as photogenic but way too much of a ding-bat to get good photos of!

She did let me get a shot of her with the stuffies on Valentine's Day...
I may have shared this one already... if I did then sorry for repeating!

This is Skye!

She is as ditzy as the day is long!!!

I was trying to get a photo of the sisters today.
Not as clear as I's like, but pretty good as far as cooperation on their part!

The sisters are beautiful! Sweet picture and what a perfect background for those eyes :) I used to have Siamese cats growing up, one Sealpoint and one Bluepoint (sp?) - they have very unique personalities!
