oh shoot two more.. this is one of those frozen dinner steamer bowls.. this works really well cuz you can water from the side indents and keep it in a baggie.. this was full of zinnias from my mix, they are now in little water bottle planters since they grew too tall for the gallon ziplock baggie I keep this in..

Cool Debra!

I get them steamed frozen tv dinenrs too and have been savign the containers. wondere d how well they worked. Now I see they do.

If ya go to ice cream places. I know sonci has them but not sure abotu other places, but you can get the ice cream containers and they come with litle dome with hole already in top.

laughign here thinking abotu how emty the landfills would be if everybody used their contaienr s for seed sowing and how many mroe plants would be seen aroudn to beautify the country.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Star ....I have thought and wondered the same thing! Share your recycled planters with us!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

You guys should write a book. I don't do as much germinating or rooting as you do right now. But if I ever do, I will remember your recycling.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Well they can never accuse you of not recycling, Debra. I too have kept some of the containers with dome lids. I very seldom buy a frozen dinner, but maybe I will have to go through everyone's recycling bin. We have a big blue barrel for all recyclables, plastic, paper, cardboard, empty cans, etc. and I just know I'm the only one around that saves these things. What I really need is a basement, but guess my office will have to become a nursery.

Looking forward to next Saturday and the RU near Oceanside.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Was someone looking for something like this last year??

http://springhillnursery.com/incrediball-hydrangea/p/75893/

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Wow, those hydrangias are beautiful.. my mother tried to grow them years ago.. they just can't take the dry conditions here or the heat.. the colored ones don't get any color here.. way too alkaline here.

If there is anyone that is not a subscriber and does not have access to the co ops but still wants to buy some watersorb polymer crystals they are welcome to D-mail me..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Where is the link to the co op?
LK

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

for some reason, this computer will not let me copy and paste so I can't post a link.. sorry.. just go to the co ops forum and you will find the Orders 2009 Watersorb Polymer Crystals they are $4.50 per pound plus shipping... I have 165 pounds I ordered this week and will be ordering more next week. DG'ers go through a LOT of this stuff! LOL

I don't know if a lot of non subscribers might be interested... what do you all think.. should I place a classified? I was to share this opportunity with fellow DG'ers

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hey.. I am taking cuttings of my pink goldflame and my oldfashioned yellow and white honeysuckle cuttings, english ivy,
cuttings and seeds, hibiscus, peach, pink, red, plumbago imperial blue and alba white, yellow star creeping sedum, have small new plants outside I have to dig up before DH turns the garden over.. to send to any of you if interested.. also violets all colours ( they spread fast) , and yes, I am cutting some of my brug babies back to get ready to heave ho once they getoutdoors. SASE or BESE. I went to the Garden Show.after work . too many people, too many products I can get cheaper, had to walk two blocks to get there.. the Gardens were pretty ... found out the name of two trees still in their nursery pots that were given to me.. red crab apple and bradford pear.. didn't get too crazy only planted some garden peas, tall telephone sweet peas, trimmed and planted the red trumpet vine pieces, dug up some fat carrots.. transplanted some coneflowers and monarda warm and cloudy, tornadoes 45 miles north of us here, going back down to the 20's for lows next week.. I will cover anything tender that i uncovered today with the same leaves I pulled off of them since they are bagged up. If I see any seed sprouts between now and then I will cover with all the plastic dome and rectangle lids I have squirreled away and the 7 120x90 blue and red plastic table liners I dug out of our work trash bin inside.. they had a meetingin the Green Zone and threw them away after? What waste ..I also use all my used rectangle felt line vinyl table cloths from last season over my tenders when I see them come up to early.. lord I am rambling.. Bonnie Raitt was really good last night 5 stars.. all 6 ( count them) of my seedlings of Brugs are quite happy right now.. I want to toughen them up.. should I let them go play outside tommorrow?

Thumbnail by joeswife
Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Debra.. Do not , i repeat do not put the bradford pear to close to your house or in the direction where the wind will blow the smell from it towards your house. They are beautiful with color but the blossoms stick. I mean stink. It always amazes me when somethign so pretty and has such beautiful fall color smells rotten

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Good morning all! Deb, uh...you might want to read this recent DG article about Bradford Pear trees...they are not highly recommended I guess...anyway, thought you'd enjoy the read.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2164/
I've been up and at em today.....70 degrees and cloudy with a bit of rain sprinkles...I planted sedum around in my shade area, around the garden bench. Hope it takes off well.

Pegi I've been meaning to ask you how miss piggy is with her allergies now that you have her on a regimen? I hope she's itchy free these days, LOL!

Lord I have alot to do, and one lazy husband, although I love him dearly. I need help raking, cutting tree limbs, etc. and it's like pulling teeth. How I envy those of you that have gardening hubbies!

Guess I will relax the rest of the day, maybe cook T-bones on the grill, with sauteed mushies and baked potatoes, all the trimmings. Love you all, and hope you're having a great day!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

hello everyone!! popping into wave to all of you : ) Going to the flower show today. Found this pic come on spring....

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Morning all... got the cuttings from Pink Beauty squard away.. the bradford pear tree is going to my sons place down by his beach area on the lake.. I have to have shade when I fish this summer! Grilling steaks for lunch here , too.. yummy.. Kim love those blooms! I agree.. come on Spring!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

zone 5 and I have a bunch of stuff I want to winter sow. Have any of you done that before?

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

I would not sit under a pear tree to fish. When in bloom the bees are all over it and when there is fruit the wasps are thick. Those juicy pears attract all manner of stinging and biting creatures. I have a small orchard and I speak from experience. On the plus side, they also attract deer. The deer love munching on the fallen fruit.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Samantha, my little miss piggy, is still itching but not as much. I think I will give her two allergy pills since they are 10 mg. Found a card from a vet where he had written 25 mg pill cut in half twice a day. I'm going to start her on that and will report my findings.

Sunny out today so better take advantage of it as our days are going to get cooler. Have some pots I'm spray painting so they don't look so bad before I start putting plants in them. Everyone is so busy getting ready for spring.

Love this time change!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Pear tree would be up on the bank of his place to fish.. not down on the dock.. LOL.. Happ i wintersowed a ton already.. get going!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, i am confused about winter sowing. This is my list of stuff.
amaranth elephant head
blanket flower
cosmos
columine
coneflower
foxglove
hollyhock
hyacinth bean
gallardia
larkspur
marigold
mexican sunflower
moon flower vine
poppy seeds
pansies
rose of sharon
rdebeckia
wallflower
zinna
4 oclock
yarrow
I also posted on the winter sowing site, but since you live close, are there any of these plants that should not be started now? What keeps dropping temps from killing the sprouts?
I thought about putting the milk jugs up against the house in boxes on the south side, then if a really cold snap comes I can cover them. What do you do?

Hey, found the Buddah Belly seeds, I will get them out to who wanted them.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I would start the coneflower, foxglove, hollyhock ,pansies, rose of sharon, yarrow and poppy seeds in an area that you can cover if needed those are a mix of cold hardy and prenniels try a cold frame to start them .. or sow inside and transplant them all.. I just sprinkled a ton outside, if it freezes it will freeze before I get a sprout, and if I get sprouts I am ready to cover them up..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, thank you. I was so busy transplanting , cleaning the garden room, checking out bulbs that I had stored, rewrapping, labeling, and organizing seeds Sunday, and afraid I was going to mess up winter sowing, that I didn't get around to it, so that is my goal this week. All is organized (for me) and clean so I can sit and think clearly.

Found the perfect seed organizer right in my DH's garage. He has cardboard containers that are long and skinny and the front is cut lower, I happen to have about 250 odd shaped envelopes that fit in them perfectly. I wrote in the top left corner the name of the seed and then put them in alphabetical order (yeah.....and I found the Buddah Belly Seeds).

I have about 8 Buddah Belly Seeds, I know I promised AuntB some more. If you want some email me, that is the easiest way for me to keep track, otherwise I can't keep up. If I have more wants than I have I will let you know.

Have a great day everyone.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

The guys always have great organizers in the shed, garage, basement and barn. Go get 'm girls!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Debra, the seeds arrived today and I'm overwhelmed how many you sent. Thanks so much. I may have to put on magnifying to see some of the seeds they are so tiny. LOL

Organization doesn't fit into my DH's life, mine either for that matter. We never can find what we are looking for, but my gardening seeds, etc. will be organized before all else.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Pegi.. don't throw anything away in that mix bag.. those are all seeds in there.. one lady told me I sent her dirt and chaf.. and that "dirt" ( seeds) was the best part.. she said she threw it away.. my DH has no clue what being oraganised is, and neither do I.. I get organized and then unorganize myself trying to find something.. oh yes.. why is it that when they can't find anything they call you and ask where it is? I keep telling him.. I don't have a uterous (sp)anymore, and so my all seeing knoweverythings whereabouts sonar radar finder thing is gone!
Those of you that got my mix, got most of these.. ( except the roses)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh how pretty, I can't wait to get mine.

LK

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I just knew there were all sorts of flower seeds in that mix, I don't throw anything away anymore now. Had to start cleaning out stuff and that is just too hard to do. I usually don't need everything, but I want it. I just hope I get all those beautiful flowers.

I've got a younger sister who is so organized it makes me sick. ^_^ She had such a high stressed job and I don't know how she kept such a clean house with all what was going on in her life. She is retired now and still doesn't stand still. Sometimes I wonder if I really belong in this family. She is remodeling her kitchen now just to have something to keep her busy.

Anxious to start playing with my seeds now.

Pegi

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LindaKay, yours go out tommorrow!( sent another "linda" out hers last week, have about 4 more requests to go. Not at Paulines tonight, it just rained a ton here thank goodness. I got soaked but had fun putting my watering cans and jugs and buckets out under the overpour from the gutters not being cleaned out.. was worth it.. I found this picture of Pauline and I from Christmas a year ago.. her and her toothpicks!!! LOL

Good morning everybody. It's a cold day but a good day. It's been raining now for 24 hrs. Yippee! We sure did need it. I hope it rains like this next month after I put all my plants in the ground.

The dogwoods are blooming. So are the azaleas. My clematis have buds. It's virtually spring. Someone forgot to tell old man winter to take a hike. He's hanging around for a couple of more days.

I'm going to be a grammy again. Maddie, my grandbaby, is waiting for a brother or sister in Nov. Another yippee.

Have a great day. Oh, it's raining again. Niiiice.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

It sure is cold today. I took my morning walk around the farm and the wind chill is the problem. They are calling for snow by the weekend again. Maybe that is the onion snow as they call it in the Amish Country of PA..

My scented geranium cuttings have arrived and I can not wait to get them into pots. They came last night so I got the pots filled with medium and watered them so they would be completely soaked and ready today . I cut the paper off the bottom of the cuttings and put them in water overnight to give them a good drink after their long trip. I am so excited and will keep you posted on how they do.

Boy the coffee tastes good today. Hugs to all. JB

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Girls, Hi! JB, those southern ladies' are shouting Spring!.... Happ, Kathy, Debra and I are still waiting.. snow last week, rain this week and now cold temps... I'll wish for onion snow.. ?.. :) never heard that one. Joyce, please send a couple more buddah belly seeds,..... I think mine are permanently dormant ;) I did get a seedling from my brug cross! and JB, the eucalyptus is up, and I love the color already... almost blue looking.. Jeanne, Congrats on your new grand baby, besides healthy, do you want a boy or a girl? Hey, I got 100% germination on your egg tree seeds! I've got my seed starting room stabilized.. temps and humidity.. it's about 10' X 12' and has been a bird room, computer room, gift wrapping area, and office... (I like it best as a plant related area). Such a busy time... Joyce and Debra--- will give you a call SOON... all the kids home tomorrow (and I will meet my new grand PUPPY for the first time)... Debra, I'm still having a blast with the seeds you gave me... LK and any of you getting seed packs from Deb..., you will have great fun.
JB..these scented geraniums... I have one that is supposed to keep the skeeters away, is there another kind? It has an unusual scent, kind of citrusy... I also have a Vicks plant... the tag says it's an herb... it does smell like Vics vapo rub.. I'm going to try starting some plants from cuttings.. Everyone enjoy the season... will check in soon... Debra, lovely pic of you and Pauline. I planted 2 Bradford Pear trees in my front yard about 5 years ago.... they aren't the strongest tree (one got buggered up from a storm but has filled in nicely) they are pearless... covered with beautiful white blossoms in spring.. but they are fruitless (so far). Guess I better check out Karen's link.... Hi to Kim, too! Gotta get busy..

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello everyone! Jeanne, CONGRATS on the new grandbaby! You are really gonna have fun now!

Well, it was in the 80's all week last week, and I had all my plants out sunning and thriving, even planted a few in the ground. Then we had a cold front....38 at night, lots of COLD rain for the past 2 days, they say maybe all week. I'm really stressing because I want to be out planting my vegetables that NEED to be planted, badly....doggone it, I had to go out in the cold and rain and take every single plant back into the greenhouse, but at least my normally unhelpful hubby helped me on that one, LOL!

I've been doing alot of spring cleaning, and am feeling better every day. You know, taking the curtains down and washing them, etc....Sure makes you feel good to have everything fresh and clean after months of winter. Jeanne is helping me learn a little more about birds, and I am adding many houses, feeders and good food this spring. Hope your all having a great day! Love you!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey there, I am back from the trip to the base (Ft. Dix) for my monthly supply of wine and gin. That is what keeps me going besides dried cherries and lots of fruit and salads. It is so windy and cold again I want to scream ,,,
AuntB, the seeds you sent me are all sprouting. I am so excited. One of the brug is showing too. We pulled out all the old eucalyptus from last year because we want to redo the one row of plants and I was surprised, they were all alive. So, they weathered the entire winter cold and wind and snow and all that happened were they got brown. I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately you can not transplant them their roots are soooo big. I hope you have good luck with yours, They are fun to have. Be sure to put them where you want to keep them.
As for the scented geraniums, I am going out and plant them now. Go to Sunshine Hill Garden website and look at all the different ones Dawn has. I am so happy with them.
I just hope I can grow them. http://sunshinehill.momcom.net/cuttings.htm Have a great day. Did I tell you my bouginvillea came too. Logee had a special on and I could not resist. I got Blueberry Ice, Delta Dawn and Double White. Must transplant them today too. Talk later. Hugs.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

AuntB, take some leaves from the vicks plant and crush them a bit, place them in toe of nylon stocking and hang in your shower stall when taking a shower. The steam helps clear the sinus. It works great! I have tried putting some in pan on wood stove but that does not work. The shower method works great.
I love the way the plant grows in a hanging basket. It is quite different in appearance than most and the light green color is very attractive.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I never knew there were so many different geramiums, and they are so easy to grow here. I just potted up an ivy geramium and have two more to go. Will look out for different ones now.

I didn't know there was a vicks plant, great to know to help the sinus problems. I have a little portable steamer that works too. Have to learn about it now.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Karen, I spent my doing just what you did. Putting my plants back into the GH. I stress over mine too. The only plant I can't bring in is a surfinia. The wrens have decided they want it for a home. So I can just pray that it doesn't go down to 32°. The predected low of 35° or 38° depending on who you listen to, is just too close to freezing for me. I had everything out and seedlings moved in. Now the seedlings are in the workshop with the brugs. My plants were so happy to be out in the sunshine and warmth. All of my clematis have buds on them. Oh well, I do believe this will be the last hurrah for winter, if you believe the Farmers Almanac.

Bonnie I always have good luck with the egg tree seed. I'm glad you did too. We all want a boy, since we already have a girl.

Be back in a bit.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Kathy, I got the plant in Missouri last spring.. it is very bright.. I rustle it a bit when I walk by, so I get the aroma.. thx for the shower idea.. I've been sniffing eucalyptus oil, but I'll try the vicks in the shower.. Pegi, it was sold as an herb, I'll get the botanical name and post for you. Wish I could post a scratch and sniff. JB, glad the seeds are sprouting... and your bougies' sound lovely... I drool over Logee's catalog, I'll see what cha got next time I'm salivating.. ;) have been drooling over lilies in 3 or 4 catalogs, (when the ol bod is winding down on the couch) Karen and Jeanne, what a pain.. lugging pots and plants, that's just not fair. Jeanne? you move them all by your lonesome?? Good you had Jerry's help Karen... so glad you are back in the swing.. spring cleaning, even!! (still need to order my free coir, too) Jeanne, babies are so precious, girl or boy. How exciting for your whole family! Karen, supply some water for bathing and drinking as well as the flowers for attracting birds.. I just love all the little creatures outside.. well, MOST of them. I spied an Indigo Bunting in my yard once... never had and haven't since, I don't think they are known to come around this neck of the woods,.. but it was as turquoise as the Caribbean Sea... gorgeous. I even like the mean little Wrens and the Blue Jays. I'm anxious to put out my new Baltimore Oriole feeder.. Louise brought it to our Fall RU as a door prize (with food, too) and I picked it. I've seen and heard orioles here. Oh, I yearn to sit outside and soak it all up... but it's freezing here, nothing really to "absorb" out there right now...so I'll keep yearning for a while (and planting seeds and potting up brugs and drooling over catalogs). Yip, cabin fever... happens every year. Cheers JB! (got your necessary supplies.. wine and something to plant, lol..) hang in there... spring IS around the corner...really..
