She's About To.........#43
Oh my gosh, what a clever idea. I did not see that before, guess I need to pay more attention, and keep scrolling through?
Wish I had seen that before. I have it saved in my favorites now. Thanks
LK
Love those stackers! Put that instagarden in my favorites so I can look around when I have more time, as though I don't make time for doing what is important, like playing in the dirt. ^_^
My schedule has changed for today, couldn't wait to go out and play in dirt again, but started to rain. Do need the rain so have to change plans. My brugs will love some more "miracle" water. I planted my two mini roses out in front and hoping the yellow one makes it, doesn't look too healthy.
Can't find my dirt. It is covered with this cold white stuff.
sorry to hear that.. it is already 86 here today.. would melt that white stuff for you really quickly. I just opened a co-op for watersorb crystals.. guess I am going to be very busy for a while.. ordered 100 pounds from watersorb today to get things started... glad I have done this before and know what I have gotten myself into! At least I have a system already in place to handle this.. now to go out and play in my dirt a little... my roses need to be trimmed back.. they are growing like weeds! I have spring flowers coming up in lots of places.. wish I had watered more through the winter but was trying to save on the water bill.. no rain.
Linda Kay, was your post for me, hopefully, or was that about for Karen's peas. Just wanna make sure. if it for me, thanks so much. I feel so bad, my first brugs and they got bit bad. : (
That was for you, and anyone else that needed to know about them. They will come back from the bottom, and hopefully more stronger too! Let them grow, and once they get to be a few feet, then you can decide if you want to trim them or not. Most people let them grow, but a few pluck off the side growths to make them a "standard" type tree! it is up to you. Just remember that if you cut the top off, it will take longer to "Y", and bloom.
LK
Thanks Linda. Appreciate the advice. Won't do knw cuttign and when they get bigger wil get pics and then maybe ya all cna tel me if i need to prune or anything. Maybe, just maybe if I lucky I will get to see my first ever brug bloom this year. I crossing my fingerrs and hoping. : )
Starlight I saw my first bloom this year, nearly tripped over my own feet going into house to get my camera. I have noticed several buds on it now, can't go out in back without checking on her.
It is well worth the long wait for your first bloom. Then when she opens, you can stick your nose in, and take a big whiff!!! They smell so sweet! Then you get to wait another day or two, to see if she changes color or not. Most open with a pale yellow color, then change to a deeper yellow to orange, or maybe to pink! Some are white!
Enjoy.

Good Morning! Wow, everyone is so busy... Karen is it Spring down there?? Will your plants stay outside now? Tammie, I'm making a career change as well, no more sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day.. it's just not healthy.. (for me).. I've been cleaning the basement greenhouse and my seed room is in full swing.. Joyce, STILL no green on either Budha belly seed!...waiting...... You and Theresa come up with a date for Arnolds and let me know.... you're both on more of a schedule than I am, right now. I've also been chipping mortar, and still helping with the buffalo.. speaking of chipping... does anyone know??? Do buffalo chips make good fertilizer?? The owner said it is just like cattle chips... (but he's not a gardener, so I thought I'd get another opinion :) Debra, that is such a cute pic of you and Joe.. I'll post a couple pics.. this is Antique Lace, 7 blooms last night..
P.S. Kathy from MO, Welcome to the thread! I think you sent me some passion vine seeds last year... ?? I do suffer temporary bouts with CRS so I could be wrong..
AuntB, I can almost smell them from here. Can you get them a litle closer to the screen please? Why don't they have scratch and sniff screens??? LOL
LK
I would love to take credit for the passion vine, but, it was not me. I hope it is doing well for you.
AuntB, how long did it take to get that georgeous plant. I can smell it, no kidding. I just may make it, the snow is melting and now it is getting warm and muddy. I am always bitching about something I know, but at my age it is acceptable. LOL
I am hoping you are all seeing signs of Spring and keep those pictures coming , they are wonderful and make my days. Hugs. JB
... signs of spring?! My father mowed my yard the other day.. I did not think it needed it yet but he insisted.. there was some green that was getting a little tall in some places. I have fescue in places that the bermuda has not squeezed out yet so it grows year around. I miss my solid green yard in the winter like it used to be before that lousy bermuda stuff started moving in. The bermuda is still brown and mostly crispy... but I think it is starting to wake up. I wish we had had some snow.. at least it would have been moisture. Still havent clipped those rose bushes... any suggestions on how to start rose cuttings? I have one bush I would LOVE to propogate. It smells WONDERFUL! My mother would love to have one or two. I cut it back a LOT... it loves to get tall and leggy.
Almost afternoon, sun is finally out so will check on things now that it isn't going to rain for a while. There is a mini RU in Oceanside so I may be going to that. I'm excited about it as I've never been to one. Don't have anything to trade as yet, still in the early stage for me. It is on the 14th, and have a sister living out that way so good excuse to stop in for a visit. Wish I had some brug cuttings to take, but it will be a while yet before I can think of doing that. I don't make plans too far ahead of time because you never know from day to day what will happen.
The sound of a lawnmower is definitely the first sign of spring LOL
we're buying a lawnmower next Monday, so I will be too! Dr. just called and my blood sodium is back to normal now! Yippee! It's 80 here today, will be all week and I can't wait to get stuff in the ground.
Oh Karen, so glad to hear the good news! I bet you are too? Does anyone know about Dahlia's? I just bought 2 bags from wal mart. The bulbs have several large roots coming from them, and some fell off, while I was planting them. Can the seperate roots, be planted, and if so will they do anything?
LK
They will grow if they have an eye. If they do not have an eye they will just rot.
What is an eye?
Sorry for the questions, but I have no idea what an eye is? I don't normally buy bulbs, but they looks so pretty.
LK
It is a small spot where the growth happens. Sorry I really can't explain it properly. Help us someone.
Whew! we were at 86° today. The wind won't stop blowing. Somebody shut the door! All my seedlings are now in the gh. Everything that was in the GH is outside. I almost have my bedroom back. I just have a few brug seedlings left in there. I plan on planting day lilies this weekend and working beds to get ready for the brugs, clematis, butterfly bushes, Texas Star, Confederate Rose, cannas, hibiscus and whatever else I have forgotten. It has been WONDERFUL to be outside and playing in the dirt.
Bonnie, I would imagine buffalo chips would be as good as cow. You could make a fertilizer tea with some too. The Maya is beautiful as is Antique Lace. The Maya seeds you sent have germinated. The Lace is still being poky. But I can wait. I'm good at waiting.
Haven't mowed the yard yet although it could use it. But all the little wildflowers are blooming and I hate to cut them down. So for several weeks in spring the yard is full of whites, blues, purples and yellows. The butterflies and bees like them as well.
DH mowed the lawn today, but that is a year round job here. I pulled more weeds so we have a barrel of green waste going out in the morning. Waiting for seeds as I really feel like planting now. We are in for a few cool days, but standing in the sun feels really good. I didn't realize I have so many different size pots so will be busy getting them ready for plants.
Glad to hear you are you are feeling so much better, Karen. Don't forget to spring ahead this weekend, will be glad for an extra hour of light.
Pegi.. I am sending you and Linda kay seeds.. I have been kinda cluttered.. your packages have been packed for a week, but i keep leaving htem down here instead of upstairs in my work bag to mail..
Bonnie.. going to the Garden show sat or sunday.. don went today.. Joe got me a ticket from his work.. he does not want to go:(...we are going to Salina for a concert tommorrow nite.. Bonnie Raitt.. after I get up at 4am to take Joanna to ark city, go to work, get home and get ready.... gee I wish we could spend the night there. Remember those seeds you gave me.. the little wild red mg seeds? well .. lookie here..
I was getting worried that the seeds got lost along the way, Debra, but that's OK because DH finds other things to do but work on my grow light stand.
Pretty red morning glory, I had one come up last year that was white with pink edges and it was pretty but took over the entire back of my garage. I may have some seeds here, gave them to DH and he is just like me and can't remember where he put them.
Saving yogurt cups too for seeds so I should be prepared for all seeds that come my way.
Pegi, save plastic water bottles or any other plastic bottle type container and cut off top, and cut slits in bottoms for an instant planter.. if u don't have enough yogurt cups, that is..off to work!
Good Morning, sun is peeking through so might be a good day for playing in dirt. Got my last issue of "Backyard Living" yesterday. We've been informed that this will be last issue because not enough people are interested in it, can't imagine why. Full of great things, but they informed me that "Birds & Blooms" will carry some of the articles.
I picked up some plastic cups a while back and they had holes in the bottom. I guess it was some kind of game, but all I could see was a container to start seeds. My mind seems to be going in one direction now.
Hi everyone, hope you are all well and looking forward to the weather change that has come in some areas and that we are anxiously awaiting here in NJ.
I just got an email from Logee's saying they mailed my new bougainvillea order TODAY. Friday is not a good time to mail me anything alive. The last time they did that it never arrived until Tuesday and they had to replace several plants that just did not make it. They are nice about replacing damaged plants but I do not like to see the little babies being hurt in any way. They are all my babies...what a nut I am.
Anyhow, I called, because I wanted to buy their book Container Plants. I have heard so many good comments about it I wanted to have it. I am told it shows pictures of all sorts of insects, etc. plus other good info you can refer to on a daily basis without having to go online. We will see. Pray for my little bougainvilleas. Have a good evening. Hugs, JB
JB I know what you mean. They are all my little babies too. It's about time to part with some of the brugs I rooted and nurtured through the winter. I feel like I have to do home inspections of the beds they are put in at my brother's and daughter's houses. Then give detailed instructions on the care. But I will restrain myself. I'll just give the care instructions. I pray your little bogies make it.
I subscribe to back yard living too. I haven't received a notice. What about my paid subscription? I love that mag. I also subscribe to Birds and Blooms.
I 've been using my grandaughter's baby food containers for seed starts. Also the little containers from wet cat food for the stray cat. I take an ice pick and poke holes in the bottoms of them. They are the perfect size. I look at everything now for potential use in gardening.
Texasgrower, the notice came in the same packaging as the mag. They offer to send you a different one of their mags, in fact you have 3 choices. What do I know about farming, so that one is out. Since I get Birds & Blooms I opted for Country which sounds interesting. I only have 3 issues left. If you go on their web site there is an article from the editor. Why is it always one of my favorites they want to take away??? In fact, hubby always looks for Mitch the mosquito and then I send in the answer on the web site. Never won anything though.
I used to save any kind of container years ago, then ending up getting rid of them. Now I'm back to saving them again. Just found 3 small plastic containers on a shelf out in the garage, so washing them up and they will be waiting for seeds. Yes, an ice pick sure comes in handy now.
That really stinks. I loved that mag. I guess it will be Country for me too then. Well, at least there's still Birds and Blooms.
Pegi, your package went out today...if you have any questions , plz feel free to dmail me... JB, I give up on Bougs.. good luck with yours.. jeanne. I am the "save that! I mite need it" queen here in my house, and it drives hubby crazy and the kids too when they come visiting.. I also use any container that has a plastic clear lid any shape. I germinate in those..
