She's About To.........#43

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Thinking about that water pump feature with my long sink, but it must weigh hundreds of pounds LOL and it is placed up against a brick wall. I don't think I could talk DH into moving it out from that spot. He wasn't too keen on bringing it home, what a job that was. I'm getting it ready for planting now. There are pine trees on the property behind us and there are always dried pine needles laying all over. The trees are so pretty but I'd like to chop them down at times. Also they have a vine that grows over the top of fence and down my side. We try to keep it cut back but that grows so fast too.

It is a beautiful day and I'm complaining!! Have some buds on brug that I'm keeping my eye on. I think I have snails or slugs coming out at night and attacking so that means I better get the snail bait out again.

Everyone have a great day.............

Congrats Deb, yeah.......A new baby, how exciting. Now the worry begins.

Last I heard on Friday we were having flurries after midnight. Satuday morning we were having a blizzard! At my house we had HIGH winds and lots of drifting. Nothing has melted and the temps started out this morning at 12 degrees! Glad my plants were buried deep under the snow. Heard on the weather channel that it is causing havic on the Carolina's now.

Wish I would get busy and get some seeds started. I spent the weekend cleaning and didn't get done. By cleaning I mean moving my office area out into the family room and making my old office room a spare bedroom. Thought I would be done but....also decided to go thru the kitchen cabinets and organize. Since dh retired he does most of the cooking but the logic of putting things away escapes me. I am not complaining but just organizing. I almost pitched 15 plastic lids when it dawned on me they would (turned upside down) make good things to sit flower pots on.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I use plastic lids and plastic containers both to put pots in and keeps the water in and from leaking both.
I heard it snowed in KC fridaynite.. colder than cold here today and yesterday.. I started cuttigs from my hybrid roses and they seem to be doing okay.. the first three Brug seedlings are doing great.. the new three are going to be just in time for this next week of warm weather.. babies are going out for the day and in for the night then..
I have a bud on my cleodendrum, and new flushes on the Iochromas, and the Plumbago cuttings are already budding.. sure wish a Brug would bud! LOL
here is the JMG collection .. I moved them to the upstairs bedroom on a makeshift shelf..

I need some warm weather and sunshine here folks. Floods, tonadoes, thunder, lightening, and sevreal of inche sof snow in southern Al just aint cuttign it with my plants and specially my brugs.

The poor thinsg was just startign to come back up from the base after the artic 8 and 9F of artic blast. Ain't had snow liekthis since 1193 down here. Most folsk and especialyl kids have never seen snow so they had a blast.

I wonder if it cuz I stil have all my Christmas ornament swap stuff up. I haven't put any of it away yet, I like looking at the memory and creativity everyday as I go by it.

Been husslign to move plants and my peonies are up and have all my plant stands full and even had got to the point where I had to put flats on my bed and am sleepign on the couch and tonight be back down in the teens again. I goign crazy with all these changes and they talkign back to 80 which is higher than our norm for saturday now after everythign all been bit to pieces.

Awwwwww congrats Deb!!!!!!!!! A new babay isn't it exciting. Puts a smile on yoru face and a happy step in the walk. : )

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think I need a straight jacket and a padded room. The snow is still coming down, 21 hours ago it started and my poor plants that were coming up outside are all covered and will no doubt freeze. I could cuss up a storm but I will try not to. I think I will hide in the closet until it melts. God is trying to tell me something. This is where I sit and drink coffee and watch my field of flowers grow. The rest of the deck has over a foot of snow on it. The furniture is all covered. WAAAAAA! This could drive me to drink.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm sorry to hear winter will not leave some of you gals. A very pretty picture JBerger of the snow, but I know how much you want it to go away, the sooner the better. We've had some 84 degree weather, but today it was cool, no sunshine and a few drizzles of rain. I don't think I could get used to all the snow and cold any more. I have a sister in Minnesota who can't wait to go out and pull weeds too. She always has a beautiful garden, mixture of veggies and flowers.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

awww poor JB! send some of that down here.. I really think we havn't had out "winter snow" yet like we usually do..
Star! I still have my ornament swap tree up too! LOL and I aint gonna give it up! two more babies up.. boy I am gonna need a nurse in the nursery!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Morning Ladies! Coffee is on.. remember me?? lol....wanted to let you know I am thinking bout you all! Limited computer time these days and lots of pre-spring activity... just love the pics... we still have bits of snow here and there but it's supposed to warm up today and be warm the rest of the week... I will TRY to catch up with ya'll.. I've gotten several seeds planted downstairs and the little room down there is one of my fav hang-outs these days. Planted gloxinia, streptocarpus, egg tree from Jeanne, eucalyptus from JB, stevia, cigar plant, snap dragons, palms, brugs, impatiens and more... I'll wait a couple weeks to start the veggies and fast growing annuals. Karen, that set up looks great and LOOK at ALL those roots! I still haven't ordered yet. Debra, sounds like you are moving seedlings to more sun (on their pathway to going outside).. I did find the Laurentia seed you gave me.. I'm battling aphids, .. they've attacked my rooted brug cuttings!! GRRRR, but I WILL win.. (or fight them until the lady bugs can take over outside;).. The big brugs I treated with the Ortho Tree and Shrub product last summer, are not bothered with them.... I haven't treated the baby ones with it, yet. I mixed up a TBL eucalyptus oil, TBL of dish soap in a qt of water... sprayed it on them.. we'll see... Maya and Antique Lace continue to bloom... JB, hang in there, Spring really is on it's way.. Pegi, I doubt we'll get to 84 here this week, but I do plan on working on mortar chipping so a cool breeze on the warm temps will be welcome. (I put out flyers for salvage windows and doors for the greenhouse)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning AuntB, and thanks for the coffee.
Glad to see you posting, and hope your not working too hard! Sorry ot h hear you have the aphids! So far, I have not had them on my brugs. Just the one rose plant I have. They are hard to get rid of!
Take care

Morning all, I am taking a break from work. Don't tell anyone....LOL

We are suppose to hit the middle 70's Thurday. I would love to take off and open the garden room doors and spray all the bugs away, but work gets in the way......maybe I can sneak out early....
I would love to transplant some things also.

Havent' forgotten about the Buddah Belly seeds, can't find, haven't found, still looking for. I put them someplace safe....not good. LOL Have more seed pods setting on the plant so I will keep capturing them.

AuntB, the bugs are driving me crazy, but at least they are confined to the garden room this year and not my house. All the plants seem to be doing ok. I am going to resort to the Bayer application. I give. Heard from Theresa today and trying to come up with a date for Arnolds. I will keep a look out for windows for you if you don't mind hauling them back from this area.

Another lawn and garden show this weekend...yeah. It will probably be beautiful outside and I will be torn about going.

Boy good girl Versi just blooms up a storm, no matter what. What a wonderful brug.

I killed my gardenia plant.....it was in a small pot and got too dried out....makes me sad. Love that smell.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning , I survived the snow storm, and today I noticed the statice and cosmos seeds have sprouted. They have been in the flats less than a week. Amazing. The greenhouse is really doing well with the humidity and heat, so I guess that is paying off.

All the snow is still here, what melted last night turned to ice this morning and some of the roads are a mess. I am not driving or taking my walk again today. My luck I would fall and break something or slide into a pole. I went to the greenhouse this morning and am hoping the sun melts some of the snow on my deck. If I can, I think I may hit the treadmill since I can not walk. If I do not walk everyday I put on weight quickly. Little Old Chubby me.

The Phila. Flower Show started Sunday. I bet the snow put a damper on their attendance yesterday. Yet, kids were out of school and maybe some Moms took theit kids. I know when I was a kid that was like a MUST to attend the show. I loved it. I have not been there in years. Do any of yo press any of your flowers you grow? They even have a section of pressed flower designs at the show this year. Wish I could go but that will not happen.

Gotta go get busy. I am going to learn to pay bills online today. I have decided I am tired of watching the postage go up and so I am biting the bullet and teaching myself to do it.
Hugs and thanks for the coffee..

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Good Morning All:
Happgarden you will find the Buddah seeds sooner or later. I'm not the only one who puts something in a better place then forget where that place is. My one Buddha seed that did pop up is at a stand still. One long stem and 2 nice leaves, but no more growth. Maybe a little sunshine this morning will help. Same thing with my one plumeria seed. 3 nice small leaves and that's it. Getting closer and closer to getting that grow light finished, and I think it will be one of hubby's great masterpieces. LOL Not a master builder by any means.

I learned how to do my gas and light bill on line a few months back, but have to remember to post it in my check book. If I don't do it right away I'm in big trouble. Going to check in to paying a couple other bills that way. At first I was worried about doing it, your life is an open book on computer, but a friend had been doing it so I jumped on the band wagon. Now if only I can get rid of the junk mail.!!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Peg, I have Zone Alarm on my computer, plus I subscribed to Equifax last year and this year I upgraded to their Identity Theft program. They keep an eye on all of your accounts you give them and let you know if anyone is using them other than you. Once a month they email you and tell you all is o.k. and if anyone was asking about your credit. You can set your own limits.,,etc.. I did this because I had a credit card used one time , what a mess to get that corrected and now I have only one credit card for online purchases and one for other purposes. I never use my debit card except at the ATM or the bank to get cash, so I do not worry about that. The ATMs I use are secure also.
I think it is worth the money to have that security. It is such a mess to get your identity back when it is stolen and I am not going to go thru that. Also, if someone uses your credit cards and you know it, it is simple to correct. So, I am going to try it. Watch me get screwed up with all the precautions I have taken. Just my luck. LOL

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I had identity theft about 12 years ago through my bank. The bank was changing over from a different bank and I'm sure that is how it got started. They went so far as getting checks with our name on them and new account numbers. They were so busy paying different bills with OUR money. Money was earmarked toward purchasing a home someday. Major panic time for me. Once again these same people got new account numbers and keep on taking money out. In the end, our money was returned and we did end up buying our home. I know it was an inside job, but the bank won't admit it. Now there is no money in the bank so I'm OK with that. It did make me learn how to shred anything with our names on it. The police at that time didn't want to make a report because nothing was taken. Oh yes, our identity. Laws have changed a lot since then but the shredding continues.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Do not give up on the gardenia. Two years ago, we had some big problems with major weather issues and broken pipes, no electricity and no car and stuck out here with no way to get to town for days for supplies to fix things. Long story that you really do not want to hear about. My daughter had a gardenia in her bedroom. She quit using her room and slept in the living room by the wood stove. Her gardenia died from neglect. She loved that plant. She is her mother's daughter, she started watering it again and it started growing new green branches on one half. She nursed it and eventually it became the beauty it once was. It took a couple of years of care and pruning.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Pegi, how scary. Big Hug girl, you are so lucky to have recovered your loss. But that would scare me silly. Who can you trust? I think the banks are a mess and I use more than one for my CDs. I think I would be better keeping the money in a safe at home like my grandpa did. He never trusted banks. LOL How smart was he even back then?

I think today a lot of people are switching to the "I hate banks" club.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Hello everyone.. potting up my surviving brug cuttings finally.

I have to admit I have had no troubles with my bank.. have had the same checking account for 29 years with no problems.. the savings is fairly new since moving out of town and back almost 6 years ago... I pay almost all my bills on line... well, actually, I can't think of one I don't pay on line and have been doing it for years. No problems..most are set up with either auto pay or reminders so I don't miss a payment. It takes a while to get a system set up so you can keep track of it properly though. I did make a few mistakes in the beginning and it can cost... especially with those credit cards! They charge a fortune if you are late even by a day! One thing is to continue to receive your paper statements.. that way you still get your written reminder to use when paying and keeping track of things... I never use the option to turn off paper statements.

Sorry to hear about all the snow so many have received.. it is 84 here right now and sunny.. things are blooming already... bet we get a good freeze sometime to remind everything it is too soon.. was 29 on saturday night!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

What is savings?

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

savings:... the money that is about to be used to pay my bills

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL kathy.... savings.. joeswife hearing the Dl squeak when he walks from too many pennypinchings..my definition of savings? Joe

Thumbnail by joeswife
Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Ah savings is money in account til bill is due. gotcha. I have that sometimes.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Tammie, love the definition of savings.....cracks me up.
Or savings, the money I am have until the next plant comes along.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Well, my savings is not going to last long, I started a new job but realized it was not for me. I am completely burned out from nursing and this job was the last straw. I am not working as of last friday. Will start looking for something else in a few days.. anything else. Have enough from tax refund, what I made working and savings to get me through about 8 weeks. I am not spending a penny one anything I don't absolutely need. I owe one person for the beautiful rooted cuttings she sent me a couple weeks ago.. will get that out tomorrow.. otherwise... no spending! Good thing I have a freezer and house full of food so don't need anything but occasional milk and things like that and both vehicles are full of gas .. that will last for several weeks. Hall closet is full of personal care items so don't need to shop at all.. I am OK.. just paid all bills for now.. nothing due for another month... I think!

Anyone want any personalized pet blankets made? LOL! Will do paw prints... with name.. need to make enough to pay my embroidery machine payment by the middle of the month! Unfortunately, I have only found one brug design for embroidery so far.. here is a link to the design.. haven't bought it due to price.. not the best design for a brug in my book either...it is on this page.. I love this persons designs.. have some of her designs... the plumerias.

http://www.bfc-creations.com/Designs800/809TropicalBling/index.html

Good thing I bought 2 HUGE bags of potting soil last fall so I can pot up my cuttings and got halloween buckets to use as pots. Need to drill the holes in them first. I think they are between 1/2 and 1 gallon good enough size for their first pots. That is my project for today... potting and getting my few cuttings happy again.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Good luck to you. That is a daring thing to do. I have done it and it works out. It is better to be where you are happy and comfortable. There really is not job security these days anyway no matter how long you stay someplace. Those days have been over for a long time. I pray you find what you are looking for. In the mean time if you want some part time work I work for these two companies. It is going into stores and handing out free samples and sponsor product information. You work 4 to 6 hours a day and get from $12 to $30 an hour depending on who you work for and who the sponsor is.
http://www.piercepromotions.com/
http://www.stayingconnected.com/index.jsp

It is not full time work and can be sporadic income but it pays the bills while you are looking for something more permanent.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Thank you for that information.. will look into it.. I live in a smallish town.. under 100,000 some may call that small.. I do after living in Los Angeles! LOL I am stuck here for my parents. Promised them I will be here for them as long as they need me and mom will need me as long as she is alive. Told dad yesterday I have resigned myself to being the "old maid who stays to take care of her parents" I also told him that I love them and that is what I want to do for them .. I am here for them because they have always been here for me.. they are in their late 70's.. both still very active and healthy... he had just come down from off my roof re-doing some shingles that had blown off in a wind storm last weekend! Guess I will be here for a long time to come... nearly lost mom to pneumonia last easter.. you would never know now she has been sick.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Banks insure your savings up to $100,000, I think it is higher now, so I knew we would get our money back after they investigated the case. Later on we found out they have to return your money within 10 days after getting the fraud taken care of, I don't think they ever prosecruted anyone either. I'll bet banks insurance preminums are through the roof. LOL No savings now and when social security comes in so do the bills.

Spent some time working in the yard today. My back didn't give me any trouble so that is what kept me out so long. Yep, snails after the brug. I found snail poop on a branch, how dare they do that to my beautiful plant. My son brought me a dwarf desert rost plant a while back so I started repotting it. So many baby ones in one pot so I've made several pots. Agave parrasana, so the label says. Just hope I don't over water like I did with my cyclamen. Such a beautiful plant and I didn't take proper care of it.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

it's impossible to over water here when the humitidy level is typically under 10%.. it just sucks it out of everything.. glad to hear you were able to do so much gardening without the back stopping you... I know how that goes. Oh, the fact we have only had 3/10th of an inch of rain since last october makes a difference too!

I did not think about banks actually paying an insurance premium for the federal insurance.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL you live in a small town! That kind of population would be a mecca here! I live in a town of 17 and the big city where I do all of my shpooing has a population of 2400. My kids went to school in a school system that had 400 total students k thru 12.
If Pierce Promotions or Staying Connected can find work for me in this rural area they ought to have plenty of work for you.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL you really did make me laugh... my graduating high school class in 1979 was larger than that entire school system! It does put things in perspective. It sure feels small to me. My friends live 360 and 1,150 miles away. My dogs and plants keep me sane. I am so happy I found DG 2 years ago... I think it has been about 2 years... 2 1/2? I have made a lot of long distance friends on DG and learned a lot here. Never had a canna, plumeria, iris, daylily or brug before DG.. now I have lots... and killed lots too..

Mornin evrybody coffee is o so help your selves. Stil a chilly mornign but so nice not to wake up to snow or frost this morning for a change. Supposed to warm up soem today and hope it warms up enough to leave seedligns out in gh tonight.

From when we had 8 and 9F for so long at night and low temps barely in 20's durign days, my brugs go tbit bad, I mean bad, They look so sick out there with the tops all dired up and bleahed out looking.

Some of them have finally started puttign new growth out from the bottom. I wonder how big does the new growth need to be before cuttign the top back and do I cut the top all the way back down to where the new grow is coming out.

I not doign so good so far with just starting out with brugs, but have hope yet. : )

I heard on the new sabotu the Philly flower show, wish I could have gone, I love flower shows. Think I have to wait til April before the one over in Ga is on. it not very big, but hey an dshow is a good show.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello everyone! So good to see all my beautiful friends together and thinking SPRING! I spent yesterday moving plants from the greenhouse to outside, where my little flower seedlings were screaming "Thanks, Mom"! I have about 400, and they were really beginning to suffer from being indoors.

I cleaned and swept the greenhouse good. Next week I will set up all my growbags for the vegetables. I'm also using vertical stackers this year. I will be growing about 150 purple hull pea plants in one stacker of 5! I'm growing 2 stacks of Purple Hulls, one of Italian flat green beans, and one of salads and fixings.....I'm very excited about the stackers too. I'll shoot you a couple of pictures...The first one is my friends booth at his local green market. Look on the right of the picture, in the back at the humongous stacker that is bigger than them all. Those are what I'll be growing peas in, and a smaller one for the salads.

Once they start growing, I don't cut mine back, let them grow. If you don't like all the shoots coming off the side, you can pluck them off with no harm, but I let mine grow!
If you cut them back, it will make them bushier, but it will also take more time to "Y", and bloom.
