She's About To.........#43
Linda Kay, I did knick them too. AuntB gave me very good instructions.
Phyllis, I have been to that group before I came to this group. I found that just one word that was not completely accurate was almost a mortal sin. The way I was answered embarrassed me to the point of making me angry. I will not go back there again and subject myself to anymore unpleasantness. But, thank you for the thought. It was a very good suggestion.
I learned a long time ago not to talk down to anyone, even if they are less intelligent than I am. I respect most everyone who respects me.. On the other hand, if they piss me off.......forget it. I can be one mean old lady.
That incident is the reason I am on this list and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. So the moral of this story is that something good usually comes out of something bad.
I would rather be respected than smart. Hugs to all. Time to eat Chinese take out. Yummy. Nite all.
I never post there either.... but I still do read it to learn as much as I can.......LOL
That incident is the reason I am on this list and it was the best thing that could have happened to me.
That's exactly why we've all stayed here JB, this thread is the best!
I'm a lurker...and I check on the people who matter to me..
BUT I choose not to talk to rude stuck up people...
hey all, boy alot of work and chat in here.. came home from work and DH ad dug the garden plot up, but couldn't find the rake and water hose nozzle, so waited afternoon for me to come home, unknown to me, I went to one of my daughters house to visit and see my grandfurbabys, anywayz came jome and had to tear the garage up to find that stuff. sheese.. the rake he wants to use it at our sons house since he had stickers that i was raking out , i left it over there.. mr grump is going to go buy a new one YAY! I get a new half barrell to so I am going to empty it all out will have tons of bulbs, monardas, evening primrose, sedums, and who knows what else in that one.. if I had the time I would post them on the seed exchange to send off, but will just wait and put themback in the new one I guess. I made up some planters the other night from youngins..
JB, I got some Maya X ? from Bonnie too. I soaked two and didn't peel the outer cork off. I soaked and nicked one, and didn't soak or nick another two, just planted them right on top of the soil. They all have germinated. I honestly didn't expect the one I just sowed without doing anything to it to germinate, but it did and within two weeks. I also got Antique LaceXPeach Versi that I soaked and peeled and they have not germinated. I soaked and peeled RubileneXPeanut they germinated. I say all that to say this....I think it depends on the brug what is the best way to get germination. I could be wrong. But I have decided that you can sow them any way you want and they will germinate eventually. Some, I've been told, can take months to germinate. I figure if they fall to the ground in the wild and self sow in Africa, and probably will too here, they don't need my help.
Karen tell me more about bougies in the ground in our zone. I have an old big one that is in a pot that would love to stretch out. I thought they wouldn't survive our winters. I have to cut the poor thing back every fall to be able to over winter it.
Phyllis, I'm thinking if it's planted on the southside and mulched as you say, the roots would be protected. Afterall that is what needs to survive, not the top. I don't think our soil temp ever reaches 32°. If you watered it deeply before a cold snap that would help protect the roots too. I would love to put my bougie in the ground. I actually have another smaller one that is lavender in color. The big one is red.
Jeanne root some of your cuttings and try it....
You won't know till you do....
Do I take cuttings from the new growth that will come on here in a month or so, or wait for older thicker stuff in the fall? Because right now I have two sticks. It is dormant. It's so pretty when it's big and blooming. This wasn't an issue when I grew it in FL. There are some aspects of Florida gardening I miss.
they say new growth is easier to root then old..for vines..LOL Not Brugs...
They say it's best to do in the spring too...
AuntB can probably help you better with it though...
Faye, you are just full of good news. I have not seen any webs but as dry as it is inside with woodstove goin, I can believe spidermites. I do not have any miticides. I have the bayer stuff but I do not think it does anything for spider mites. I really have no way to hose them down until the weather warms up and I can take them ouside. I will spray with soap tonight. It can't hurt. None of my other plants are showing any sign of any problems.
Debra, I think the ID needed, may be a hydrangea? Not for sure, but that is what it looks like to me!
Nice going on all the babies you have!
I got your seeds, and just wanted to say THANK YOU! I can't wait to get them all planted.
Well, had one wonderful time at the RU. Beautiful home, beautiful people and great food. I acquired some plants which I will take a picture of and post later. Did acquire a brug already in a pot called Golden Lady. DH found one of the husbands to listen to his story and all had a great time. ^_^ Go to the California Gardening forum and see all the pictures other members have posted. Some really great pics too. I'm already thinking I really want to attend the next one which will be in October. Hoping I will have some plants to contribute.
Top of the morning to ye' ;) Debra, sure do enjoy your pics.. I tend to shy away from plants with stickers.. but I have owned a couple bougies before. Not sure about your ID plant, but I'd guess hydrangea... I've seen those leaves before.... FAYE! So happy to see your post up there... I've fought spider mites all winter.. I alternate "remedies" on them, but the best thing is getting them back outside so the lady bugs and other flyers can feast.. but I use the peroxide/dishsoap with water and alternate with alcohol/dishsoap and water. I also think the 3 and 1 rose "food" helps with the mites.. I also use Neem oil for them..... I've learned to expect them. Don't like them, but they don't freak me out so much anymore. 6 more weeks and they'll be outside. I'm so glad you're all having good luck with the seed I sent out. You're all more successful than me.. I have one little Antique Lace X Versi from ones I tried. But I do have more I'm waiting on. I did try crossing A.L. with Maya, but I don't think it took. (Debra, your Maya is looking G-O-O-D! Pretty!) Busy, busy weekend, all the kids were home and I met my new grandpuppy... (beagle/pug) Meet Oates... he's a very good little guy and it was so cute watching my daughter "mother" him. And all the little grammy gifts I got him were perfect.
While skimming thru catalogs I found a pic of a plant that had leaves that at least resembles the leaves you posted, Debra. It was a Lupine... maybe check the PF and see or maybe Peonies??
Thanks AuntB for the mite info. Those things have really worked me and I'll be glad to turn them over to any bug that will eat them....just so long as my Brugs aren't eaten too.
Love to all..
Hi Faye! ltns!
Bonnie: I am not going to put anything outside ntil I know it is really really spring! LOL your grandbabypuppy is adorable!
I think my noid plant is spurge, guys.. I don't know how in the heck it got there.. but it is there.. *sigh* alot up and my nanking cherry is in bloom.. ( first year) the forsythia is in full bloom, and the bridalwreath is in full bloom.. ( yummy)
the new dogwood tree is budding I can't wait for that! Anyways, i snuck a few plants outside for a FEW hours sunday and they fried.. hopefully they will come back.. shame on me! ( for subjecting them to full sun)
Some more, but forgot to add the day lilies and a blue iris, heirloom. The brug is Golden Lady and I'm anxious to get them potted up. Pregnant onion plant and I hope I'm not sorry I took it as they produce so many little ones.
It's been a big day, went to Lowe's and got some more garden soil and bag of potting soil. Had lots of mark down plants, I got a lilac vine and a coffee plant. Well now have to lelarn about them. I love lilacs and since I can't have the real thing I settled for the vine FOR NOW. The small flowers do smell like lilacs, really excited about this, but trying to figure out where I should plant it.
Park just e-mailed that they are sending the rest of the seeds I ordered. I think I'm getting in way over my head here. Have to spend the rest of the week playing in the dirt. Got some warm sunny weather.
Pegi, you have some real cool things there! LindaKay, that is the size of the first brug tree i saw up in canada which made me find one on ebay and here I am! so awsome, I have been to san antonio a few times, and the alamo and riverwalk, how wonderful it is there.. ( my dad lived in san antonio) Just got home from doing Paulines nails and toes, poor thing.. I put mentholatum all over her toes to get rid of fungus and it is going away finally! YAY! I had to use the dog nail clippers on her they are so curled..
Pegi, I would put a vine that smells good as close to a window or door with a screen as possible, in a pot with a trellis or wire support..
I have never seen a pregnant onion before LOL
awwww she and she are beautiful! gosh you got it to bloom already? what the heck am I doing wrong here!
Look at the lovey curly red hair, and that little girl with her nose in the flower is so precious!
So the angel tree in Canada stays out year round to get that big? WOW! I have never seen one that big, and I had to look two or three times to figure out what I was looking at!
It was beautiful.
Happy Saint Patricks Day!
Chantell, what an adorable little girl. Her hair is so pretty. My girls had curls like that. One still does and she keeps them real short. Drives her crazy.lol
Wow, that angel tree is magnifigant. If I had one like that I would just sit and watch it. I bet there is alot of mealy bug on that big guy. Mites too. God I hate them so much. It seems all I do it spray and wash.
I put my blueberry bushes out on the patio yesterday. It is cold and I am taking a chance of them freezing, but if I do not have them outside when the bees come I will not have berries. We have one berry farmer who has to bring in bees. The bee population is dwindling due to all the spraying they did here in the past. Now they are cleaning up their acts and are not doing as much.
Hope you all have a nice St. Patrick's Day. God Bless. JB
Happy St. Patrick's Day... Top o the morning to ye all! ;) Debra, the little planted caddy you gave me is doing great.. when moving your seedlings and plants outside, you need to gradually introduce them to the sun and wind.. full shade first and try to keep them protected from winds for a few hours.. then more hours and dappled shade and then on to more sun.. I wanted to tell you the Pink Beauty tree cutting I took last Fall when you were here has a bud on it! It's in a 5 gal bucket, less than half full of water... no bubbler (I think it gets overspray of the Recipe from spraying the rooted cuttings) I have a smaller 3 ft cutting of Versi in there with PB and the water is FULL of roots.
Oh, my goodness, Chantell, your lil little pixy with her nose in the brug bloom is adorable... look at those ringlets! SO cute!
Pegi, looks like you got some cool plants.. your epi cactus start is huge! So glad you (and DH) had a good time. LK! That is a brug to dream of for us mid-westerners... however, if one could build a greenhouse w/ a 20ft ceiling... hmmm.. it's gorgeous.
Debra - believe me none of the brugs that have over wintered in my living room have blooms...LOL...this was the doing of the gal that gave her to me, I'm sure.
JB - ugh spider mites - I've grown to REALLY really dislike them this winter!!
Speaking of which - I'm sure ya'll have been asked more time then you wish to count - what short of nuclear means works to eradicate those nasty little creatures? I've used a witches brew consisting of: neem, Murphy's Soap, tea tree oil...sometimes adding alcohol. I really prefer avoiding the major toxic route but these guys are worse then Freddy Krugar (sp?) they just keep coming back.

No spider mites that I was aware of, and I got pretty close! it looked pretty healthy. I wish I could have gotten a cutting, but was leary of getting caught. Too many employees in red coats watching!
I don't have spider mites here, so I can't tell you what works.
Dang I did it again, started typing scrolled up and looked at a picture and lost my whole post.....darn!
I can't seem to stop spider mites in the winter. Course I am not good at spraying the receipe as often as I probably should. I am trying lady bugs in the garden room. For a while I never saw them eating the mites but the last few weeks I find lady bugs on the brugs just munching a way. Yeah.
What a cutie elf and bloom......a doll.
AuntB, did your epi catus ever bloom? Mine has lots of new leaves but no blooms. Some one else was kind enough to share a couple of starts of another and it took for ever to get a few little hairy roots.
Pegi, what are those onion looking bulbs? I have 2 of those and have no idea what they are. I am sure at one time or another I had the name but lost it.
AuntB and Debra when are you guys ready to go plant looking, and junking? Arnolds, AuntB's favorite place, Theresa wants to go by Waters Edge in Lawrence, (course Theresa and I can always stop by there on our way home), and anywhere else anyone knows. Theresa says she is going to hold back on buying she is worried about her job but told her it never cost to look.
Beautiful day here wish I was home.....top of the morning to you all!
