Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

You are too young to have a granddaughter! Are you serious!!!

Tazetta is just one of the many Daffodil groups....there are only a few kinds that will come back in southern climates like mine, and this is one of them.

Hey, how often do you water your hoyas? I never really know what to do.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, tazetta is a category of daff. especially suitable for warmer climes. I didn't realize they were frag. I need to sniff mine.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Rob, where did you get your Tazettas?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

If I may answer, I get mine thru ColorBlends. You have to order in june for fall delivery. they sell out fast, esp. the southern ones as all of us want them. Old house Gardens has them, excellent quality but can be pricey. Blooming bulbs also is a good source.

I was wondering...thank you all for clearing that up for me. Yes love the scent of the Daffy's...mine are just ready to open right now. The single's scent is so much nicer then the "fluffy" ones (showing my IQ w/that terminology aren't I? LOL)
Roberta - you are too kind...believe me...I'm 44...my youngest is just about 17 - my oldest 22 (although it pains me to admit...LOL)
Hoyas, in my exp, do not like being over watered. If you miss a watering they don't care but on avg. I dump water in them 1x/week. They're the easiest plant I have other then my jades.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Ha! I think I've been overwatering!

4F4, I got my Tazettas from Brent & Beckys last fall. I'm very happy with them!!! Vossner, let us know if yours is fragrant too. This one is "head spinning" fragrant, I had no idea!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I will. I forgot about B&B. good source too.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks all! Can't keep my eyes away from the Almost Eden site for the moment.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

F4F - tellin' you I love Almost Eden!! Great vendor!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hello all. Hope you are enjoying the weekend. Raining here, so thought I'd play a little.

Messy pic but great scent. Bamboo Palm, Chamaedorea seifrizii.

This is kind of cheating- a cut flower arrangement. Cut flowers are a luxury, but I enjoy having them now and then. This arrangement has many fragrants- carnation, phlox, roses, asian lily and a narcissus I stuck in there, too.

Thumbnail by fauna4flora
Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

More cheating- I bought these rather than grew them, but these are worth attempting to chill the bulbs if need be. Some sort of narcissus I think.

And here is what I think will be the creme de la creme of my fragrant orchids, although I won't find out until dark. I now have 5 fragrant orchids, and decided that I am well past the line that defines when I have begun to "collect" fragrant orchids. Look out DH!

This is Brassavola nodosa x cordata 'Little Stars'
My orchid book states that this is a freesia/lily of the valley scent category.

That is a lovely plant, fauna. Speaking of freesias, the scent of freesias are wafting throughout the backyard now. I have several patches throughout the backyard, but this is my main patch. I added the straw hat in honor of SPRING! My favorite time of the year.

And they make great arrangements too -

Great pics, soils and up. I'm excited because even though I have some freesia seedlings working I sprung for 2 packs of bulbs at Lowes and potted them up today. I was wondering if all the colors would be fragrant, but decided, heck- they are pretty anyway!

I love those tiles behind the vase (and the brick wall)....... did you paint them yourselves?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

F4F - that photo of what you think are narcissus - GREAT shot...beautiful lighting!!
soils...love that arrangement with the hat...nice artistic touch

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Chantell. I also meant to say that soil's hat is wayyyyyy cute.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

f4f, that narcissus is glorious. I'd love to have a double but I haven't found one for southern climes. Is this the first year for those or are they repeats?

The orange and purple in your arrangement is so good-looking.

Well, here's a first: Hubby could actually smell something. He told me he really enjoy the various citrus blossoms we presently have. I had just about given up on that man's nose. This is the bloom on my var. Eureka lemon. White w/ pink underside.

and here are the blooms on my Everhardt navel orange. All white flowers. I was smelling this one as I was eating my fruity cheerios this morning. Life is good.

Var. pink jasmine in full splendor. Flowers are white with pink underside. Deliciously fragrant.

'tis true, 'tis true: narcissus Thalia is fragrant. However, I had to break the flower to smell it; didn't feel like pointing my butt to the air in order to get a whiff of it. I then put the bloom in my sarcococca so I could take a pic. Chantell, can you see buds? looks like the sarcococca should be blooming soon

Thanks, Chantell and F4F. The hat was one of my oldest daughther's girl scout project years ago. As for the tiles, I wish I could say I have the artistic talent to paint them LoL. But, the two smaller ones are from Puerto Vallarta, the bluish one is a gft from a visitor from Holland, and of course, the Mom one is from my kids. The tile that the vase is on is leftover from the swimming pool tile.

Chantell - I am going to have to get myself a Hoya now.

Vossner - how nice that your citrus is already in bloom. My meyers lemon still have a ton of fruit on it - maybe that is inhibiting the blossom formation? I fell for the catalog description that Thalia is fragrant and bought some, but I did not care for the smell at all. You must have a better smelling variety. It does reproduce well and flowers reliably year after year. For that reason, I am letting it grow, but not using it for indoor arrangements

ahem! i said fragrant, not delicious fragrant, lol

!! NERY !! So glad I saw your post I ran out quickly (sun's going down rapidly) when what next to the wonderful red spray paint that Miss Utility blessed my plant with 2 years ago (despite my saying PLEASE USE FLAGS NOT SPRAY PAINT) did I see?????? !!! BUDS !!! Now if I can simply remember to go sniff!!!

And yes ANOTHER of Orange Jasmine 'Lakeview' - this sweetheart has bloomed for me EVERY season since getting her last summer...what an amazing little girl with a beautiful scent

Oopss, my bad

Voss- I BOUGHT that narcissus! I guess it's the first year.....dunno. I will have to figure out how to overwinter it since I must have it again. The blooms are shorter lived than I remember.

Love all the pics. My grapefruit smell the sweetest.

Chantell, what is Ponderosa (SUCH a nice pic, BTW) and is that a bud emerging off the leaf in the previous picture?!?!?!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Soils - yes, to hoya esp if you can land a lacunosa

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

F4F only you would catch that in that horrible photo...I just looked at it. I certainly hope I didn't flick off buds when I was messin' with it prior to taken the pic...ugh!! I'll check tomorrow. Too funny though b/c it DOES appear to be growing from the leaf doesn't it? LOL The Ponderosa (hope I'm spelling that right) is a lemon I got from.....*drum roll** Almost Eden 2 weeks ago. Sooo have you placed an order yet?
While we're all chatting - why, praytell is it so hard to get a Jasmine Grand Duke Supreme....eh?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I have to wonder about all these varieties of J. sambac. I honestly am still waiting for my first of the J. sambac(s) to bloom. I am quite sure I am feeding them too much nitrogen and have had far too much vegetative growth. From my standpoint in the industry often these variety names are made up and the only reason one name differs slightly is because someone else who was also able to sell it called it something else. Of course, there are exceptions to this, but if there is little to no documentation to sort this out, then it's hard for me to get excited about varieties.

Which reminds me, Chantell didn't you have buds on your T. holstii? With fragrants, there is never a bubble to burst, eh?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL....Oh I hear you...believe me!!! Yes...bud on Tab still viable - fingers crossed...reminds me...I should take another pic tomorrow. Bud is still small - very slow growth on this so - I'll continue to wait (cough, cough) "patiently."

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

LOL My T. Holstii is about to bloom also...your right Chantell it's taking it's "sweet" time....hopefully it's going to be worth it. I have 4 buds in various stages so I can't wait.

My Maid of Orleans Jasmine is waking up....I hope I get more flowers this year, I finally put it in the ground. I want to make Jasmine Tea.

They smell devine.

Vietnamese Gardenia is still blooming it's heart out, this gardenia blooms for such a long time, there's always flowers on it. I love the smell but hate sticking my nose into the flower as this flower attracks thrips, they don't do any harm to the plan but I don't want to sniff them up. I'm attempting to Air Layer it this year, fingers are crossed.

Thumbnail by astcgirl
Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Samantha - don't you adore MOO's fragrance?!?!? I just love it - probably one of my favorites for scent!! Lucky you with multiple buds on your Tab - I have but the one....and DANG proud of THAT!! LOL As for that Vietnamese Gardenia believe me - my fingers - toes and eyes are crossed for successful air layering...LOL

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I got seeds from my vietnamese gardenia last year, but have since learned that the vietnamensis may be a (drum roll.........) variety. Teh mother plant is full of buds, so will be interesting to see when the seedlings bloom. The babies are quite nice size, but no buds yet. So, air layering may be the way to go with this one.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, remember when you did the mini coop for the ___ gardenia? All mine germinated but died after transplanting. I think I did that too soon.

My MOO is waking up too.

f4f, I recommend daff. Erlicheer (early cheer), a double. good for the south and I love pairing it w/ the traditional looking daffs, for interest. I think there is an all yellow Erlicheer but I haven't tried that one. Thanks to Steve_FtWorth, I have gone daff crazy and hope to plant some each year from now on.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Oh boy, Voss- another plant to collect. Thanks for the info!

I still have 3 Tahitian gardenia seedlings and they are doing well. Don't remember having trouble transplanting- sorry about yours, Voss. :-(

Hmmm, I'll have to check and see if I have a MOO. Don't remember -got to many plants, LOL!
