Glad your Rader finally gave a scent. I ordered some seeds of 2 other species to play around with. (Thanks to you!!!!)
Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful
? What kind of plant is 'Orange Sunshine'?
Jill - she's a Brug that F4F sang her scent praises!!!!
You "ordered some seeds of 2 other species to play around with" ?!?!? Whaa whooo...gotta tell us about these....
It is a Brugmansia.
Cross posted! It's also a nice one since it blooms when small. I've even seen it in a hanging basket on the Brug forum!
TGIF!
Ohhh AMEN for that....amen
hmm, a *small* brug... ;-)
Thought I was gettin' another fruit tree didn't cha? ROTFLOL
yes, I did! and of course I immediately wondered if I "needed" one, too!
Not to beat the Brug drum too much on this forum...... but, this was the one brug on my first click to that forum that sold me, and here I am less than a year out with some of my own. This is Dr. Seuss (my apologies for the bad picture.) Smells very nice. Scent-wise don't love it more than 'Orange Sunshine', but love it for it's own. Very sweet scent....very pure. I can't compare it to a rose but it's kind of like a rose.....if that makes any sense!
Speaking of fruit trees.....many "fruits" themselves have a wonderful aroma. My favorite being guava.
F4F - can't beat any drum too much on this forum if it's got a great scent IMHO - Seuss' son CG's scent is something as well....my favorite scent those far, And thanks to you...Orange Sunshine has been ordered...mercy! LOL
What can be "sweeter" than Chantell's picture? I love it!
Viola (hello), no, I am not sure. I would have to look up whether I bought that one or traded for it, and I am certainly happy to have a real flower this very day! Your picture is wonderful, in fact fabulous, and I do hope we talk soon so that you may give me many brug lessons!
ahh thank you...just found out...my best DG buddy and I are taking a road trip down Punta Gorda - or in that general direction...Naples - Marco Island....ya'll need to tell me all the good nurseries to hit!!!
We had our once a year snow too! Must be fun watching the grandbabes in it.
When are you taking your road trip, are you going to be going thru Atlanta Chantell?? If so I'm only 13 miles off of I-75.
Hey Vi - we're still in the planning stages...some time early summer is the current thought...how cool is this!?!?
Full of possibilities for sure, just hope it coinsides with when I'm still here :( I see a lot of saved postage, eh? Are you planning on driving a nice van to fill to the brim? My old mini only has one bench seat, the rest holds plants, lol, it's called the plant van.
That's what I said to Becky...that's I'd just bring 3 sets of clothes in a duffel bag so as to not take up space...LOL She laughed and said we'd have plenty of room!!!
Vi, the Brug with serrated leaves, is that Dr. Seuss? Is that the one everyone rages about the scent, or was it Charles Grimaldi? (I always mix up these 2)
Dr Seuss & CG are very similar indeed, I have had both for about 5 years and even the experts have a hard time telling them apart. The unique fragrance's are similar and the only difference I've seen is that my CG has never gone to pastels, all the leaves are not as serrated and the bloom seems to be a bit frillier. Also the Dr seems more pest prone for some reason. Both have been yellow, gold and orange. Here's a lovely photo of my Charles Grimaldi.
What a funky, unique flower! What does it smell like again?
It has a very pure, sweet, honey-suckle like scent. I did have to practically snuffle the blossom up my nose to smell it... hopefully it will be stronger in the future!
They're little blooms, maybe 1/4 inch across.
Wow...so pretty, even if it had no fragrance I would love to have one! Too bad they don't do well here...
Vi, I didn't know some Brugs were more pest prone than others. That's good to know!
For some reason, the yellows had always seemed to be the most pest prone--which is why I don't have many, lol. Whiskers, KBS, Jamaican Yellow, Jesse Noel, etc...all reasons that they are hard to find now and why many no longer grow brugs. The Dr was one of the first brugs in the US and the hybridizers got going to get more pest resistance--Charles Grimaldi was one such--a cross of Dr & Frosty Pink. Take a look at the parentage http://www.abads.org/abads/Registry/namelist/ and all the brug names that are no longer heard of--it's pretty interesting. I believe Alice Harris http://www.karcheskycanna.com/ now has some great yellows, just wish I could afford them.
That last link to KCC Greenhouses- are they in the U.S.?
Yep, Alice is in PA. and a member here http://davesgarden.com/members/Abutilon/. A very wonderful lady, she also shows her ebay store on her site.
Very sweet lady...sent me some Dat seeds I was looking for and included some gift NOID brug seeds. My first time w/seeds for either...so we'll see.
Why is Kachersky so expensive anyway? Even the cannas that are sold eslewhere are so pricey! Has anyone here ever purchased from them before?
Alice is extremely well known in the brug world at least, I hate cannas myself, but am sure she is there also, I'm sure she's in the Garden Watchdog. Don't forget that she is doing her own breeding program and imports brugs from Europe too--it does get expensive to feed all the trials for 2 years (most just to discard), grow out stock, heat greenhouses, buy chemicals and the like, especially in PA! Someone with a new plant really has only one big chance to make money on it as once it's released folks share. Please don't be hard on the hybridizers--it's really not a profitable business, most do it for the love of the plants. I personally know of at least 4 brug hybridizers that had to quit because they just couldn't afford it.
Boy, are we off topic or what? Sorry!
Vi, I'm totally with you on the rare Brugs, and and the research involved, etc. But do the cannas (even the ones readily available at other online stores) have to be so expensive, you know what I mean?
AND HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU HATE CANNAS MY FRIEND? YOU'RE FIRED! LOL!!!
(Chantell dear, sorry for the off-topic, but I LOVE cannas, lol!_)
No worries about OT...I'm the queen of OT...seriously!!! Wish you lived closer Roberta...I'll be digging up 2-3 types of Canna that'll need a home in a month's time...shipping would be a bear though, I think - they were good sized last year and I'm sure they've put on growth.
Cannas=NO scent, small blooms for such big awkward plants, multiply too fast and are a bear to dig up, leaves always look cruddy, big-time magnet for Japanese Beetles here... JMHO...much better plants out there. Tore out all mine years ago and trashed them. And, hey you can't fire me, I've already been fired :(
Back to the subject, my jonquils are certainly smelling sweet, combined with Daphne & Winter Honeysuckle (still blooming) makes for a very fragrant bedside bouquet :)
Jonquils- is that a variety or something related/similar to daffodils? Very nice! Love narcissus, but I am too lazy for chilling bulbs!
Back to the subject of rare brugs, how expensive is expensive, does anyone know? I went to the website, but the availability is currently by request......just curious!
On Jonquils, from Wiki: Division 7: Jonquilla Daffodils. Characteristics of Narcissus jonquilla and its allies clearly evident; flowers are small to medium sized, perianth segments are flat, corona length varies but is usually short and semi-spherical, foliage may be rush-like and dark green as in the species but phenotypic distillation through crossbreeding between divisions has produced a range of foliage types. Fragrance is usually prominent. Flowers may be borne one to several to a stem, depending upon cultivar.
Roberta, I sure do envy your Sweet Peas! Guess I know now why I didn't plant any, I wouldn't be around to see them. Please take some more photos so I can pretend to smell them! Which variety did you get?
Vi, I read the Old Spice mix was the most fragrant, so that's what I got! I now have purple and pink blooms in the same pot. Will take some pics for you!
Soilsandup, which sunset zone are you? You gave me hopes I can also grow a witch hazel?
Roberta,
I think I am zone 14 in the sunset terminology.
