Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Chantell, I have a henna, too! Didn't know it smelled THAT good. Most of these growers mark "fragrant" and nothing more........ Got it as a rooted cutting in September and need to put it out in the "neglect area" cause I heard it likes that and that it also likes a lot of room to grow.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Good to know...I shall avoid coddling it...not that I do that any way but....well..as I said good to know.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Bad, Bad, Bad Chantell.....stop showing me new plants! LOL. Ok I just ordered it aswell as the Evergreen Wisteria I've been wanting and 4 figs.....have to make the shipment worthwhile don't I! Now now more Chantell.....the USF Sale is next weekend. Luckily my neighbor who's kindly taking me has her leg in a cast so it will be a quick pop in to pick up some plants from Gardino's and then home...no long drooling walks for me this time. I'll have to wait for the July one.

Lucky me...my backyard is full so my neighbor and I asked our other neighbor to build a gate inbetween the two of us so that I could spread out into her yard LOL.....It's so good to have great neighbors.

F4F....I can't wait for my brugs to bloom.....the coop ones are really growing.....I'm so anxious to see just one bloom and smell what you've all raved about. Knowing my luck it's going to be overkill and they'll probably all bloom at the same time.

what figs did you get

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Vossner, I ended up getting
Conadria Fig
Improved Celeste Fig
LSU Gold Fig
LSU-Purple Fig
Mary Lane Seedless Fig

I have been looking everywhere for Violette du Bordeaux (Negronne) but all the online places seem to sell them for too much. So for now I'll try my hand at the above, they sound like good ones for the south down here. Fruits are my other passion/addiction. I have blueberries, blackberries, mulberies, Jamaican Cherry (my favorite!), plus the lemon, lime's, mango, and lots more....all in containers...it's fun walking out and being able to pick your own.

Went out into the garden today and my Grand Duke of Tuscany is blooming.....looooove that fragrance, especially on warm, humid nights it wafts into the lanai. Lots of buds about to open up on it.

i don't have nearly as many fruits but agree w/ you, very satisfying to pick your own. I have Celeste and think it's wonderful, wondering how much better could an Improved Celeste be?

I'm dmailing you about mango, to avoid hijacking thread

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hello all. Was a good day. Violabird came over to visit- yayyy! So much opened up today or yesterday just for her to sniff. T. holstii, climbing ylang ylang, Grand Duke, Vietnamese gardenia, B. Jamaicensis, B. lactea, Lakeview jasmine, ruby red grapefruit, heliotrope, bamboo palm, and some things I'm sure I'm forgetting. Hope all of your buds are open and wowing you!

Here is a plant that jumped into my truck yesterday. It's been listed as fragrant but I didn't believe it- Bauhinia x blakeana, 'Hong Kong Orchid Tree.' This is a special cross - I don't believe they all have a fragrance......

Love the contrast of that white (?) veining!!! Sooo pretty...I've often wondered about those orchid trees. I know I've been disappointed with a couple of orchids scent wise...my buddy and I have decided we've become scent snobs...LOL. Ohhh F4F I can only imagine how beautiful things must smell for you now...that 'Lakeview' is easily one of my favorite scents.
Samantha - now don't blame me...you've "helped" get me started on the Tea Olives least you forget...LOL!!! Don't you love how we all "save" by ordering more - since we're paying shipping any way????

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hello all. I have an interview already this morning! But, alas- I think I might have to decline the opportunity BECAUSE I don't think I'll have any self control if I am next door to Gardino's every day!

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Ahhhh......go for it....and while your there, pop into Gardino's too......that would be a dream job.

Wishing you all the luck today F4F

OMG...heaven or what?!?!? Go - go - go!!! Keeping you in prayer...God's will...make sure you keep us all informed now ok?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Awwe, thank you guys. I accepted the job- we'll see. I know it's fun to think about Gardino's and all, but this is for now less money and more gas money to drive to. BUT, this is a transitional position to move to commission. Never had a commission job before, but not scared of it this time. And I totally get it- take the salary job, prove myself, start establishing the client base......etc, etc. I see a lot of opportunity ahead - it felt like I needed them and they need me. :-) Can't wait until I can begin plant shopping again. You guys are the best! Good vinbes for Violabird and Robcorreia.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Amen...I 2nd that!!!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Congratulations on your new job f4f. Wonderful news.

Tree peonies are blooming for me now. This one does not have a strong scent, but a scent is definitely there.

Wonderful news Jazz! Sorry so late for thanking you again for the wonderful tour Sunday, I sure enjoyed meeting your family and sniffing to my heart's content!! Still can't believe I smelled Ylang-Ylang and my fav scent that Taiwan Jasmine (right?) YUM!

Pics will have come when able--2 folks here had accidents and we are busy.
Vi

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Congratulations, F4F! I hope your new position will lead to everything you're hoping, plus some more good stuff you haven't even thought about yet! :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Taiwan Jasmine??? Hmmmm...talk to me about this wondrous scent....

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks to all!

Hmmm, I had forgotten about the smell of peonies until you reminded me soilsandup- that one will have to remain a memory for me, but it's a good one!

Vi- I hope everyone in your family is OK. Sorry to hear about accidents....

Chantell- vi means Vietnamese Gardenia. That one struck a big "rootbeer" impression with her.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Gotta love that Vietnamese Gardenia.....one of my favorite bushes this year....it's getting huge in it's pot.

So happy for you F4F, my fingers are crossed for those still looking for work.

I got a few seed today in the mail, trying to save from buying plants.....Aussie ones....Hymenosporum Flavum (Native Frangipani) and also Boronia Megastigma and Boronia Denticulata, both are supposed to be very fragrant. Weird thing is that the Boronia needs to be germinated with smoke to mimic the bush fires we always have in Australia, so I bought some liquid smoke....this is going to be interesting! LOL.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

That IS interesting. Maybe you can start a thread just on germinating those? Would be very fun to track.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Speaking of which....checked my clove seeds...D-E-A-D...very, very sad...
Samantha - I'd love to hear about those...I ordered an Aussi plant last year...can't remember the name...if I find it I'll post though...sadly it died

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

*sniffle*

a moment of silence for the poor deceased cloves-that-were-not-to-be

Check the propagation forum... I know somebody has done seeds that need smoke and posted about it.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Poor cloves!

Here is my Brunfelsia lactea. Boy is this one incredible. Not spicy, but heady- I think it's in the freesia class of scents as it has some tones in common with the nodosa orchid cross.

Thumbnail by fauna4flora
Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh mercy....my sniffers straining south trying to get a whiff of that...soooo pretty!! Is there a trick to the Brunfelsias? I have 2...one over wintered fine the other (the one I'd preferred to have lived) I don't believe is still "with" us.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

It depends. Brunfelsia americana, pauciflora and grandiflora will tolerate some drought stress. So I would say don't keep those constantly wet when overwintering. Brunfelsia jamiacensis pouts, yellow and drops leaves whenever it gets too dry, so I would "baby" that one a little more (but it's not the best smelling anyway.) Not sure about lactea- only had it since January.

I would also say high light. So, maybe small sizes that fit in windowsills may be the way to go for you- do you have a lighted area or greenhouse? I kinda thought you had a greenhouse, but not sure........I think you could keep a plant that is small from the get go in a one gallon for a long time and either keep cutting it back or taking air layers every fall.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Oh, Roberta, where is that fantasic Sanguinea? Maybe time to start a new chapter of this thread with a pic of your gorgeous baby?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi 4F4, congratulations on the job! : ))
Here is my B. sanguinea..I am ecstatic!!!

Roberta!!! Gorgeous deep color on that!! Good for you! Yeah you know what's coming...whats the scent like?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

hahaha you guys are all online too? OK, I pull on a sweater and went outside to check on fragrance.,,,,ZERO!!! LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

But of course!!! HAPPY EASTER ALL

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes....Happy Easter Everyone.....Look what bloomed for me this morning....two huge beautiful "heaven scent" Gardenia's....very nice scent to them. I can vouch for the name.

It's very simlilar to the Tahitian Gardenia.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Look what I also found this morning.....my first Brug bud....yipeee....Miss Emily MacKenzie, hopefully she has a nice scent. I don't see any notes in the Plant Files on her scent.

Good luck! I've got about 10 I am waiting on - Triple Peach may finally redeem herself!

Guess I have been a fool for years not realizing what a great fragrance Easter Lilies have - I'll be planting her in the ground when she is done blooming - for now she is providing me with my "daily fix"...

Thumbnail by Bec_No_Va
Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

They are wonderful. And even in zone 9 they "may"rebloom. In your zone- heck yeah! Go for it! Big Easter sniff/smile to you all!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

amen!! Great pic there buddy!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lovely! Just be sure to keep them away from the four-feets. Lilies are deadly toxic -- pretty much in the way that people think poinsettias are (they're really not so bad according to PalmBob, as a critter would have to eat up a whole plant or two to get really sick... but he says with lilies it only takes a nibble).

Eliot samples all the greenery in the house... Even with his own pot of wheat grass, he can't resist the spider plants.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

I guess I was lucky in that my one and only cat (she lived until almost 21) did not munch on very many of my plants!

Whereas the red tree peony that I posted earlier was only slightly fragrant, this pink tree peony is very fragrant - as much as the herbaceous ones.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the heads-up, JB has one or two he likes to munch on (Ponytail palm is one, shredded it!) - but Thor couldn't care less...
