Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

For those that I've traded with - if you don't have a MOO...I will be hitting the Williamsburg Pottery...in previous years I've been able to buy WELL rooted MOOs in 4" pots for around $6.??. If anyone (that I've previously traded with) would like me to pick up a ship - let me know.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Well here is a new one for me:
http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/CHONEMORPHA_FRAGRANS.htm
Anyone have this? There was mention of it on a FL forum today. Hmmmm.....I hope Gardino's has it!

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

I have one of those Frangipani Vines, not sure which one though F4F I think there are a few different kinds, I bought it (can't remember where, I'll have to check) but it's still small....long vines but it lost all it's leaves during winter. I have it currently still in a pot until I figure out where to put it (very common for me to do this...LOL)

Hopefully it will bloom this year during the summer if I get my self organized. It has long vines but no leaves at the moment.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh no F4F...there goes ONE MORE to my wishlist, lol!!! This vine even LOOKS fragrant!

I love both yours and soilsandup flower arrangements. I luuuve arranging flowers from the garden in pretty vases....sometimes I don't have the heart to cut the flowers though, hehe...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Great...yup that was one I'd "seen" online last year...probably on Tops...thanks for that reminder...LOL
Love these daffy's...nice scent as a bonus

OMG! What a beautiful picture. Love it. Just love it.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

how beautiful Chantell...your daffs look like roses!!!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Here I am cheating again since this isn't MY plant. This is Nun's orchid. It's very pleasant, but not must-have for me, otherwise it would have come home with me! It's nice in a mass planting and the scent has more impact that way, too.

Hmmm...what time of the day did you detect a scent of the Nun's orchid F4F, I have a clump of them at my front door and even though I've heard they are fragrant (lightly) I don't detect anything.....they are beautiful though, so they are keepers in my garden.

It was about 10 am or so. They ARE beautiful, and the price was great. Truth is I got laid off yesterday, so I was out "networking." If I was still employed I would have snapped up a couple those along with the variegated crinum, variegated brugmansia and several other really cool plants. I wouldn't rank them scent-wise as must haves, but if employed they would be all around keepers. Certain things just really smell nice for me, and I think it might be the humidity here. Alocasia sinuata is another one that really carries.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh F4F...I'm sorry to hear that...a few of our group here are in like positions...very scary out there now...

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

f4f, I hope that soon there is a bright/happy side to this event, like a new and better job? Win a gazillion $$$ in FL lotto and you don't ever have to work again, just get every single plant you want? get your own lab?

I have heard of a jasminum villa_____ something. I thought f4f had posted about it but no. Can anybody here tell me if they have this jasmine? sorry, I don't have the full name but it does begin with a V.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Nery - sorry...it doesn't ring a bell...tried to google just to see what would come up but it's no more help then I. Where had you heard about it?

Ok...so shoot me...I finally caved and despite my consistent ability to murder potted gardenias (not be be confused with the babies that thrive in my front yard) I purchased a Gardenia Tree...have no earthly idea the cultivar...yet. But they had that special (Nery you signed up) that if you sign up for their "gardening club" (it's free) they have a buy one house plant get the other (same price or less) for free. I signed up in the store and took my "sign up card" with me to the cashier...and whhha laaa. TWO 3' Gardenia Trees full of buds for $33. Becky will get one and the other stays in my house awaiting her death sentence. I'm really gonna try this time to keep this one alive. Put her in my bathroom until outside temps warm up a bit - so she'll have plenty of humidity - and light from window (although facing North - north-east). Ya'll cross your fingers for me...as you can imagine - my bathroom smells like a slice of heaven!!! Not to mention the lighting in the morning is perfect...for photos at least. ^_^

As some of you know, I've been starting a modest collection of orchids...only the very fragrant ones. I've noticed an upsetting trend though...what some feel is heavily fragrant is not necessarily what others do. I've been disappointed thus far in all of the ones sold to me as very/heavily/really fragrant with the exception of the white one I posted of pic of last month...and the baby that arrived last night...OMG...what an amazing PLUS wafting scent...may I introduce Zygopetalum mackayi? Could catch this scent as I opened the box....ahhhhhh

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

F4F, sorry to hear of your news, my fingers are crossed that you find something soon. I tried smelling my nun's orchid at various times today but nothing...it's pretty humid here at the moment, the Banana Shrub close by is emitting a wonderful scent....maybe that's why I can't smell this one.hmmmm.

Wishing you magic green gardenia fingers Chantell....I'm still hopeless at indoor gardenia's....I'm doing ok with the outdoor potted ones but they are the tropical ones...Vietnamese, Heaven Scent, Tahitian etc.....I really have to try hard to not buy those beautiful ones at lowes full of blooms, every time I fall for it, they are dead within a month. My Gardenia tree in my front walkway is about to burst into bloom, it has lots of fat juicy buds on it....can't wait for that.

That Zygopetalum mackayi orchid looks so cute, heavy fragrance is such a plus....it's now on my list. Saw one on ebay but it had just finished blooming....I want one in bud, I dont' want to wait another year for a bloom....I'll keep a look out for one at the USF sale, please spill where you got yours from.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ugh Samantha....actually that's the ebay seller I bought mine from...except I bought it outside of ebay and paid $12 (my friend and I split an order from him getting a total of 6 orchids)...ugh!!! That orchid better hit $12 or I'm going to be annoyed - unless of course YOU or another of my DG pals get it cheaper.
Thank you for the good gardenia growing thoughts...I feel like the children's story about the Little Engine..."I think I can, I think I can". Heading to Pottery tomorrow...sure I'll have another Maid of Orleans in tow when i get home.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hi all. Thanks so much for your good thoughts. Voss, yes I played the loterry this week (LOL- I NEVER do that) and a lot of veterans in the industry who know me have said similar things - time to find something even better. But, the lab is DH's and it's still a part of this household (hallaleuhah.) Would love to work there but not his choice. Some couples can work and live together and some can't - not saying we couldn't but he isn't open to the idea. When I was at a nursery yesterday, they said yes send in the resume, but it's Dad, mom, son and son's girlfriend. Hmmm.........

Chantell, good luck with that gardenia! What a delight to have in your house, no matter what. I LOVE your orchid. How would you describe the scent?

Thanks so much, astcgirl for your thoughts. I'm used to just finding a job when I need one, but may not be that easy these days.

So, enough about me and on with the fragrant flowers! My Tabernaemontana bud opened 2 days ago- anyone else? I'm still enjoying the Brassavola orchid and am pleased that orchid spikes last for a long time. I sowed seeds for the chocolate daisy yesterday and have a few passis to start this weekend.......leftovers from previous weeks seed splurges. I better squeeze money into the budget for lots of potting soil this spring!

Have fun. ~F4F

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Waaaah, no sign up cards in my store, couldn't find a coupon online or in my email (I signed up a few days ago), and to top it all off the pickings at my local HD were very slim!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OK...
#1 I snatched a handful of the HD cards...if you want one - dmail me w/your addy AFTER checking to make sure your store is still offering the 2 for 1...please and thank you.

#2 GUESS what I scored?!?! !!! Rangoon Creeper !!! Yipeeee...wanted one of these for a bit now...how excited am I!?!? Course I'm also thinking....what the heck...another vine...what goes through my mind other then "fragrant...must have"??? LOL Then I saw his listing for HEPTACODIUM MICONIOIDES (SEVEN SON FLOWER)...and that sounded positively yummy...so got that one as well. He's easily one of my favorite sellers on ebay: dogwooderitternet http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZdogwooderitternetQQhtZ-1 Fantastic selection - healthy plants with good root systems - VERY fair shipping - how fair you may ask? This is the 3rd year I've placed at least 1 order with him and consistently he's paid MORE for shipping then he's charged me.

Any one care to comment on what causes the yellowing of Gardenia leaves? I'm really wanting to keep this Gardenia Tree alive...it's a pride thing.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I've been told the yellowing is chlorosis from lack of iron. I had applied chelated iron and that helps a little. I decided gardenias were too fuzzy for me and was prepared to let it die of neglect. Once I made that decision, the plant has survived on its own. Gets yellow, then gets all green and blooms profusely, gets yellow, you get the pic.

C, I would let it be, being careful not to overwater. maybe it's just a case of spring sickness and plant will get over it.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I've seen a similar pattern to what Vossner is describing, although we have 2 varieties and only the newer, improved flower variety behaves that way and only since we put it in the ground- when it was in a pot it didn't yellow. Drought stress will cause excessive yellowing and also low light. Another factor in my case is nematodes, which gardenias are prone to, and which I was also sternly warned about.... ;-P

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok...my plant gurus to my rescue - thank you both!!! My thought was to put it in my bathroom b/c of the humidity..but north facing 1/2 window probably doesn't cut it so...it will be moved to DD's room with large south facing window tonight. Noticed today that the new growth at end was getting that "limp" look as well. I WILL succeed at this!! Will try the change of locale and then chelated iron if still lookin' ill. I'd already gave it a bit of Holly Tone and watered with my stinky fish emulsion (my personal cure all's...LOL). Almost ready to give it some more water when the voice in my head yelled STOP...shoved my finger in the soil and said...NOPE she's not thirsty. Whew...close call.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Your gardenias "sister" is sitting in front of the doors leading to the deck and I gave it some water, but nothing else - doing great and the buds are a popping open ^_^

Introducing 'Dr. Seuss' brugmansia. Here lies fauna4flora...........

Thumbnail by fauna4flora
Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Dear fellow fragrant buddies. I am writing you from heaven, for surely that is where I must be. Never did I imagine I would smell such a lovely scent, so I must be on my way to an eternal journey for I want to smell this over and over forever. Ethereal, light, not heady. Sweet, sweet, sweet with a hint of lemon chiffon mixed with vanilla.

Thumbnail by fauna4flora
Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh F4F ... so jealous!! Cant' wait for my Bruggie blooms in a few months! Is the 2nd pic the Dr as well??

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

F4F...I also lost my job this week...hang in there and we will ALL be fine!!!

Gosh I really want to smell your Dr Seuss, from what you describe it must really be heaven! : ))

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Roberta - I can send you a cutting of mine

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

ARRRRGGH! Rob, not you too! Got to keep that positive attitude- I agree it will be fine eventually.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well here's 3 of how many of us without jobs now? I sure do miss ya'll. Keep posting photos for me, the only fragrant plant I've come across is a sheared down Jasmine hedge :(

F4F, That Dr Seuss must be spicy enough to knock your socks off, hope there's more buds. The second one is different, yes? It looks pink and more like a Suaveolens or cross, they usually have that sweet delicate scent like candy.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hi Vi. Yes there are more buds on the Dr. Suess. In fact, this will be a good weekend for you to visit if you can make it. The 2 pictures are the same plant- I like taking pictures at night when the skirt is totally open and the lighting makes the flowers look extra showy. I'll have to get my notebook ready when you come- the scent is more sweet and delicate rather than spicy, so I may be doing some re-naming based on your notes!!! Looking forward to the brug 101.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

BTW, has anyone seen the fragrant carnation coop? Taboo for me, but I just "happened" to smell one at a restaurant today that was nothing like I ever smelled before. Spicy like a Brunfelsia or something tropical. I didn't know they smelled that good! Hmmmmm......

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Look what opened today....it actually had a scent in bud form, so I waited anxiously for it to open.....how's yours coming along Chantell...should be soon now.

Thumbnail by astcgirl
Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

My gardenia's are popping open also....heavenly smells all around the yard right now after the rains.

Thumbnail by astcgirl
Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes...saw and posted about that carnation co-op...how could I resist??? Esp since they're hardy here...whaaa whoooo!!!
Oh Samantha...LOOK at your babies...I think mine's got a little bit..definitely bigger...what's the scent like????

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

OK Chantell....I can't resist any longer! : )

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Roberta - I'd see about direct shipping for you since you're in CA - seems like that would be cheaper shipping-wise- then paying from vendor to hostess back to you

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

huh? Can you translate please? Lol!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL...I just meant that vendor that providing the plants - they are located IN CA and I just wondered if it might save you some $$ to buy directly from them. Boy I can make things much more confusing then it needs to be - can't I?
Ok...so guess what's coming my way Monday from one of my FAV vendors (Almost Eden)? Hena (Lawsonia inermis) - supposedly has a scent similar to Sweet olive!!! Yum-yum!!! Samanatha?!? Did you hear that???? ^_^
