Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh no....just what I was affraid of! I'm zone 24...much hotter climate!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Ok, I sniffed and sniffed this one. Finally......one even F4F can't detect the fragrance, or is that because I forgot that it ISN'T fragrant??!!?!!?!?Silly me, I am too busy collecting that I didn't even realize it wasnt' fragrant- probably also because I got it from Gardino's so I assumed!

Sorry about the witchhazel, Robcorreia.

Soilsandup, sniff it again... my witch hazel didn't smell like anything for the first week or so after buds opened.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Ok, I'll attempt to redeem myself after the last posting :-P
Here is that smilax that I've talked about as an unexpected source of fragrance. I actually sniffed out 2 of them, although there are many more. This first one has white flowers and smells like honey suckle watered down by grape koolaid.

And here is another- doesn't look it but flowers are all green. Believe it or not, it smells like NBJ! Not kidding. Worth tracking down to stick my nose way into it, and when there is a mass of it the scent will carry. Unfortunately, this is not a plant most gardener's would welcome.

By the by, plain old mother in law's tongue is another one that I think smells like NBJ when it blooms.

I WANNA SMELL 'OLD SPICE' SWEET PEAS....WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Do ya'll feel sorry for me?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

:-( Sowwy

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

hahahha! Ok...just to make you feel better...they're not edible! lol

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I have the seeds...if I grow them shall I send you a bloom -like sending the lilacs to Roberta?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Chantell...you'll love sweet peas!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Ha, with my luck you'll probably catch me between states :(

I had heard that they do need to grow pretty early tho, I did grow some about 15 years ago and recall the succumbed to the heat pretty quickly here.

Time to look for my 'Sweet Pea' candles and dream...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

ZZZZzzzzzzz----ahhhhhh

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

When I lived in coastal GA, we started sweet peas in early to mid Feb.

Pink Hyacinth - ahhhhhh

Vi, we have to start them in the fall over here! This is my first time growing them, we'll see how long they last...I'm sure I'll have seeds to share too!

I think ya'll down south NEED some of VIREYA "CALAVAR" --Tropical Rhododendron:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230329962415&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm38%26_nkw%3D230329962415%2509%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
No really...no need to thank me...ROTFLOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh man! Chantell, you're just mean!!! I've wanted one of those forever...and I'm totally broke now! ugh!

I bought that one Chantell....looked good for about 4 months and dried up and died....I really got into a fanatic phase of Vireya, some are supposedly very fragrant, however my test one (from that ebay seller) didn't last so I'm a little hesitant about getting more. I don't think it was the seller though, the plant looked very healthy but small when it came...I think it was just either me (probably) or the weather here.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Rob, please report as to how they held up in your weather, K?

Chantell, lucky your hyacinths, they only last here 1-3 years if you're lucky. First year fine, next year bloom almost comes out of the ground :(

Tropical Rhododendron--no thanks! I'll take my free blooming wild azeleas down in my streambed any day. Down in my little valley it's like walking a shady perfumed trail of 6-12' trees on different shades of pink, enhanced by the dogwood blooms. I am SO going to miss it this year :(

Just tryin' to help Roberta...LOL
Samantha - honestly I think some of the ebay sellers - sell plants too small...JMHO...but still. If I want a plug THAT'S what I'll buy and pay a small price for. If I want a plant then - and that's what I'm expecting (and paid for) well then that's what I should get. Sometimes they're so small and then with the stress of shipping...well it's not always the buyers fault, I guess is what I'm saying...done ranting...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Vi do you know I've lived in this part of VA for about 10 years...always wondering what these fragrant blooms (bushes) were over by our Walmart, of all places. Finally took and posted a million pics and THAT'S what they ended up being...wild azeleas - how funny is that?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Isn't the scent heavenly? They do not transplant well however...so be warned, which is funny because they are naturalized. When I first moved here they called them wild honeysuckle trees, lol. I took samples of mine to a Hort guy and found I have quite a few different species here, wish I could find a pic of the really dark pink ones--oh well.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

The ones I'm talking about remind me of tropical colors in that (if I remember correctly) they were a cotton candy pink and the other color was a tangerine color - I kept thinking they looked like honeysuckle blooms. Aha!!! Found the thread with the thread w/pics http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/841701/

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Roberta, love that bed with the hyacinths. Chantell, love the wild azaleas. Hmmm, so when should I come visit you to see those lovely azaleas?

The vireya look tempting, but I am wary about plants that grow high on mountainsides- they tend not to like the hot summers here. I'll wait and see how my sanguina does first.

Vi- I am interested in some seeds of the purple invasive thingy (from foliage thread), but I'll have to keep it in a pot.

Anyone have any experience with Hiptage bengalensis? I got one from Zone 9 yesterday...................yippeee!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

F4F, the main thing with perilla is to deadhead it... just keeping it in a pot won't keep it under control. I had volunteers last year 100's of feet away from the previous summer's plants.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey now...ya'll are welcome any ole time!!! Rec'd my 2nd order from Almost Eden day before yesterday and LOOK what John blessed me with - arrived with buds - then yesterday...
Ponderosa Lemon...ahhhhh the scent!!!!

Thumbnail by Chantell
San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hummm! I LOVE the smell of citrus blooms! I am getting paid today and going straight to the nursery to buy an Eureka lemon tree I put on hold yesterday!

Vi, I would love to have this wild Rhododendron! They won't grow here...: ( I have some azaleas and I thought I had posted last night, but I think I forgot to upload the picture somehow!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gotta post that pic Roberta when you get your baby home. Love it, love it...get paid...buy plants...gotta have our priorities...

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

F4f I have a large Hiptage bengalensis that I picked up at the USF sale from Gardino's last year, hoping that it will flower this year, it's really big, I got it in a 3 gallon.

I just bought the Strongylodon (Jade Vine) from Zone 9 and received it yesterday. I can't wait for those blooms....they are not fragrant but boy are they beautiful and amazing. It was my first time ordering from them but I was impressed at the well established vine.

Chantell....I still haven't bought anything from Almost Eden just yet....I've been so wanting the Tropical Wisteria they have on there, it looks gorgeous but I'm not ready to pay the $20 yet....hopefully I"ll find one at the USF sale. I have heard really good things about this plant.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Samantha - if you dont' find one - please don't hesitate to order from Almost Eden...I have been EXTREMELY pleased with everything from customer service to plants. You know I'd tell you if it were different.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

That's right! Priority #1 = plants! THEN I'll think about useless stuff like food, clothes for the kid and mortgage...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell & others who like to push zone limits for tropical plants... be sure to check out today's article from LariAnn... http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2332/

intriguing!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Just waiting for THAT product to come out.
So...as I crashed on the love seat the other night....rested my head back....closed my eyes....took a deep breath...
!!!???WHAT ???!!! Oh my....what is that delightful scent...I look to my right and think huh, when did that produce a bud, let alone a bloom?????

AND...one of my all time favorite scents...the Hoya Lacunosa - for those that don't have this...it's a must

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Well looks like all the nice scents have moved to your place.....how lucky are you with that Brug, I'm waiting patiently for this year to come and all my cuttings to bloom....still haven't had the pleasure to smell one.

My Brunfelsia Australis is in bloom and I have it stitting at the entrance of the house so when anyone comes in they ask what the yummy smell is.

Chantell, I love your pics and narrative! : ) Is that your daughter?

I found out these tazettas are MEGA fragrant!!! I didn't know until I was sitting on the ground doing some deadheading the other day!

What does a hoya smell like? I have some noids but they've never bloomed.

Thumbnail by robcorreia
Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Roberta - what is a tazetta? They look like Daffy's to me or is that one in the same? Having a "duh" moment, I think. Hoya's fragrance varies from hoya to hoya. Out of my four - only that one and H. bella have bloomed. The bella has gorgeous blooms (see below - one out of her cluster) but little to no scent. The lacunosa on the other hand - has blooms that aren't much to look at (although the macro shots make them appear more interesting) but the scent....ahhhh. The way you described your Brug - is about the way I'd describe a lacunosa - AND the scent does waft some at night - I've always said it reminds me of an expensive French perfume.....sooooo pretty. I've found her to be a slow grower...she's still in a 4" pot and I've had her since she was 2 leafs old in a little dixie cup years ago. I moved her to a lighter location a few months ago and her growth has picked up so that might have been my bad....LOL.

Opps...forgot...nope that's one of my beautiful granddaughters - not biased at all, am I?
