Great Jen, it will be nice to see you again too. We always have extra plants looking for a home. This year I didn't ws much at all. Last year was the first time I tried it and it was so successful I still have 4 flats of plants that never got planted! ^_^
Thanks JB, even if the willows don't sprout, give me a call when you are in the area, you can stop by and check out what we have growing and help yourself to anything of interest.
I'll have to post back of any spring peeking plants...
Anyone else see spring peeking...
Wind, I just notices a few roots on the BPWs and so I am praying I can keep them growing after I pot them. They need more time but things are looking good as of this AM
Call me ignorant - but what type of lighting do they pretties prefer?
When I took a look see in the Gardens on Sunday, Brrrrrr, I saw that most of the buds on my new Viburnum Bodnantense "Dawn" had deepened to a dark rose color. I tried to get a good photo of it to no avail as the shrub, though very full, is still shorter than it's chicken wire cage!! I checked all of the other shrubs for buds and the Forsythia & Lilacs are coming along quite nicely. Many different ones have miniscule buds and others are quite full.
I thought for sure, someone would be showing some Camellias by now. Mine only have buds. Does anyone have Camellia blooms?
The Bridal Rice Pussey Willow, isn't showing any Catkins yet.
Lady, is the Buffalo Current, the same as the Clove Current?
Does anyone have a Winter Honeysuckle shrub? There is a large old one here that I've never seen bloom, although it must have as it had berries this summer. I've been pruning it more each year. If anyone has one, has it bloomed yet?
Storm,
Lady, is the Buffalo Current, the same as the Clove Current?
Chris
BaHumBug, Spring is NOT peeking at my house!!!!!
It's just frigid out there and even if it was, I wouldn't notice it as I'm rushing in out of the cold....... LOL
Well I do see a few daff tops sticking out, a few sedums crowning and a few buds swelling but not much beyond that. Last week I was out working in my shirt sleeves and now we are back to these low temps. I hear it may warm up for the weekend. Oh well it is still Feb after all. (sigh)
Warmer for Thur and Fri, I hear. Just noticed buds on "everblooming" shrub roses- name escapes me , but they need to be trimmed this spring. Tommie crocus finally appearing , even one tiny bloom trying to open. and many daffs have shown something--may be able to share Minnow once I see what's there.
Today, when it warms up enough to thaw out my blood with the rat poison in it, I'll go out & take pix of other plants brave enough to come up & post them here.
Don't have the Winter Honeysuckle shrub but would think it should be in bloom already.
Morning Ladies, I just returned from a walk around the farm with Barney, my JR. There is still a cold nip in the air and the sun was bright. Now it is cloudoy. I am ready to scream. I opened the window is the greenhouse because the sun gets so warm it puts the temp up to over 90 some days and now the sun went in so I have to go close the window.
I am hoping to do some planting today and tomorrow, but my schedule gets so messed up I am feeling anxiety about not getting things in the ground. Most of my plants are started inside and I need to get them growing so when repotting time comes I am ready.
Storm, when your bridel rice pussy willow blooms could you put up a picture please. I am a fan of PWs and I only have the black and one I bought and it does not have a name. I hate when I do that. I also hate when someone gives me something and does not tell me what it is called. I never say I do not want it, but it is a problem. Does anyone else have that happen?
I must run. Have a good day and please send Spring to NJ if yo can.
Holly, lovely photo. I love the red on the tips of the leaves. Judy
Them "peeper" wouldn't be able to peek above the snow here...LOL How cute are they, though?
BUMMER! I had not clicked to watch this Thread.....Had some catching up to do!
YES! Today was a white out and SO cold and windy! What's that saying about March coming in like a lion and going out like lamb? Let's hope so!
My frustration today has been all the clouds of Black Birds invading my feeders--which hang under my patio roof and are not visible from "as the birds fly..."---but I guess they have learned, over the years where the goodies are.
I have one of those 3-tube feeders that hold a lot of seed. I had just spent over $26 on bird seed and filled them all, and also a regular feeder (like a little house) with mixed seed.
Well--ALL day long, I have been banging on my LR windows to scare off the Black Birds so some of the little ones can have their share. BUT--How long can I stand there banging on my windows? As soon as I scare the Black ones away--the smaller birds just converge on the feeders. Then, one of the rauceous biggies comes back--and all the little birds scatter and sit in the bushes and wait!
I bang on the windows--the bad guys fly off--and the little ones come back------and so on--for hours today!
Finally, I gave up! These guys emptied all the tubes in the feeder (probably about 6lbs of seed) and the other bird-feeder as well. Then they just about devoured my 2 suet cakes and finally left as the dusk was coming.
I HATE IT! I HATE IT!......The Black Birds are such "pigs"!
Here's a pic. of the little ones fighting over space for some seeds in the few minutes they have before "they" converge again.....
These pictures were taken through my dirty LR window....
Wow! looks like you East-coasters really got your share of the snow!
I must say it is nice to change places for a change with you folks.
Early... does your peepers count as one of the 3 times the peepers get frosted, if so, bring them inside, warm them up and frost them again, then repete and spring will be here.
Morning everyone, Flower, I love your daffys. I bet you and your friend had a great time in the snow yesterday. I thought it would never stop, but it did and it is cold and about 15 deg,. at 6:30 this a.m. Today is beautifiul and sunny and really cold and windy, but it is to warm up in a day or so, so I think I will survive. I need exercise and fresh air. I went to the greenhouse this morning and the cosmos and statice seeds have sprouted and I only put them in less than a week ago. Something is working right. I thought I would send you something to make you all smile today. These are two of my little friends I start my day with. When I am down and grumpy I watch these two play and eat. Everyday they are together and chattering and having fun. They go back to their own cages at night. But during the day he stays in her cage. Tweeter is the big one, a female sun conure and Sage is the Green Pied Lovebird. This was taken this morning in the sunshine.
Speaking of birds, the blackbirds were here also yesterday. Gitigal I have never seen them eat like that. There must have been a whole flock . They were red and yellow winged blackbirds and they were so hungry. They emptied one very large feeder and a bucket of seed on the ground. I recycle my inside bird seed into a bucket and when it gets full I put it out for the outside birds. I was amazed to see them so hungry this year.
They are a pain . They even eat the dried cat food in the barn for the barn cats. That really makes me angry. Have a good day and stay warm. Think Spring.
Ahhh, that's where all the red winged blackbirds went...I had them in the summer.
Your little friends are cute.
Flower, you can come down and visit with me and watch the barn cat try and sneak up on those blackbirds. She is soooo funny. Yesterday she was up to her belly in the snow and got stuck trying to sneak up on all these birds. Like no one was going to see her. What a cat. She is not hungry, but she is a hunter and she will jump up to the feeder and try and catch them while they eat on the feeder. Hysterical. The blackbirds are not here this morning, all the other little darlings are and they are eating away. I have several pairs of crows that visit me also, and yesterday, a surprise visit from a red tailed hawk. The crows usually keep the hawks away but not yesterday. You are north of me so I guess they came south for the day. LOL Hugs. What are you doing today? Some of the roads are a mess, especially those back Chesterfield roads. 206 is bare and our barnyard is a mess. I am going to pay bills online. Never did it before but I am going to give it a go. Stay warm.....the temp will be going up the end of the week. I hope.
Neat dog. He looks like a real guard dog. Very impressive. I bet he loves the snow.
Those dogs usually do love water and snow. What is his name?
Wall-e
Soooooooo cute.
JB, Nice birds, do you keep them in the Greenhouse? We had a neighbor that raised all kinds of birds. When we first moved here he had all kinds of chickens, ducks, geese. He had a separate building with Love Birds, Cockatiels, lots of fancy Finches and Button Quail running around lose in the cages. Just all kinds of stuff and I would take the kids over to visit he was such a nice person. Later on he started to get some Parrots, so one day my son found and caught a rather large green parrot in our yard. I said that it must be Woody's and poor Josh pretty young at the time said "Maybe it wasn't and could we keep it. Now we lived out in the country with not much around (at the time). So I told him we would take it over and if it wasn't Woody's he could keep it. Woody was so happy when we brought it back, he had just brought it home and it got away while he was moving it inside. Really thought it was gone and a quite expensive bird. He gave my kids a really nice Cockatiel as a thank you for returning the bird, actually wanted to give each one their own bird but I said one would be enough. Boy were they excited.
Hi Holly, No I do not keep the birds in the greenhouse. They would die in no time if they got a wiff of anything I may put on the plants for insects. I have a special area of my house that is all windows and plants and that is where the cages are. I only have six parrots left from my flock of over 100, when I was breeding them. I kept these because I raised them from babies and they were my favorites or they had a defect of some sort that I would not sell them because of it. I would never sell a bird that was not perfect. I keep their wings clipped because I do not like to clean up bird poop in my living area. They stay in their area most of the time, except for the big guy who sometimes crawls down on the floor and takes a walk. That is not often because the dog will not play with him any more, he just goes and hides. I used to take a ball and roll it to the bird and he would roll it to the dog and the dog would roll it back. it was hysterical to watch, but you had to be careful because the bird would hurt the dog if he got ahold of him. Birds are such wonderful pets.
Hello everyone,
I am new to the Mid-Atlantic forum, but so happy to find you. I had several spring plants that were peeking; the snowdrops at the front steps and daffodils on the south side of the house were full of buds and my Viburnum "Dawn" was almost in full bloom from the sixty degree temp. we had a last week. But now everything is buried under about 6 inches of that white stuff! I was so hoping we were going to make it to spring without a late snow storm. Guess I didn't wish hard enough! I hope the March lion is done with us after this. I need to get dirty in the garden.
Kat
JBerger- very interesting about the birds.
devonrose- Hi- You and me both- about getting dirty. I have been sneaking downstairs and potting some things, its almost addictive to me!
Welcome Kat, we are all sitting here waiting for Spring....some of these lucky ladies are already playing in the dirt, but those of us under the white stuff are just praying for a quick thaw. The weather here today is actually going to go about freezing today. I feel I should go to the beach. It seems this cold spell has been foreever. I can not even see my field plants, there is nearly a foot of snow from blowing and drifting in the field of daffodils. I could cry. All of their little heads will be brown when it melts I just know it.
I think I will go out in the greenhouse and pull some weeds. later ladies.
Now you all did it!!!!! You made me go outside and look for something to share....
Can't say there is much! Things are, sort of, in their infant state of emerging.....I just hope this warmer weather stays around for a while and does not kill whatever has emerged.....
OK! So--here's what I found:
1--My Camellia flower-buds looking plump....the bush is covered with them.....as usual!
