...in their yard???
My dwarf Magnolia's fuzzy little buds are getting a bit bigger...
The Daffies are barely poking their "fingers" up through the soil...
The Daphne...hmmm buds, maybe?? Course "this" is her time to bloom...
Gonna peek tomorrow and see what else I can find...
How about you...what's giving a spring hello to you???
Anyone else see spring peeking...
Not yet.
I glimpsed some Hyacinths this morning and there are some others that I put in new this year. Didn't really have time to stop and investigate.
I've had species tulips and grape hyacinths poking up foliage for a while now, but they always do that, so I'm not sure it counts. Buds swelling though... maybe...
Ill take some pix later today when I come back. My little Rattlesnake orchid made it through the winter (Goodyera pubescens)
I know it's early...but I get so excited when I see things coming back from their winter rest!!!
You're right -- I do have some hyacinths starting to peek through!
I've been watching my witch hazel with great anticipation... a few of its little flowers finally opened today, and there is no scent!! I bought this and planted it by the deck anticipating a lovely late winter perfume... :-(
Yesterday I observed swelling buds on the corydalis, which is always a late leafer, and teeny buds on the vitex, and some columbines just poking out in a sheltered area, but they could certainly get nipped if we get cold again. I don't see any daffodils starting yet. I was looking out over the field with binocculars from the kitchen for them, since I forgot to look while I was out. I was too lazy to tromp over again. We are always two weeks behind Charlottesville here, even though we're only 35 miles from there. The temperatures make my garden a little crazy, mistaking it for spring by the brick wall, but still winter in other spots. We have had a few lights gusts in the last hour. Weatherman calling for possibilty of sustained winds of 40 MPH with gusts of 60 MPH tonight and tomorrow. Battening down the birdfeeders later.
Yep the breeze is picking up here now.
I have daffie fingers by a south facing wood privacy fence. They're my official first spring thing here!
Ohhh witch hazel, Jill? What do they say its scent is like?
I don't know exactly, but the guy at the nursery said it was fragrant enough to smell halfway across the yard... I practically sniffed a little bloom right up my nose and got nothing!
NOTE to self - NEED witch hazel. Jill - maybe it's only certain times of day?
I found snowdrops!
Chantell, Lover of all things scented! I have sniffed the Witch Hazel at Montecello, but was disappointed that I could not detect a scent, even when I crushed a leaf. Once in
Tennessee, I smelled a beautifully scented shrub, when hardly anything else was in bloom. Could it have been clove? It was heavenly. DH couldn't smell a thing. Didn't know what I was going on about.
Sally, You're probably 3 weeks ahead of me. I'm checking my notes from last year.
Guilty as charged - LOVE them smellie good things!!! I was told by an Asian gentleman who runs an orchid shop that (and I'm paraphrasing here) the male and female sniffer perception vastly differs. So there you have it...WE (as females) should count on each other re sniffer appeal. There's my stolen wisdom for the day! ^_^
I want a witch hazel plant. I planted one years ago but either the drought or the black walnuts killed it.
I think a lot of fragrant shrubs and trees vary drastically from year to year in the amount of fragrance depending on conditions. I've noticed too some will have little or no fragrance when very young and then later will drive you wild with the scent.
Maybe next year, or even maybe in a few weeks when it gets more blooms, more warm weather, whatever, you'll get more fragrance.
My fringe tree was fabulously fragrant last spring. The year before, you could barely smell it.
Alrightey everyone - I hate to be the spoilsport (and NO, Chantell, you can NOT put your fingers in your ears)....snow is in the forecast for next week...I know we are all chomping at the bit - but, as erratic as the weather has been this winter...
(:-l ~~ So THERE!!!
Spring "peaked" here earlier this afternoon. Winter is on it's way back! I did see some little daylily shoots peeking up though.
Hi LadyGardener. Looks like we should tie everything down tonight!
early_bloomer
Please note: the above plants are protected by the woods to their north and my husband's woodshed to their south. I call it "our" (no longer) secret garden. ;-)
Hart, I'll give it another chance then... my Witch Hazel is young (maybe 5 feet tall).
Getttin me a witch hazel "just in case" it ends up smelling good...I can be patient when I must...LOL
I lost my young Witch Hazel to those darn voles!!! Still want to try another one.
Buttoneer, I like your Goodyera pubescens. I was wondering how much of the Arum italicum do you have? I had 2 small pieces, last summer I dug up a violet and gave it away. Then realized that it was right where one of my Arum's was growing, now I only have one and it hasn't spread much I was thinking they would spread a good bit. I was just doing a search last week to find them for sale. Looks like you have the same Hardy Cyclamen I have. Mine were pretty small plugs when I got them last year from the Co-op. I'm waiting to see if they will come back again, No sign of them yet.
Holly, I had some frogs out yesterday too! They were pretty active for this time of year, maybe they know more then Phil. Have not heard peepers yet, but then I can't hear anything with all the wind we are getting.
Hi! Early Bloomer, Are you in Kansas yet? Boss called this morning, power is out in Conneaut, Ohio where I work, so I am home today. How are the creeks out your way, Springboro seems to get hit with flooding when it get bad like this.
I just looked out the window a saw a panel on my privacy fence blew down, Hope it is not damaged! Also I won't be able to just let the dogs out as the fence is part of their area, and MaryChris is the escape artist.
I noticed some snow drops starting to pop out of the soil yesterday, looks like they have a lot of buds this year. Some dafs are also up , I try to plant the early bloomers as I can't want for garden flowers.
Buttoner, How hardy is the Hardy Cyclamen, wonder if it would make it in zone 5 ? I think I tried one years ago, but it might have been in a bad spot.
Phil, the weather frog. LOL

Holly, I got the Goodyera pubescens from Spring Haven Nurseries in Newburg, Pa up above Newville. You know, girl, you simply must go with me to that place. He sells all shade plants and his prices are very good. You have to make an appt to go there. He is at the bottom of a mountain, he has wonderful stuff. The group of us from Work would go there in April. If interested, let me know & we will go. This invite is for any DG-ers who are interested to go along.
Here is the link:

I have placed the link at this forum for anybody interested. Thanks.

The Arum italicum spreads very slowly. Mine has been there since 2006, Doesn't Walmart sell that in packs in the spring?
The cyclamen I bought came in a 3 inch pot from Mrs Martins in Lancaster County last year when we had that mini shopping trip there. It looks really good.
lady-YAY for no-work days! Thanks for the report from "Near Lake Erie Phil"
Thanks Buttoneer, Let me know when you are going to Spring Haven, I'd love to go along if I can. Walmart???? I will keep my eyes open, if you see them let me know please! My cyclamen came from one of the DG Co-ops it's 'Something Magic'.
It's very windy here you can hardly go outside to do anything. Ric and I were running errands and I came home to find my potting shed blew over. It's pretty heavy hard to beleive that it blew over, but was just sitting in place not attached to the ground. Ric said we aren't even going to pick it up until the storms blow through.
So sorry to see your shed on the ground. Hope nothing got damaged.
I took the dogs out for a short walk on their leads, the wind starting blowing again and the trees were groaning so I headed back, hate to get bonked in the head by a falling limb.
