Coffee Break # 4 Waiting on Spring!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have a Braun. Pretty good. I never liked soda - even as a kid.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Coffee is my downfall. I'm trying to cut back. Now I'm drinking tea or green tea (tastes so weak to me though) in the afternoon. Other than coffee/tea, I drink only water. Two of my doctors down here insist on 64 ounces of water and 35 grams of fiber a day. Sometimes I don't get in the 64, but I get close. I've never liked soda, but used to drink too much iced tea. Coffee, soda and tea don't count in the 64 ounces (although my morning orange juice does). That's because drinks with caffeine are diuretics and don't allow your body to retain the benefit of the water. My primary doctor said to me....you wouldn't pour a coke into your car radiator, would you? You're essentially doing that when you don't drink water.

My coffeemaker is a Braun, and I have a Braun Tassimo to make the latte and cappuchino I'm cutting back on. LOL

Sorry, Louise.

I like that coffee bean plant photo.

I use the old easy standby, the one cup coffee filter cone. It's easy!

I use a french press and then dump the grounds on the azelas.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I save the grounds also. Coffeemaker is just a cheapy. Black and Decker.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The grounds are great for almost anything - not just acid-loving plants. They are not going to change the pH noticeably.

But if trying to lose weight you want to drink a glass of water before you eat so you fill up faster and don't overeat.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I've heard a lot about diet soda being horrible but I've never seen it backed up in something reputable,
. Any good links?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my one friend always yells at her kids when they come over... "Don't drink the diet soda.. it gives you A@@ cancer"

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I've read that a lot of diet soda can give you symptoms similar to MS.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just found you guys.
My coffee is a blend of French Roast and 8 O'Clock.
I used to add Bustillo for that continual buzzzz.
With Splenda and a bit of 2% milk

mmmm ... comfort breakfast foods ...... mmmmmm

I made my favorite this morning in the cast iron skillet.

Potatoes slices (boiled in chicken broth), browned slowly in butter, then covered with beaten eggs, topped with crumbled bacon or sausage bits (pre-cooked, of course) and cheese, then baked / cook covered in the skillet.

MMMMMMMMMM

I need to get that blueberry muffin recipe out for y'all

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I made french toast out of last week's bread. Yummo! This week's bread is in the machine.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

no willie you need to go exercise and work the breakfast off! sounded delicious

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

now I have to fire up my bread machine... it's overdue!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - sounds yummy, Willie, but I would get on the treadmill for two hours.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I made a bread recipe from the old Betty Crocker on Wed. It was really good. Herb Bread. Used nutmeg, sage and caraway seeds. Not a combo I would think to put together.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Not a breakfast you want to have everyday, THAT's for sure!!

If you do it just right, the hash browns make a nice crust for the quiche (if you want to call it that) above!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

She needed your breakfast!

I'll bet! That is no small swim!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Never, ever, EVER try Jamician hot peppers! I bought some for my pidgeon peas and rice and I got some of the juice on my face and now I look like I am going to get a balck eye! Not to mention the face on fire business! OMG! I put a tiny bit of them in my rice! Now I know why I used to not cook. I s&@k at it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ouch! Feel better. Been there with habanero - in an even more sensitive area!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hee Hee

Ha - try the Bhut Jolokia - you get hot touching dried seeds.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

...and keep them away from Victor!

JoAnn - Pardon my ignorance, but what the heck is "Bustillo"?
I perked up at the "continual buzz" part...

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Victor - I've read that article and discussed it with my primary Dr. who knows one of the researchers on that project. She said that even the researchers in the article mention that you need 4 -6 glasses a day. She is also not convinced, largely because of her personal knowledge about the research that this article is based on. I look at it from a largely common sense approach, if you think of the percentage of water that makes up the body and so many credible doctors in various specialties (mine being gastroenterologist and internal medicine) who do recommend it. I also give lots of credibility to the SuperFoods doctors who came up with a very sound approach to eating for health. They recommend 6 glasses a day. I'm not a slave to it, but I do feel much better whenever I drink at least 6 glasses. It's really not that much when you realize that the size of the "glass" is only a paper cup full.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

. . . I am thinking. . . why would anyone drink baking soda? I then I remember, Americans call pop "soda' . . . Good thing too, 'cause baking soda in water would taste terrible.

"if" I eat something and get heartburn I drink water and baking soda. DH will drink an alka seltzer witch has baking soda in it. So do water, baking soda and a touch of lemon - cheaper!

Found this info from Rawstory....
Aspartame, meanwhile, has been documented to have over 92 different side effects ranging from seizures to slurred speech. Aspartame, via methanol poisoning, mimics the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, when individuals experiencing these symptoms discontinued use of aspartame products the symptoms dissipated. According to Dr. Wurtman, a professor of neuroendocrinology at MIT, an individual who consumes four to five aspartame sweetened drinks per day for a prolonged period is putting themselves at the risk of affecting their brain's neurotransmitters. This interference can result in irritability, moodswings, anxiety, insomnia, migraine headaches and depression.

While the risks of aspartame appear great, the product in diet sodas may also be responsible for promoting weight gain — as counterintuitive as it may seem. The sweet taste of diet soda creates a cephalic phase response that causes the liver to prepare to receive sugar. When no sugar appears, the liver prompts the body to eat, which can result in increased hunger and over eating. Diet sodas also contain caffeine. Caffeine consumption can cause overindulgence when the body confuses the hunger and thirst sensations.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't trust any of those sugar subs. It's always years before the FDA acts. I stick with real sugar - just don't use much.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Webcam for that Alaska volcano. It's steaming now.
