Coffee Break # 4 Waiting on Spring!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Where do you get the Hawaiian sugar? (Don't say Hawaii!)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Our grocery stores carry it. You can also get it at Whole Foods. It has large brownish crystals....wonderful on top of a muffin. Yumm.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

The WORST coffee I ever had was at the Portland airport in OR. Early flight, so needed coffee. I actually thought it was left over from the day ( or week) before. Could only stomach a little bit. So, the next time we visited OR. I tried it again, cuz I thought it was just a bad day. It tasted the same. YUCKO!!! It tasted burnt. That was a good way of putting it Victor.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Here is a good web site for coffee. I believe that they only have the coffee than is grown under trees.
http://www.treefrogcoffees.com/ It's good. They also have small sample packs so you can try different coffees.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Diet pepsi, 2 ice cubes. I'm one of those that never drinks coffe ehot or cold.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

mmmmm muffins ......

I'll have to dig out and share my secret world famous high-protein blueberry muffin recipe for all y'all to enjoy. I just made a batch this Monday past.

It's a good one with whole wheat flour and wheat germ. Also uses powdered milk, which may sound gross, but has twice the protein and none of the fats.

The recipe has a crumb topping, but is good without it, or even better .... use Hawaiian sugar on top of them!!

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

POST THAT MUFFIN RECIPE! Sounds wonderful! We may need another thread for muffin recipes. I like milk or cream only in my coffee. I really hate Cremora in coffee, and I hate those little "creamers" that are either fake or those that you don't have to refrigerate, even if they are supposedly cream. Gack! I've tried grinding my own, but I think you've hit the nail on the head, you seem to need quite a lot to get a good strong cup of coffee, and beans are so expensive. And Starbucks is awful, I don't see the draw. I used to work in a Day's Inn (whole 'nother story), but I found out why some places have such awful coffee that come from those machines with a spigot....it's only hot syrup, it's not brewed at all! That's probably the kind you had in Portland!

Maxwell House Regular 3/4 tps Sugar and Milk. 2-4 Cups a day. Milk with my meal, then water. Later in the day beer. Then more water for the rest of the night. Now I am Thirsty!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I use espresso roast beans, maybe that's why I don't use more than usual. I have tried other beans and it's not as good.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll be posting the recipe, rest assured!

I don't find you need a lot of beans to grind, just need to grind it well.

One trouble with this fine of a grind is, if you are like me, and have a wire screen filter in your maker, tiny specks of the coffee bean make their way into the coffee and can have fun on the empty tummy. And also add to the caffeine buzz!!

A paper filter eliminated this problem.

I have been making a conscious effort to drink more water.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh yes, Debi, exactly! The darker the roast, the more flavor .... very true .... which is why I mix my vanilla beans with a handful of espresso, to boost the flavor and color.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Quote: "I have been making a conscious effort to drink more water"

Me too! I think my kidneys have started to protest on the lack of water in my diet.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

More water and yesterday I started with green tea. Got one with blueberry in it - was very good, no sugar needed.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Blueberries are an excellent anti-oxidant!!

I noticed my skin was looking dehydrated .... wintertime is tough with the central forced hot air. And, I was told Pepsi does not count as water.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I was told pepsi does count if it's decaf.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have been drinking Lipton Green Tea & Honey for 2-3 years now. It's my favorite!! Very seldom drink soda and most friut drinks make my belly hurt.....to much acid.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

mmmmm caffeine ........ mmmmmmm

Thomaston, CT

Can't take the acid in coffee, but I do drink Dunkin's iced & hot lattes, & cappucinos---must be decaf, though. Have started to drink green tea with lemon grass, but just regular decaf tea with fruit juice to sweeten is my favorite. Going to get a cup right now.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm going to make a cuppa and be right back.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Where did everyone go?

Here but not for long. Have to go out in that snippy weather :-/

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm off to make butterscotch pudding from scratch with real butter and burbon - I don't have any scotch.

Sounds interestingly different. I am off to the grocery store....... brrrrr

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Learned to drink coffee at school in a hospital so I am not picky. One small sugar and skim milk and as hot as possible in the am. Now tea is another matter all together. Must have honey and a couple drops of milk. Also should steep long enough for it to be strong. Also like herbal teas in the evening or hot chocolate.
Yum butterscotch pudding.
Getting ready for another cup now.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I love cofee. Can't drink it with any kind of sweetener. Just a little 1/2 & 1/2. I can take it with whole milk, but anything less doesn't work for me.
Because I drink several cups, I make it with half decaff coffee.

Count me among those who don't understand the appeal of Starbucks. One good thing event coffee is they've kept some people out of bars. We might see a sequel to "Cheers" placed in a coffee shop.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i do maxwell house columbian coffee or the kirkland Colombian - usually switch back and forth with hazelnut creamola and a little sugar. DD is usually to sweet - really have to tell them to hold back on both sugar and cream.
2 cups get the blood flowing - 3 and i'll be sweating. very sensitive system i have here.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

You wouldn't want to upset your delicate sensibilities! ;^)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm afraid to ask about four cups, Bill.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Harper!

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Just like you pixie dd 2 and 2 when I am out and at home its folgers black or for a treat Lavazza Italian with cream and sugar.
Robin

South Hamilton, MA

drink diet green tea, zero sprite, skim milk. Can't have sugar, but I don't think that it would make coffee taste like anything except a bitter herb. I don't even like coffee ice cream, so all folks can growl 'why did you post'?

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

Hi, y'all in the north :) Sorry to butt in, looking for some sight-seeing info for the Baltimore area. I'm traveling with a friend to a town NE of Baltimore called...North East LOL. Anyway, my friend is going for training and I'm side-seat driving hoping to do some sight-seeing or meet some DG'ers while I'm there. Will arrive Monday the 9th in the afternoon and will leave sometime Thursday the 12th probably noonish depending on what we find to get into, her training ends Wed evening. This will be my first trip to that area. I'm googling tourism for Baltimore but always go to DG for the best information ;)
Would especially like historical spots/areas, indoor botanical gardens or the like, and great places to eat of course! Thanks bunches for any info.

BTW, we'll be in a van so I can take plants home if there are any good gardening spots I need to check out while I'm there...sigh, too bad it isn't spring. I'm checking out GoGardening, too. Gotta love DG!!!

i guess i need to watch what i type..............

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Lana,

The Mid-Atlantic forum would be the best place to ask. Have fun!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Just start at the visitors center at the Harbor and they will keep you busy all day. Take the free walking tours - we did and liked them. The duck tour was fun, too though pricey.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Being on the west coast, I am behind you by 3 hours.
So Willie, I am working on my 2nd round of espresso shots, quite hungry, and there is not a muffin to be found.....

Dave - you questioned the "draw" re: Starbucks. We don't understand this either.
Aside from my previous comments about their coffee (from a marketing aspect), the only other thing I can point to is that sense of belonging or community. Their stores are full most of the time; long lines are typical, and the stores seem to be on every block. Perhaps this is attractive to many who, due to lifestyle, seem to be able to connect better with others in this type setting. That being said, the gathering part I understand - it's the product and its cost I'm not sure of.
Out here, Starbucks & the shopping malls are really the only places for teens to hang out, especially during inclement weather.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

How about types of coffee makers? We use Bunn.

I heard a doctor make a comment about soda...stay away from it cause either I'll be treating you for diabetes because you're drinking the regular or cancer for drinking the sugar free.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah, I decided yesterday to sub diet pepsi with green tea, should make a difference in how I feel.
My favorite cocktail is vodka in diet cherry pepsi, wonder if I could sub green tea for that!?!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

yes you can substitute. It's......different. Green tea makes a great chaser.
