Bonnie, light is the key to germinating brugs. All mine germinated in my spare bedroom by a window and 12 hrs of florescent light. The night time temps by the window would drop to 62°. So heat is not as important. Patience, I am learning, is the key to everything. I have another Texas star hibiscus germinating one week behind the first one. I guess like people, each one is different. I wait with bated breath for the seeds. Thanks so much. Congrats on your egg tree seedlings. My three are starting to take off and get rather tall. They will need a transplant pretty quick.
Shes's about too...42
Jeanne! I was starting to get worried about you.. how are you feeling? Whoa, now... I wouldn't say my "egglings" are taking off, they seem to have trouble shedding the hull... I've moved them to more light....Jeanne, maybe I should send those maya seeds priority?? lol.. I'll stick a couple extra's in and send it 1st class.. you should get it early next week.. I'm on a coffee break.. it's almost warm enough to open the garage door and turn on the fans to circulate some fresh air downstairs.. Cody... are those cool seed trays on your kitchen counter top?? :) Way to go! I'm going to use egg cartons and "gladware" that doesn't have a matching lid.. and the lids that don't have matching containers will be drip trays..plus I'll regain at least 1/2 a shelf in the cupboard.. Cody, your light looks like about 24 inches long? With regular fluorescent bulbs? I have a 2 bulb shop light unit I'm rigging up on "blocks" so I can move the unit higher once they emerge and start to grow. I bought a bulk pkg of light tubes a while back when I was "working", so I used a gift card to get the new fixture..whaa-lah! no cash outlay.. (prolly shoulda tried to find a used 4-bulber,... oh, well, this one easier to maneuver by myself..) anyway, I hope to start more kinds of seeds, some on a heat mat and some in a cooler atmosphere.. May end up with rigging up Christmas lights in cake pans under some..w/kitchen cooling racks to keep them from direct contact? (not THAT organized on my seed-starting craze) I just know it's getting me through winter.. lol Thank you both for the advice... Brug seeds aren't like a cup of dirt with a bean in it... but I'm learning to have lots of things to watch so I don't have to be soo patient with one thing..thanks for the great conversation..ya'll are a great inspiration to me.. my break is over.. enjoy the day and be kind to yourselves. I'm lovin the pics..
looks like today will be another 'do-nuthin' day :o( rainy outside :o( just when I finally got up the strength to transplant that thyme! oh well, it will all be watered well when I do get to transplant! LOL!
taking my DD to get her tattoo today ! :o)
hugs to all that need them
AnjL
"B"---In the past I have been known to use my OVEN as a temporary 'greenhouse' - LOL!!! Works wonderfully. Only drawback is to make certain that the oven is empty before turning the heat on :) I leave the appliance light switched on which supplies light and warmth and have had seeds germinate in 1-2 days using this method!!! When there's a will, there's a way!!!!!!!!! DH never knows what I'm gonna do next to support my addiction :)
Jan
Yes Bonnie,it is 24inches long.I don't have anything to put my seeds in so i just went to the dollar store and goy those.Yes it is also with regular fluorescent lights.Bonnie get us up to date your your seeds.
Bonnie, you will have egg tree seeds coming out of your ears. I sent quite a few. Grow them and give to friends and family. That's what I do. One egg will yield a kagillion seeds. I'm looking forward to growing some Maya's.
I sprout all my seeds under three florescent lights in a 3-way floor lamp. The table they sit on is in a southern exposure window. They get put in cat food containers, or peat pots or the store bought paper pots. Then they are put into zip lock baggies until they germinate. They get no extra heat. I do think it takes some plants longer to germinate when it's colder and cloudy. But once the sun is out and heating up the window... thus the baggies, they germinate pretty quickly.
I do like the oven idea though. I wonder if my hubby would consent to that. I doubt it. He's the cook in the family and uses the oven at least once a day.
I have two vines that haven't germinated yet on the table. I germinated three of them two years a go by putting them in the dark on top of the fridge. So that's where they are now. They are at least six years old, so they may not germinate. But they two yrs ago. We'll see.
Anjl, waiting on that picture of her tattoo. I hope she did not chicken out at the last minute.
Good night all.
LK
It sounds like everyone is germinating seeds and I've done nothing the last few days. My brug has 2 beautiful pink blooms and we got a couple of hours of rain today so that should make her happy. The rain is welcomed but not all the weeds that go with it. The yellow NOID just sits in the pot looking sad. She hasn't got a Y so guess that means no blooms until one appears. She does need some special TLC I think.
Morning everyone. Coffee is on! Can't wait to start seeing everyone blooms.
LK
:) good morning.. it's fake spring today.. supposed to have springlike weather thru the wkend! I'll accept that! Thx for the coffee, LK.. I wanna see the tatoo, also! Jan THAT is a brilliant idea about the oven... might try it.. I splurged on another starting tray.. w/6 pks... $4 at Dollar Gen. Wally wants $6 this year, and I won't pay that much for plastic film.. lol I use them from year to year so I justified the purchase. My early spring hoop house made of cattle panels project has been down-graded to 2 old swingset frames... going to have to make them work somehow.. I can get pretty resourceful, if necessary. Guess I COULD find me a farmer "friend" and borrow some.. I wanted to use at least 3, but at almost $25 a panel, it's not in my budget this year. Then I need to find someone with a truck to get them here.. always something, right? It's okay... I'm learning to be patient - I think ;) I have 3 Sweet manihot hibiscus seedlings, 1 Old Timey hardy hibiscus, 3 other kinds hardy hibiscus that aren't showing ... lots of cups of dirt or perlite that look like they should have something green shooting out.. (like brugs, datura, passionvines and egg trees) I buried a few small marigold seeds yesterday (they'll germinate quickly and offer me encouragement)... Debra gave me some smaller blooming seeds and I hope to see their little bloom heads blooming inside. I have lily seeds and buddah belly plant seeds from Joyce that aren't showing... yet.. Lots of seeds to start later..trying some Radar Love Clematis...It's still early to start seeds, but I'm sure ya'll know it helps with the Cabin Fever symptoms... Jeanne, thanks again for the egg tree seeds.. I'll take a whole trunk load of egg trees (might have to take the seed, lol) to the RU! I did get your pkg to the PO, yesterday.. Now, I think I'll take this coffee out on the deck... I love outside (when it's warm). Hope everyone's day is filled w/ sunshine and love! Pegi, if you want some brug seeds to play with, let me know. Maya has 7 blooms hanging pretty down there... funny how the 1st one stayed pretty waiting for the rest of the buds to open... aw, I just love brugs.
Thanks AuntB I would love to see if I can grow brugs from seed. Everyone talking about egg tree plants and that has me interested too. I only got one Buddah Belly seed to sprout and I think I should put it in a container of its own to see if it will grow any more. Just sits there with one leaf on it. A few of the day lilies came up and I better transplant them too. If hubby doesn't get my grow light set up I'm going to have to do it myself. Tells me what he is going to do and then it never happens.
The sun is starting to come out and don't know if we will get any more rain. Time to look at my lovely pink brug, hoping the wind didn't do any damage. I'm going to be gone 8 days in April and I'm already obsessing how my plants will do. Don't think I can depend of DH to take special care of them. Well, off to grocery shopping, not one of my favorite things. Later my friends.
hey what is up with the weather. Alot of you up north had better temps than we did. Yesterday 49 high and 24 low here. Brrrr! Sounds like you all are ready for spring!!
Hello everyone!!!! Hope you are doing good?
Karen i hope you are feeling better.
Pegi, glad to hear you had Buddah sprout. I haven't even tried yet. I have more seeds. It just keeps blooming and seeding all winter. Tomorrow is the flower lawn and garden show yeah....can't wait. I am stocking up first thing. I realize most of the stuff is left from last year, but I have had good luck with it and the caladiums are dirt cheap.
Pegi I will be glad to send you some egg tree seeds. Just let me know.
Bonnie, I will let you know when the seeds get here. Again thanks.
We are to have great weather for a week with some much needed rain. I emptied the GH this morning to let everybody stretch and get some real sunshine. Then a little water and hopefully some rain.
I have another Texas Star sprouting, Yea! I'm still waiting on the MG trees, columbines and vines. At least I have five different MGs blooming. They are so cheerful. I will be sowing more of those next weekend. April will be here before I know it. I want everybody ready to go into the ground. I also have to sow my hubby's tomato plants next weekend.
I ordered a blue mason bees nest kit today. I hope to help increase the little pollinators around here. I share my GH with the bees. They love my blossoms and sit on my shoulder or hands and arms when I'm in there. I do enjoy them.
Everybody have fun tomorrow playing in the dirt. Ain't life grand.
Well, I hope when I put Buddah Belly in its own home it will start growing. The others just didn't sprout. If you have more to spare happgarden I'd like to try again.
I wish I had a garden show to go to, have fun.
Texasgrower I would love some egg tree seeds. All seem to have more luck than I do, but I'm not giving up.
We are supposed to have several more days of rain, so no playing in the dirt for me. I guess I'll do some repotting between rain drops.
Hey ya'll! Well........I hope I am through vomiting for awhile. My gosh, 5-6 days of it straight has nearly killed me. I am as weak as a kitten. But I was able to actually eat a meal tonight without losing it; I was so hungry for once.
I moved all my Bruggies outdoors for a few days to get some fresh air and sunshine. It was 72 here today. They all had aphids pretty bad, so they got sprayed with soapy water. Next year will be SO much better for me with them all in the ground. I have to admit, I'm pretty tired of caring for a huge amount of plants indoors. No matter how well you care for them they just don't thrive like they do in the yard. The Brugs were the hardest for me to keep 100% in the greenhouse. They are are the only ones in the whole room I had a problem with aphids on also.
Jeanne, my baby egg trees are about 6 inches tall I think. I have a feeling folks at our RU are gonna be sick of them between both of us giving them away, haha! They are so unique and wonderful though! Maggi is already talking on the RU thread about the brugs she will be giving away again ☺ I will try to stop in tomorrow for a longer chat. Love to you all my friends!
Pegi, I have extra Buddah seeds and I will send you some on Monday.
Karen sorry to hear you are still feeling bad.I hope you feel better real soon.
Good night everyone!!!!!
Oh my God! It snowed for about 20 hours and thanks to the wind or whatever, we onlygot between 4-6 inches on the ground....then it turned really cold and that just makes me crazy. I hate wind, and cold weather and icy conditions because I must admit, at 80 my balance and footing is not the best and I could fall and hurt myself then I would have to jump off a bridge or something because I am not a good patient. Anyhow, after three days of freezing temps in the teens and low twenties we are to have a nice day today, in the 30s; Anything is better than what we have had. I took cuttings of some houseplants while being crabby and put them in water to root, which I do not usually do. I also did some needlefelting, some paperwork, and played games on the Nintendo DS. You know I had to be homebound. LOL
No walking in this mess, it was too icy to get to the treadmill in my little workshop next door. I did keep the greenhouse going but other than that, a total waste.
Linda Kay, the tree business was great this year. To see the gang and the snowy trees, you can check out the website, http://www.rob-lynfarm.com and you will see us all. We have such fun. We sold three hundred trees (which is more than we wanted to sell) and we still have enough for one good year, maybe two, then we will need to close for a year to wait for the new new trees to get bigger. We have mostly the same customers each year, Military families, neighbors, some people from NY and CT who come here to visit relataives and buy their tree to take home...a real variety of fun people. It is like a big party that lasts a month.
I think I took up enough of your time. God Bless you all and get better soon. Spring is coming. I wish someone would shoot that Groundhog for seeing his shadow. LOL JB
JB! Thanks Lady! Loved the link and seeing the memories being made! What fun, indeed! Looks like Santa Claus gets his tree from your farm! lol What a fun festive family time! but.... the holidays are over, we've obsessed on our plants as much as possible, buried tiny seeds in effort to see green.. now we wait...and wait....... May 1st is my target date.... I don't blame you a bit staying inside when it's cold and wintry out.. it's safer.. I don't even like to get out when it's in the single digits. LOUISE! Hi to you! I've been thinking about you... as we're enjoying 60-70 degree weather for a few days... just doesn't seem right..(or fair to you) Joyce, could you please snag a few more of those buddah belly seeds for me? I'm losing hope daily on the ones I buried. I just love plants that bloom in the winter and buddah is so unusual. Please post a bloom pic IF you have time... Pegi, I'll get an envelope in the mail to you first part of the week.. (((Jeanne))), I'll check my mail box today for the egg tree seeds... Ok, I think enough time has lapsed.. the potted up brug cuttings didn't even know they were potted.. not even one wilted leaf... (I'm so happy bout that)... I've been using the recipe on them all winter and I'm sold on the stuff. I found a marked down MG sprayer, so I'll be feeding that way a lot next year. Karen, glad to see you back amongst us.. even for a quick post.. rest and try to eat so you will get your strength back, we miss you here. That is the worse kind of sick, to me.. In that little brug guide I mailed you, look about the Tree and Shrub stuff I applied last fall to combat aphids, supposed to last for a year. I'm happy to report, it is working. (Or something is anyway)..I used it on my tropical hibiscus and the brugs (not the cuttings) now the mites.... still have them KINDA under control... but that's how it will be until the lady bugs have a feast once they go back outside.. okay, break is over... I'm taking the Christmas lights off my MG vine supports as the sun is warming the cord up nicely! Such a nice warm weather break we're having... sure feel for everyone down south, guess at least I'm used to cold weather, so any day over 50 is like summer. Have a great day, everyone!
Pegi, d-mail me your addy so I can mail you some egg tree seed ok?
Karen, I feel your pain. I lost eight pounds in four days with that stomach flu. I also gained it all back. :) It did take a week or better to get any kind of appetite back. Ugh. I do pray you are on the upside of it now.
I'm with Karen, I can't wait to get my brugs in the ground either. I just want my space back. All the cuttings that took off and take up so much space. They are worth it though. I'd do it all again. All but three of the smallest brugs now reside in the workshop when it's cold or outside when it's nice like now. I need to go water everyone.
Oh Aunt B, you are so lucky, mine died before they even had roots. All mushy and so did the ones the lady that gave me my big brug cut.
Please post , or show me where to see a Buddah! Sounds great.
I am going to look thru my seed catalogs today and hopefully I can get my order in. I am late but hopefully I can catch up.
Time to get productive. :) Hugs to all. JB
P>S>
Aunt B. Where can I find the recipe????What is it used for? Forgive me if you all know this, but I have not read all the posts.
Hi! Everybody! Guess what! It's about to! I have two little buds on one I got in the fall! Just slipped up on me! Yipee!
Thank you Happgarden, better get my grow light and timer ready.
Doe41 I know how excited you got when you saw the buds. I think I had a smile on my face all day. LOL
Yeah, Audrey has a bud. Sounds like we are all getting something "about to".
Post pictures when you can.
LK
Hey all.. so glad everyone is doing okay.. hooray for ya'all thats "about to" sorry those of you that has been sick had to go thru that.. hug yer brugs today..
I just remembered something about germinating brug seeds. If I had all my brain working at once, I'd be dangerous. I soaked my brug seeds for several hours and then VERY carefully peeled off the outer cork shell. I don't know if you all did that or not. I know I told Cody about it.
It's so exciting to find brug buds. I remember my first. I could hardly contain myself. Congrats Audrey.
Is there a specific place to purchases brug seeds. I would like to try and raise them from the beginning. Another challenge in my life to keep me going. LOl. Thanks, JB
JB,i have ordered from Seedman.com.
Hi everyone, I am sorry can't post picture of Buddah Belly cause camera's battery won't charge anymore.
Daves has some pictures but honestly LOL mine is prettier or more unique. I have several stalks coming out of the belly not just one and big leaves. I read some where that if you make a scratch on the belly it will grow a stalk. Haven't tried it.
JB so sorry your weather is so bad. We have been lucky (maybe) and been really warm. I worry about the plants jumping out too early and getting zapped.
Went to the flower lawn and garden show. $53.00 later....oh my! I have tons of caladium bulbs, dahlias, lilies, peonies, book on starting worm farm for the castings, fertilizer for the iris (need to get that out), and a giant ee I am giving away for a house warming present. I am ready for spring now...too bad it is only February....
Bonnie, will save some seeds for you. Need to figure out what I did with everything. I know I have a bag of about 10 at least. Has anyone eve tried to put seeds in a spice rack? Would that work?
Joyce... ? spice rack? you mean for storage? what? more info, please.. and the worm farm sound VERY interesting.. how exciting :) Thx on buddah, hey we taking in Arnolds sometime this Spring?? I promise NOT to put things in your cart (without consulting you first).. :) But I've decided it will be a logical $$ splurge and I want to take you to Osage this year.. that's my favorite one, well, I have 2 or 3 favs in driving distance..I think $53 is a fine amount to spend... I think you did good!.. I like caladiums, too..I store a few corms or bulbs over winter... I buried a canna root in a pot of dirt and set it in the window the other day... I love blooms but I like foliage plants too.. you know how it is....lol Hey, I need to get back to cleaning out the garage.. (whoopee).. haha Jeanne, I soak up to 48 hours before I peel the cork off... I'm "nicking" some of the seed with nail clippers..., maybe I'm killing it? But still no green on any of the brug cups.. I think I covered some too heavily... DEBRA! Hi Lady! I promised to hug my brugs today.. Cody, what a pretty camellia bloom! I think there is some interest on DG for getting a camellia forum started.. over on Dave's Garden Forum... JB, here's a couple links...
Link to Ken's Recipe (my DG search didn't find the one Karen posted in our old threads... only came up threads after She's about to#28)... ? So I found the original thread Kenboy started on the Brugmansia Forum..
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/803019/
Link to Buddah Belly Plant
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2445/
I've started yet another project... (2 days of warm weather and now the garage has delayed its progress)... here's what I've got going so far on my HBA gazing ball... with gems and marbles from the great "HBA" marble caper last summer... This is the top.. I have a brug bloom on one side.. I had/have a plan, and it keeps changing as I'm creating...so I just go with it..
I got so caught up on the link to Buddah Belly, now I know what to expect. I love the plant, can't wait to have some of my own.
Bonnie you are going to have a beautiful BB, be sure to keep posting pictures. And RoseGirl I love you plants.
Sun was out and I was hoping to go out and survey what plants I have, but rain has come back so won't be going out for a while. Weeds are growing so well though.
Thanks Pegi.
TheRoseGirl that is a beautiful bloom. I will have to look up that plant.
I am sooo unorganized I thought maybe if I bought a spice rack with jars (but without spices) and labeled the jars then I could store seeds in the jars. Then all the seeds would be all together with names. Do you think that would work?
AuntB we sure need to go shopping again! I had a great time. Would love to go to your favorite places. You can put anything in my cart ya wanna...LOL we like all the same plants it seems to me.
Last year when I went to the flower and lawn show I didn't buy right away and then when I went back to buy almost everything was gone so this year I bought first and then walked around. They had lots of cannas with really good prices, but I can usually over winter those ok. Dahlias I can't seem to winter over at all. I sure could of spent more, but.....I didn't have anymore...LOL
Has anyone in the Kansas area been to the Wichita garden show? I heard it is really good.
Getting late better get to bed.
Thanks Happgarden.
Happgarden the spice rack does sound like a good idea. I've been saving med bottles to use for this purpose, but they come in all size and shapes. I've had some seeds around for years, forgetting where I put them. Now doesn't that sound like I'm organized, NOT If I take something and put it in a better spot I forget where the better spot is. Keeping all gardening supplies is a major problem for me, but working on it.
My Desperate Housewives is coming on so better watch that, take a shower and get to bed.
