Let's see your ARBORS and TRELLISES !

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Forget shipping costs, JD. You'll have to build them on site and people will have to provide you with room and board in addition to your fee. After you've achieved celebrity status, you can make ludicrous demands -- large bowls of M&M's at your elbow at all times, for example, but with all of the yellow ones removed by hand.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

LOL !!!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

But just think....afterwards those same folks will then charge admission to the JD installation and picking out all those yellow M&M's will be but a fond and distant memory.

(PS: are the yellow ones the good ones or not?)

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I just thought of another demand. Some friends and I were talking years ago about what we'd do if we came into stacks of money. Most of us had conventional dreams of huge mansions, personal chefs, world travel, etc. One of the artists in our group thought we were all hopelessly boring and unimaginative. He said he would hire an orchestra to follow him everywhere he went, playing music appropriate to his mood and underscoring each of his actions and gestures. You could ask for that.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I think the yellow ones taste just like the others, but I read an article once about the ridiculous demands celebrities make, and that was one of them. I can't even remember who demanded it, but the M&M mix had to exclude one particular color. It was just a power trip with no logical basis.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

FYI, Van Halen's infamous 1982 tour, the band demanded that 'no brown M&Ms' be found anywhere backstage.

I also found out why in a Google search: "Strange as it all seems, Van Halen actually had sound reasons for such nutty stipulations. In their view, if they walked into their dressing rooms and found brown M&Ms, then the concert promoter might have missed some more important requests, such as lighting, rigging, ticketing, etc. With their no-brown-M&M's rule, Van Halen were assured that promoters would be forced to read the tour rider thoroughly.

Of course, pity the poor guy who had to go through bags full of M&Ms and remove only the brown ones. And you thought your job sucked."

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I think that was Michael Jackson.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

nope...Sue's right.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

What was Michael Jackson? Removing the brown? You're a scream, JD.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, we cross-posted. I thought you were responding to Sue's post.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Google is my friend!
But I wouldn't be surprised at any odd requests by Michael Jackson.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL, at first I thought so too Zuzu but then I looked at our time post.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks ZuZu --I figured I'd just totally missed something the entire world knows.. comes from keeping your head down in the garden too much!

I will have to think about that demand thing..... first pass -- I'd just want something simple -- like a clean bathroom to use --no sharing --- but if given free reign.....who the heck knows what kind of crazy I'd turn into. ... It might be nice to have everyone who said something totally stupid ...slap themselves at my command. I think I'd better stay 'unfamous'
I'm nicer than that!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I thought he was really clever with that response.

I heard Joan Rivers once say she makes ridiculous demands because she was treated so badly by club owners in the beginning of her career.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Now that I think of it, MJ did request something having to do with m and m's...

yes, I was referring to Sue's post ! But MJ did manage to eliminate brown in other areas !

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

and I wasn't intentionally being funny...but now that you read it that way, it's pretty good !

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I'd love to have the power to make people slap themselves after they say something stupid. One thing I've always dreamed of, though, is the power to put cars out of commission if they're being driven by idiots. I wouldn't want anyone else to be endangered, but if the driver who plays rap music so loudly that the entire street shakes, or the driver who yells at people at intersections, etc., could just have his car break down as soon as he's out of traffic and could have the car never run again, regardless of how many futile repairs he has to finance, I'd be really happy.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I was giving credit to your quick wit and total genius, JD.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Zu saw the humor in that before it ever dawned on me !

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Quoting:
MJ did manage to eliminate brown in other areas

Now that's funny!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

That's what I thought JD meant the first time.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL, now reading back Zu, I saw where you wrote he was a scream! Funny what one can miss!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey Mike,

Do you need a garden to experiment with the poles??? Huh, did you say yes? You know that my garden is always open to new experiments and ideas and I have just the spot for them too....lol

Since I'm only a few miles from you....and there is a NEW Home Depot 1/2 mile from my house, it would be an easy experiment right? How about this....you build it and I'll paint it?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Hey, no cuts in line!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

SoCal...now don't be so hasty... I think that Jasper may believe that the true test of any new garden installation is how it will withstand non-native conditions... especially if it may be shipped all over the country... So perhaps a test site on the other side of the country would be in order... Perhaps a state sort of in the middle along the east coast.... An area between the mountains and the sea... sort of mixed environment... especially if near a Home Depot AND a Lowes.... also with Niche Gardens and Plants Delight Nurseries close enough to inspire.... and maybe even the entire NC State landscape design class who may want to lend some muscle to erect those big babies......... And if that is the case.... I am prepared to make the extreme sacrifice....in the interests of art and science and the garden.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Ok girls, didn't mean to take cuts, really, just thought that since he lived so close, he could use his time wisely, building it between his jobs. lol
See, he could experiment here, then take you all up on your hospitality and already know how to build it and it wouldn't take him so long. He then could use his extra time with you and visit all the lovely nurseries in your area. lolololol

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ok, if you put it that way ^_^ By the time he's done with yours, he should have all the kinks worked out and be able to whip ours out in a flash.

Ahem...'scuse me - just found this thread. Going back up to near the top: Zuzu, do you feed your Lady Banks roses? They are beautiful. My yellow is a pretty good size, but the white (2nd year) is kinda spindly and I wondered if I should give it a little boost. Or perhaps the alfalfa tea SoCal gave me the recipe for would do?

Love all the structures and neat stuff you all have posted - great thread, JD.

Kathleen

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi, Kathleen. I don't feed the Banksias at all, but I don't feed anything in my garden, except for one banana peel at the bottom of the planting hole for each new rose. My soil is really good, so I'm just relaxing and enjoying it.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Interesting. I don't feed anything except a few plumeria and cactus orchids, as we plant mostly natives. We DON"T have great soil though - quite a bit of DG and clay. Perhaps the new Lady Banks just needs time and a little bit of tea. :-)

Thanks, Zuzu.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I seldom feed any plants. It's enough to make dinner!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

LOL! Me, too!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

KC : I had a white lady banks and it never did a thing. My sister had one and it was pretty much the same story...no clue why. If you want an easy to grow, trouble free white cl. rose, try Cl. Whie Iceberg.

It will pretty much bloom for 10 months at a time and is really disease resistant.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, those white icebergs are lovely. I'll see how this one does. It does have a lovely scent; we had a few blooms last year. DH would sure like to have something that blooms longer, that's for sure. He likes the yellow LB, but once it's done, it's done. Ditto with the clematis and the English roses we just planted. I can sure pick 'em! LOL

In his infinite mercy, JasperDale has shown compassion for the people having trouble loading such a long thread with so many photos and has asked me to create a second thread. You can find it here:
