Those are good uses for discarded store racks, etc. I do that a lot. They're going to get covered up eventually, so why not use them ?
Let's see your ARBORS and TRELLISES !
Nice work, Holly.
I agree about the discarded store racks and would love to have some. I doubt my son wants to take them apart to bring me a few of them.
Long ago we took a cardboard display and made a puppet theatre for my granddaughter.
Here it is not very attractive, a little paint will make it look much better but it didn't take long for the plants to cover it up. It looked very nice with a small table and a couple of lounge chairs in front of it. I love it for Annual Vines, it can be easily moved to a new location every year. If you happen to find one make sure to anchor it down so it can't blow over.
That's great advice. Some rebar would really hold it in place.
Here are a couple more small ones. I saw this metal headboard listed for free in the paper and sent Ric after it. When I saw it I knew it wasn't what I wanted and never planted it. But I knew that someone would, it's going over to my DIL for next summer. It would make a nice movable trellis for annual vines, too. That little black metal trellis on the side of my potting shed is just right for me.
Hi JD! What a great idea for a thread. I just discovered it, so I'll have to go back through slowly and soak each one in. The photos I had time to study are just gorgeous. Your gardens are perfect, JD! More comments once I've taken my time to drool sufficiently over each.
Louise
HollyAnn, I like the massive look of both your trumpet vine and your hidden garden Yew entrance. Your blue MG is a very nice blue.
AnjL, what a nice arch from hubby!
This old thing is another of my favorites. Certainly nothing fancy. There was an old fence post that was never removed. Ric scabbed an old board onto it and mounted a Birdhouse he made and I painted. I had a broken piece of lattice fence that we bolted on the bottom. I liked the old weathered gray and didn't bother to paint or stain it. Doesn't look like much, but it is down in the back yard near the barn.
This Wisteria has outgrown it's original support and this Spring Project is a large arbor that will be placed over the driveway and hopefully we will be able to encourage the Wisteria to grow back onto it, don't think that will be a problem as it already is taking up part of the driveway. We are also planning to remove the stone and replace it with bricks, but that is lower on the to-do list.
Venu209, That is a beautiful pic. Plenty of winter interest there. I heard you had snow in your area today. We aren't getting any yet. What are you planting on your trellis? Do you have a summer pic to show us, too? You are right that trellis, unlike my fence is "very sturdy".
I have 3 White Dawn and 2 America climbing Roses on the fence. There are a few Purple Clematis planted with them not sure which ones as I misplaced my markers. I should be able to ID them next summer. The Roses purchased from a DG Co-op in 2007.

I don't have a summer picture. The arbor has Eden on one side and Aloha on the other. The large one on the right is Eden. Very vigorous grower and not prone to disease. I have America also. Aren't her blooms beautiful? I may have gotten that one through the same co-op last year as you did.
I'll bet the rose and clematis combo will be stunning as it matures!
This is Eden's bloom
Ooops, cross posted. I can tell you love America's bloom also!
Window boxes, We bought several of these very inexpensive metal trellises. we used 4 of them with the 2 window boxes on the front of the house. Ric hung them just like you would a shutter. He has small spacers behind them to give the vines a little room to twine around. Some time later on we are planing to add a few bits of stain glass to make them a little more decorative when they aren't covered by vines. We planted Caladiums, Bacopa and MG's in these.
Holly, what a wealth of pictures! I love all of the arbors and the morning glories. The secret garden plan is great, and I agree that the fence has character, not to mention some cute stuff growing in it.
Yes, AnjL, you can plant a clematis right in the same pot with the rose. It should be very happy there.
I'll be back to catch up with all the photos but here's an interesting link to a newly bumped thread - all about making arbors from cow fencing: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/684265/:
I remember looking at the Aloha, I really liked that one, too. I have not had the best luck with Roses in the past something was always happening to them. You know my son mowed them, the goats ate them, I just didn't take the time to properly care for them. I thought if I could keep these alive and looking good I could expand my collection. So far so good. I have Creeping Phlox planted under my fence and it makes a nice display in the Spring. I know I have a nice pic of it but couldn't find it.
Here is another pic of my window box trellises. The raised Rock Wall beds were a big project for us last summer. If any of you are interested this thread will show you the project start to finish.

HollyAnn - what wonderful photos! I love the morning glories, the post with the bird house, the split rail fence (keep it), the shutter effect with the trellises and the window boxes. They're all wonderful.
Louise - love your rose and the look of your arbor with snow - that entire setting is so beautiful.
Hope I haven't over done the 2 penny tour of my gardens. This is the last feature. My Lamppost Bed, this project has taken 2 years from planing to completion. I rolled the design idea around in my head for awhile and then fall of 07 we got the RR Ties in the ground and Spring of 08 we finished it up. There are 3 trellises, they are a different pattern but the same type as used at the windows. Ric added a touch of stained glass and wooden frames to them to make them taller and stronger. There are different clematis planted at each trellis. The Lamppost is also a trellis and my first clematis The President is planted there.
Lovely, HollyAnn. Please feel free to keep on posting as you find photos. We're all enjoying the plants and the trellises. Pass along compliments to your DH.
That's a lovely effect that the stained glass lends to the clematis!
Not overdone at all. Keep those photos and comments coming, please.
Wait, mine might be city lights. I hate it when tags get moved....
or I didn't tag properly to begin with.
Holly: GREAT Pics and Great Ideas. BRAVO !
All these photo's everyone is posting are really inspiring and giving me lots of ideas.
You'd be surprised at the gauge steel used in a lot of these discarded store items. A lot of this stuff is better grade steel than things sold at nurseries.
Venu209, That is a very pretty Clematis. Very well could be me. I have the tag that came with mine and the plant matches the pic on the tag but I don't really know. Wish I had a few more pics. This is what it looks like when the outer petals drop. Wish I had a shot between the first opening and the petal drop.
This is the end of the tour. Glad you all enjoyed it. If you are interested in seeing the before pics and the whole project from start to finish. This link will take you to a Thread documenting it. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/839411/
I would really like a White Clematis to plant on the other side of the lamppost with The President. I'll be checking out the Languinosa Candida and checking bloom dates to see if that would work. I'd really like a late summer/fall blooming date. I'd appreciate any suggestions on that and anything else you may have ideas on.
