getting longer to access...
Thought I'd move us over to enjoy another friendship thread....
Come sit by the fire, a comfortable chair awaits you...look forward to hearing about your Best/Worse and do tell us what you did learn today...
Best/ Worse/ ? did you learn today #81visit with friends...
Made it over.....hope you aren't over doing it...Rest up and take care.......we were at 19 degrees last night....may get a touch of snow tomorrow but nothing serious, so they say.
Thanks for leaving the trail--found you. In the low 70's today and tomorrow and then a change. Isn't that the way it always is?
It's 32* now, and holding! Gonna get bad in about 3 hrs.
OHHHHH it's in the -20's here...although not snowing here at the office I understand a blizzard is brewing at home..won't matter I won't be shovelling..Marion, 70's now mom thought it was cold down there..was tempted to go March Break until she mentioned the 'cold'..lol...big difference though between our cold and your cold...
Went to the Mall for lunch, wasn't ready to eat real food, so back on soup and hot drinks...Cindy and LeeAnn left for home while we were gone to lunch, with Paul ill they had to pick up their mom from the hospital..anyway, omg what sales are on..if I were feeling better I'd be shopping tonight on my way home for new coat/boots and a few outfits, but NOT..maybe Thursday if I'm feeling better...
Did not realize they had a 'Quilt Shop' in that mall..I could not believe the quilts, know they are machine quilted but darn, you can't even purchase yardage for what they are selling their quilts...
I think I might pick one up for my bed (comes with shams)...BUT Suzanne so wanted a Christmas quilt - queen size that was in the Toronto store, hinted to her kids but they had already purchased her gift..well her birthday is Saturday and I did make her the rag quilt but can't resist getting her the Christmas quilt as well...it was a steal at $129.99 imagine it's on for $49.99 now at your USA $$$ that probably less than $40.00 ... the country quilt I'm interested in is $69.99 whith shams...they even have a country cabin quilt for $39.99 which would look lovely hanging from a quilt wall hanging unit I purchased guess where, in Texas years ago..a person could go crazy there...also they had Christmas throws, think I paid around $35 or $40. for when I bought 3 as gifts at Christmas..they are now $14.98..think I'll pick up 2 and put them aside for this Christmas...better leave my bank card at home and only go with cash for my and Suzanne's quilts..lol
what you think?
Betty you can never have enough quilts.
Remember the cabinet I got to keep them covered? Mine are all hand made, but still, quilts are quilts. I have the log cabin quilt somewhere here, will have to find it to show you. It's in fall colors and lovely.
Stay warm, we have an ice storm coming. I have been baking all day, in case we have no electricity. Cats and I have to eat!!!
I am glad you are feeling better, that's the best. Haven't had a worst today, we'll wait and see if I become encased in ice then we'll know.
And darn it, still waiting to learn something. Did learn it's impossible to shop in Texas when you are in KY. That's not so good, though.
Trisha, I was just about to tell Betty about the UM church when I read your post. We have belonged to one of their small rural churches for 4 yrs and they are the best at helping out. About 3 months ago there was a couple from Plano that came to service because they have relation here. My prayers for Jesse and all. If I can help in anyway let me know. HUGS BEV
Thanks Bev, between the Church and the United Way, if she will call them, they are in a position to accurately check out her situation in person and get the help she needs. Betty is conveying this info to Jesse tonight so I think we have done the best we can except to offer prayers that she gets the help she needs, what ever it may be.
As soon as I walked through the door I contacted Jesse and gave her the 2 contacts you provided as well as relayed she does have value here on earth, that prayers are being said and soft hugs given by all...
I will call her tomorrow night as per our conversation to see if she was able to get any help, at least a ride to the bureau that she has to apply for medical aide insurance...
She said to say 'hi' and a thank you...
Shar...I'm just envious of you having all those quilts...you must feel so warm inside knowing that you are the keeper of these treasures..alternative for me is go shopping at 'the quilt shop'..do you have one of the chain stores in your area or are they only in Canada...I must bring my camera with me when I go shopping, hopefully Thursday evening and take photo's of them all displayed, must be at least 30 of them..all traditional quilts, flaming star, dresdon plate, log cabin etc. even the material they are made with are patterns of aged fabric...so very interesting?
I thought that as garage sale time and auctions will soon start, aren't I just a kidder, not for 3 or 4 months at least I'll start being on the lookout for what quilts might be on the market..
Audrey, Shar and the rest of you who are expecting bad weather, stay safe...hope no one goes without food or electricity...
I must drive in each day for the rest of the week as Suzanne has appointments during the day/evening so I'll get up early, ride in while leisurely thanking for Lord for all that is in my life..good time to meditate...
An earthly angel visited today, dishes in dishwasher put away, meal in the refrigerator, back entrance way shovelled...I would have said Kyle but for the meal so my guess is Cathy dropped in..must telephone her and say thanks..on Friday when she saw my car was here she dropped in, I called out from the bedroom and told her I'd not ask her in for a visit worried she'd catch what I had, she went next door and got me icecream to treat me..would imagine it was her, so off to call and say thanks..talk later
Going for a hot bath put my nightie on..don't want to fall asleep too early this evening as I'll be up half the night..
No Betty, we don't have a quilt store here, only some really good fabric stores, which GG will get to see if she and her mom come here for the quilt show in April.
Glad you are feeling a little better, just take it easy.
Betty, usually in bigger towns, they have a hotel liquidators....they sometimes sell new or slightly used mattresses. It is a start! I got my two girls mattresses there, complete set, new in packaging....for 60 a set. This was years ago....but I know i have seen commercials. I will do some research of her area.
Get some rest, feel better soon!
Debbie
Audrey, good luck! Hopefully it won’t be as bad as they’re saying. You’re in my prayers.
Betty I am so glad you got ahold to Jesse, although I'm very sorry for her situation, was in the same in my early 20's, very sick with double pneumonia, no heat, no furniture, had a car but couldn't afford the gas, completely broke, etc. so I know what she's going through. I'm joining in the prayers to get her the help she needs.
Betty I'm glad you have some of your strength back, just take it easy.
Ice storm expected, not as bad here in Central Arkansas as it is just north of I-40, they're saying "major ice storm," up there, we're supposed to get 1/4" of ice over the next 24 to 48 hours here in Central AR. Dave's staying home tonight because of it. He'll probably be home tomorrow night too, but so will most of the other employees. I went out and talked to all of my trees today, they said they're going to do their best on staying upright in the ground and not breaking branches.
Oh, Best of today, not working because of a dentist appt.
Worst of today, hearing that Jesse is having such a hard time.
Betty probably IKEA WOULD BE THE CHEAPEST AND AROUND IN MOST US STATES, but thrift stores and churches too may donate, a futon would be nice and cheap too and would double as a sofa too.
That is so sad. That cold will kill a person, how alone must she feel? glad you feel a little more human.
If there is a Salvation Army nearby....they should donate blankets and supplies you would think...or sell at very reasonable price.
I wish we had a DG'er out in that area that could help...at least give her rides.
Debbie

Debbie one of the organizations we recommended to her is the United Methodist Church, and the other is the United Way and they will provide transportation to get her to the places she needs to go to get back on her feet. They are set up to evaluate her situation and get her set up with the different agencies regarding food an meds, and will know the best places to get her household goods at free or reduced costs.
Kim have a safe and wonderful trip!!! Give Stacey and everyone a big hug from all of us!!
Hello All; My first mattress I bought at a Rental Store for next to nothing. We just replaced it recently with a purchased Mattress...it lasted a long long time. I know we have thrown away a few mattresses in the last few years and there seem to be many out at the garbage a lot around the neighborhood. It seems a waste when they are probably perfectly fine and could be used by someone. I am new and do not know the situation of this person....is she elderly? I don't know where Plano Texas is. But I cried when I heard of her plight. I would like to help. They also sell cheap mattresses at "Big Lots". That is a store where stuff that didn't sell regularly goes to sell at a deeply discounted price. Does she have an address? I suppose it's something that would be dangerous to post. But I would send a blanket or something to her (or a "middleman" if the address is not a good idea)....if possible. My Grandma "quilted". Every Christmas all of the grandkids would have a giant Trashbag under the tree with our Quilt for the year. I have inherited many of them...and they are all so so special to me ....especially the ones where I can locate a small piece of an old dress of mine as a little girl. (I am 43). When Katrina hit....we had a house we had just signed a purchase agreement on ...and were able to keep 8 evacuee's there for several weeks. We didn't know all of them...and were dismayed when a few who we didn't know as well...left with a blanket of mine. But I was okay with that ultimately...because they didn't take Grandma's quilts...they took a relatively new thermal blanket that my sister had given me for Christmas one year. I suppose that is preferable to the alternative. Betty - I will help ....tell me how. I am so glad you have people who love and support you and I hope I earn the right to have the same. :) Love the "Enough" poetry... Please stay warm all.... I'm sending some Louisiana Sunshine your way :) --- Mary
We have given Jesse the name and number for a couple of places in the Plano area that should be able to help her get to the places she needs to visit in order to get her meds, they are also in a position to help her get the furnishings and other things she needs at little or no cost...being right there in her city they can check into her situation and will know what she needs an d the best way go about getting the help she needs to get back on her feet.
Betty, hope you are resting well and feeling better in the morning;
Trisha, I'm swallowing hard thinking about Jessie. Betty glad you are feeling some better. Me, I'm trying to quit smoking. Still taking my Chantix. It has taken away the nicotine craving, but the habbit of reaching for one with a cup of coffee is hard to get over. I've never been a gum chewer but I have to tell y'all I'd rack on your nerves with all this gum clicking I'm doing.
Hugs and I'm headed to bed
Deborah
Hang in there Deborah, I won't tell you how many pencils and chopsticks and things I chewed up when I was quitting...I
If Jesse will just call the laces we gave her the information for they will be able to help her....
I will keep you both in my prayers tonight........have a good night Deborah, sleep well.
So sorry to hear about jesse-glad you have some phone #ers for her. The Salvation Army also helps with things like your electric bills and such, so if she has one nearby...there may also be some type of a volunteer system for those that need transportation help...the churches may be able to help with that too..
KIM IS COMING TODAY!!!YEAH!!! In just a few short hours!!
Here I am at the office, boss just e-mailed to say he wouldn't be in, still ill so I e-mailed back and said yes, please stay home as we're ALL working ill, each passing it on to each other...hope he gets the message that not only he is sick..lol..men, it's all about them at least for some, not right to paint the entire male race with one brush..my apology...but in this case it's well earned..
-11 when I left the house..was in bed shortly after I arrived home last night, stayed in bed till I absolutely had to get up because of time so sure doesn't leave much open for social life...not that I have one..lol
Been trying to call the clinic that my doctor participates in..if you call 9am sharp likely you'll get an evening appt. I've been trying since 8:55 using redial, line busy/busy so that's not helping me any...but I'll keep trying..
Thought I'd go back and read the weekend posts now that I'm up to it...
Gillian..could be easier for y ou being so far north to follow the program you are on i.e. materialitic cut-backs and with the children being younger..not so sure my kids could try it with their children when it's what todays world is all about..I have to respect your way of raising your children..as you say it comes from being well informed and of course how you yourself was raised...let us know the steps you are taking to do so and how you are progressing...Bosch mixer..funny Suzanne was talking about her DH, she's wanted one for so long, every birthday/christmas she asks for same and he continues to purchase all the gadgets on the market that he thinks will cover her needs..she's a cupboard full and all she wanted was the Bosch..told her she best go purchase one for herself...
An Marie, aren't you luckie sweeite that you are close to your son and can visit often..bet you encouraged him and did some ohhhs/ahhhs at his new found muscles...so cute..did you have a camera?
Jeannine, was out shopping just after christmas and there was the cutest figurines that looked exactly like Sailor and Murphy...adorable..forgot I had bought them for you as a gift, must put them in a box this weekend and get them mailed to you...
Now look at those pups, omg how do you tell one from the other, must be difficult..your DH looks at ease with those pups..think he enjoys having them around every bit as much as you...now where do they sleep, surely not on your bed..lol.. OMG Jeannine, is that green plants you have peeking out of the ground next to where DH is sitting? Are the children still planning class trips away from home? Kyle is fundraising for his Ottawa trip..quite fascinated in how they are doing it..they have obtained minimum value of $50.00 gift items or vouchers for the entire month of February..each day a ticket it picked..but the interesting part is each $5.00 ticket sold by him goes into his particular Ottawa Bank Account...now he was saying that each family were asked to pay $50.00 insurance premium that if the public school teachers go on strike as is possible, they will not lose their money it will be given to them at the end of the year...
Back to do more reading...
Mary, how you must treasure your quilts as well, you'll have to take photo's and show us some of them..my grandmother made quilts and gave them as gifts however my boys were not born when she had to give up quilting..now I did have her last quilt, was made from suit material, omg it weighs a ton somehow my youngest son has it..said I let him have it one day when the boys needed to be covered on a trip north and as it's on his bed and he values its worth and someone would eventually get it, well, it's his ...
I keep looking at the photo with Shar's cupboard filled to the brim with quilts..can you imagine the manhours, the love that went into those quilts...Shar are they all heirloom passed down to you from your mom and your Aunt or did you start collecting them as a young bride?
Mary and Shar, do you know the names of the quilt designs on them? would be interesting...I watched a show not long ago, was to do with the underground railway and slavery, how quilts were made to give specific messages when on the line...wouldn't mind purchasing that book if I could find out the name of it? anyone know???? Think they have quilt designs within as well for viewing..
This morning on my way in I bought a Country Sampler magazine that has 5 dreamy home tours, primitive, colonial and french country and cottage design..so many pretty quilts displayed..I particularly like quilts that are used as table cloths..says there is many country - stretch your decorating dollars designs within so it's a must read today..I surely must be an old soul returned to life because I so love anything old...
Kim welcome, lol...yes are Judy is a spitball isn't she, so much energy, hard to keep up with her...maybe one day you'll meet her sidekick Liz, now there is a handfull when those 2 get together...lol...I so enjoyed my Chicago trip with both.. I was in a swap not long ago, got confused with who my swap bud was, did think it was you Kim so guess what I have sitting there, yep, a pink flamingo..lol Have fun with Stacey Kim, I've enjoyed meeting her and her mom Janice last fall..planning a craft weekend some time in the near future as well and who knows maybe even travelling to Texas...lol... she's also a bubble of joy..
Deborah, no easy thing to quit smoking..as they say one day at a time right..were you a heavy smoker? have you quit because this time you want to quit...from what I hear the only quit smoking successes have been the ones who decided THEY no longer wanted to smoke not those who have been pressured into it... how are your projects going? they should keep you busy..lol Judy seems to be doing well in the not smoking department...keep asking our Liz how she's doing as she was to have stopped just after Christmas..think she reads right over that question when she posts...lol..have to get at her...you keep chewing that gum..DH must be proud of you wanting to quit...prayers coming your way..
Mary, thanks for the offer re Jesse...I'll give her a call tonight and see if she's contacted the church and the United Way and if help is on it's way..
we can then go from there...it's not I don't think that she has the ability to research this out or think of the possibilities as many of you have posted I just think it has been so overwhelming, almost a 'me against the world' that she's no more will to live and is slowly just letting go..don't know..but let's hope with prayers she'll regain some of her fight..I could call her 3 often and would but I'm sure the telephone system she's using doesn't have that many minutes and really should be there for emergency purposes so my calling however grand it is for her to know someone and many care it could create yet another problem..
Liz, I absolutely loved the photo of the bottle cap pendant...you should sell them on e-bay, might make more than at a craft show...so pretty..you've the patience of a saint girl? any more finished you could show us? I always get so many compliments when I wear the spoon pendant which I do wear often...don't think there is much to opening an account on e-bay and selling is there...think a few girls on DG do sell their wares...
Dawn, Shar suggested a futon as well, I thought with back problems it might not help but Shar said she slept on one and it was fine...I'm waiting until my call tonight to decide what I or some of us could do to help...how are things going...any news on the interview?
Betty, that sounds like the type of quilt I want; heavy, warm, big enough to cover the bed, thinish. One day I'll get around to making it; need to find the old style heavy batting though. My brother has one my great aunt made, in my opinion the colors are horrible, but we still fought over it because we both love the weight and warmth of it.
Betty, spoon pendent?
I think I'm an old soul too; or is it just that I respect quality and so much stuff that is made today is *#@$.
Laura don't know I'd use the old batting though..some of the newer batting you purchase by the yard would be more effictive..her blanket consisted of men's heavy coats, pants, woman's jackets..will ask Jeff to take a photo so I can show you all..again nothing to look at, back then you used what you could, what was cheapest, you certainly didn't go out and purchase all new yardage..I know of a square in one of the quilts I have that there are some blocks made from a cotton dress she always wore..almost forgot about that tattered old quilt..must go in search of it..
Deborah, I had the same problem when I tried to quit last time, though mine is breaking coping mechanisms. I know it sounds weird, but have you considered trying lollypops; especially dumb dumbs (the little ones)? I found they took away some of the urge to have something in my mouth/hand and the dumb dumbs lasted about as long as a cigarette if I didn’t bite them.
The new batting I've seen is just so light, it's the weight as much as anything that I like.
Laura, Liz makes beautiful pendants...the actual cupped spoon is filled with differents art material, mine looked like a beach with shells and filled with a laquer of sorts, handle right at the cupped part was bent so that a necklace could be inserted...
I will go in search of her bottle cap pendent ... you wouldn't mind if I shared would you Liz?
I would love to see some of these.
That is very cool! I would think she'd be able to sell them.
Betty, the quilts that I have are all made by my mother and my grandmothers. Sometime when I am going through them, I will list their names and let you know. I also have a couple of crazy quilts, which were done with scraps and have embroidered scenes on them. One is velvet and lovely, well actually two are, and the other is wool scraps.
Ice has blanketed us this morning, about a half inch covering the trees and limbs. I have limbs down everywhere, but my trees are still standing, I just don't know for how long since another storm is on its way. Scary. I hope Audrey is OK, too.
Electricity has been off and on all night...but...I have lots of quilts, don't I?
Hi all - having some winter weather here today. Unfortunately, it's just sleet and then supposed to turn to all rain. You all know how much I want snow so again, disappointed with the outcome. :(
Betty, the figurines sound so cute. You are such a sweetie to think of them and me!! I can't wait to see them. Can I send you postage as I know that's not cheap?
The dogs: We have renamed them the "HOGs" - Herd of Goldens". It's like a herd when they meet you at the door. I love how excited they are and all the kisses they want to give (unless they have just feasted on poo!). We have just the 3 as Mango went back home with her momma. I can tell Hula and Sailor apart with no problem. DH needed to keep Hula's collar on for a day to tell the difference. MEN! Hula is a lighter color then Sailor and also dare I say....prettier. She has a classic golden retriever head and stands so beautifully. She will make a great show dog - unless we ruin her before that!
Both Sailor and Hula have crates they stay in at night and during the day when we aren't home. Murphy sleeps on our bed until he gets hot then jumps to the floor to sleep between the 2 crates. We have a really high bed so we were very surprised when Hula jumped up on it. Sailor, not to be out done by her sister attempted a few times then finally got it. However, she will not jump off which Hula does without thinking.
I have taken all 3 walking and they do ok to start, then they start twisting and going in and out and I look like a maypole halfway around the block. I don't know how those New York City dog walkers do it!!
Well, back to work for now. Will chat later.
Hugs,
Jeannine
Shar you are one lucky lady to have quilts from mom and grandma's...is Ashley into being the keeper of these treasures? the embroidered ones sound special..probably a story within each block..don't you think because money was scarce in those days that they had to be so creative? Any stories behind them left for you?
Ice storm, woke up early this am and listened the the news, showed the USA map and almost right across the midwest to south of N.Y. state was a ribbon of freezing rain...do hope Audrey is ok and you Shar I'm not worried about, not with all those quilts and your getting food ready yesterday..those kitties are sure to snuggle in as well...
I'll have to take my camera with me one day as I'm driving in myself all week...HWY93 shows much tree damage from our ice storm a few months ago..such devastation..am sure the municipalities will have lots of trees to cut up and dispose of..with the economy like it is, they really should be making the wood available to those families who could use it for heating..I know they'd probably say they'd be responsible to some degree if someone was injured..
Jeannine, no postage necessary, will get them boxed up..soooo many things to get posted this weekend..a few swaps I missed out on posting due to being in bed for 2 weekends in a row...I'm sure that new girl that panicks when she sees me on Saturday mornings will really freak when I come in ladden with parcels... Yes you will love the figurines, as soon as I saw them, I thought of you!
If you want snow Jeannine you'll have to come visit me .. I've lots to share...hey, I'll even let you shovel, promise I will..
Jeannine, who is responsible for all the chores that go with having dogs? Do you, because after all you are the one that went for the gusto do them all? I'm so laughing at the thought of you walking all 3 dogs, them wrapping themselves around you...you'd have to be so careful you don't get tangled and fall...
Didn't you build a run last year in the back of your garden where once spring comes they can stay outside? Problem with that is they can be 'yappy' when there are that many...
Sharon has her bags packed even though the Westminster Kennel show isn't for another few weeks..she's excited about her dog being shown..didn't ask if it was she who would show the dog or the trainer..2 years ago it did poorly only because the month before the show we had a heat wave of sorts and poor doggies lost their coat... She's just so excited I do hope she wins in some categories...
Janice/Stacey???? looking at the map..24 hr. drive to Kemp Texas from my house to B.J.'s..couple different routes, if I move the curser slightly we end up in Shar's backyard..have to take a look at whatother DG member might be in line...come on you girls..got to get organized if we're doing this..lol...I have to leave 1 day earlier than you to meet up with you both and of course whoever else will be travelling...I'm antzy, want to travel, yes I do....should book a few more days girls do you know all the places we could see..St.Louis/Nashville (?) Memphis..almost same route I took years ago, OMG do you think we could find the
"Million and 1 Callico print' material store and quilting street...wouldn't that be a treat...with a few of us driving it shouldn't be bad should it? I'm a good driver, Judy and Liz will attest to my driving ability...
I'm just rambling here become the meds I'm taking are making me tired, don't want to fall asleep with clients coming in, so bare with me...
I'm so laughing, have to tell you this..we are a bankruptcy firm right, moved here and I guess the telephone number we were given once belonged to a company that delivers alcohol/beer orders to homes...a lady just called and when I politely said 'good afternoon and how can I help you today, she saw by the voice that I had a bad cold, said she just this morning got out of the hospital, she thought she was having a heart attach but it was pneumonia, she was in pain and the hospital sent her home without pain killers...her order was a case of rye...OMG that surely would do the trick..she wasn't pleased at all that they were no longer in business and how would she because of no transportation be able to pick up a liquor order....don't know, don't care..aren't I bad!
LOL Betty! That's too funny! I couldn't imagine drinking a case of Rye. Yuk. I do like the idea of having alcohol deliveries.
I'm playing hookey because of the ice, it's not bad at all where I'm at but it's supposed to get bad later this afternoon, but they're not sure when. It's raining @ 32* so it won't take much cooling to get ice built up on the roads.
I want to travel too, but with the weather not cooperating I'm not going to be going anywhere this summer, it's using up all of my vacation time that I still haven't built back up since that stupid surgery last summer. GGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I hope Jessie has made the phone calls to get her help also. I'm really worried about her.
