Stir crazy, but there's nothing much in the nurseries yet

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yep, I just went back and checked it, very cool idea!
Knowing me though, i would probably have the cages laying around forever before I got around to painting them.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I like your picture that belongs now were too. Its very tranquil.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I was bad today I went to the garden center and bough 4 fushias aggghhhh. I lost a few last year. Mites I guess. It wouldnt be so bad, but I am so broke this year is supposed to be gardening on a budget. They were trying to talk me into buying the new legend rose. They went on and on and on, about how its the prettiest red rose they ever saw. No I am intrigued.
The thing is my dog loves going there too. I know when he really wants to go he wedges himself in between the two seats and will not come out for food or anything.

Zuzu, can't you do a system restore, and set it for the day before you changed the pictures? You will lose any new programs or files you installed after that date. But the pictures should be back to where they were.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good luck on that Zuzu. I did almost the exact opposite and lost all the pics in my master file. They're copied onto another program but I did want one central file for all. You have my sympathies.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I tried that, Polly, and it didn't work. The situation isn't as bad as it sounds, though. The computer had to give them all different numbers after the Ambassador 1930z, and it assigned the numbers in the previous order of the photos, which was alphabetical.

I've already renamed half of them. I have all of my roses listed on helpmefind.com, so I opened that in one window and the photos in another, and it's been pretty easy to assign the names to the images. When I run into images that look like two or three of the roses I have in that section of the alphabet, I just look them up in my rose forum threads. I usually end up posting every rose picture I take in that forum.

Now I'm just living in fear that I'll do it again, and to the whole 5,000+ this time. I still don't know how I did it the first time, so I can't really guard against it. I'll have to find a second storage site. I had them on Pixamo for a while, but that's gone now.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh, that's good Zuzu.

I've never used any of those programs. i always just use Picasa and save them in files. Picasa always gives the option to save as, so I've never lost any. That would be scary. What a project 5000 pics would be.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

If I took a lot of landscape shots or pictures of my cats, it wouldn't be so daunting, but most of my photos are closeups of one bloom on a rose bush. I have more than a thousand, so you can imagine how many lookalikes there are.

It would be like Pirl having to re-identify all of her daylilies. Of course, she probably would recognize all of them at a glance anyway, clever and efficient girl that she is.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

My hubby bought me an external hard drive last week. I still have to open the box and get it connected to the computer but I plan to copy all my pictures and documents over in case of computer failure. I have some images distributed on 3 different photo sites but I have over 42,000 images, half originals right off the camera and the other half their edited versions. I am gradually working my way through folders and doing some deletes of older so-so shots.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I want to put mine on a site that will show the file names of the photos. When I put them on Pixamo, I had to enter all the names as I did it. Or maybe I was just doing it wrong.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oddly enough I do recall the names and the crosses of the majority of the daylilies and I don't get them confused in Picasa. I doubt it's because of my efficiency (thank you, Zuzu) but more like the fact that thousands of them have been here for many years. Mine do show the names I assigned them, Zuzu, and I can change names if I wish or file the same photo under many different names.

Sue - I remember Victor talking about an external hard disk but my blonde question of the day is, "How do the photos know enough to go there instead of the CPU?". I do hate all the intracacies of computers. Since we had a miserable November and December I did eliminate 1,000 of 19,000+ photos. Now I eliminate more and more as I go through folders.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You have to send them there, as a backup. I still have to read the instructions but it may be that you can set up a schedule to automatically update into the external hard drive or perhaps it's done manually. But it's a good idea, I would be devastated if my computer crashed and I didn't have anything saved elsewhere. It happens all the time to others, it's a hard lesson to learn.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Someone told me they'll always be on your computer even if you can't find them. Duh! If I can't find them I guess I'd have to hire someone who could find them since they'd be of no use to me while hidden.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yes, but if you have a hard drive crash, and it's bad, as in a tech can't even retrieve all your files, then that's it, gone. Anyways, I got a big external drive so I will breath a sigh of relief when I get my documents and images transferred over there.

Off to my Mom's to help move some furniture around.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Do you save them to a CD also? All my pictures are saved on CDs in case of computer crash.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What brand of CD's, Polly? Maybe I got two bad batches but more were bad than good.

I used Memorex and Fuji.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Hubby got me an external hard drive to save everything onto. Problem is, I forget to hook the darned thing to the laptop once a week! I should just pick a day and time to just do it. I think he found this one for just under $100.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I just have a few saved on CD's, for printing but I have over 42,000 images so it's just not feasible for me to burn them all.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

No, 42, 000 would be a little much to burn CDs of.

I use Memorex. CDs hold around 700MB, and DVDs 4500. I reduce my pictures to about 40 KB (I use web resizer). So my DVDs hold about 100 pictures. I separate my pictures into files, and then put them on a CD or DVD. I have had a few bad ones, Pirl, not that many though.

But for those of you with huge picture files, an external drive is certainly best.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm up to 19,000 so it would be a good job for a rainy day.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Reduce them first though, they will take up a lot less room, and that web resizer is really easy. You don't have to reduce the size they actually open to, such as the height and width, but if you reduce the bytes, I find they look no different, take up less room, and that's what web resizer does.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I save both originals and reduced. I've sold a few images and they always wanted originals but I am gradually going through those and dumping many.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh definitely save the origionals. I was talking about putting them on CD or DVD.

I just ran into the same problem doing my website. One of the two wonderful ladies that offered me pictures for my website had to send me a CD with the origional pictures on it, as either her, or my email would not let them go through without reducing them. And it reduced it too much for my website, so I had to put them on a canvas.

What venue do you sell you pictures for Sue? I have noticed they are outstanding.

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

hi every one . that topic of photos reminded me of the horror i suffered last summer my son deleated everything all applications and info from my computer . i lost thousands of pics and about 3000 songs .
any way i got over it .lol

hey our walmart has body bag roses already ! yes i bought 4 , blue girl, pink peace ,gold medal , and josephs coat for mom . actually she made me go back and get it for her. they were in good shape . barely any roots as usual though .

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Ouch, iris28.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Actually, it's from people scrolling through the PF here on Daves, both Kell and I have have been contacted by the same company that makes plant tags. I know Kell has had a few other sales to others as well.

I remember when that happened Dana. Did he also go into the Recycle Bin and permanently delete them?

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

i have a mac . when i logged on to the computer there were no applications nothing to open nothing in finder . i re installed everything . but i think there was a way to reinstall and retrive the info but im not sure and i think if you reinstall the old info is lost . i had to re install the os. luckily i had the startup disks . im notorious for throwing that stuff out

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I bet it's still somewhere on your computer. You would have to go through a few deliberate steps to permanently delete thing. Did you post on the Computer forum? I know there are Mac users that could have made suggestions.

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

that would be awesome ill do that .

Look what happened here an hour ago! That's NOT snow!

Pea size hail, everything is still white, over an hour later. Heaviest hail downpour I have ever seen!

Rain and hail flooded the streets so fast, trying to wash my Jeep away.

Wow Sue ! That's pretty wild !

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Good grief...we had really high winds today, lots of rain, and some flooding, but no hail, thank goodness. I have seen more ice than I ever want to see again. I hope nothing is damaged at your house.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Maybe a few pock marks on succulents, I pulled many under the eaves and covered arbor for the rainy season but many are planted. Will have to inspect them later.
The downpour was so loud, I called my DH at work and held the phone out the door! It was wild!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I hope it's the label company I use Sue, Macore. I'd love to see some of your pics on my labels. How cool would that be?

Have you had any training in photography, Sue? Pirl is my trainer. I'm getting better, but I don't think I'll ever be of her stature.

We have some of the best photographers on DG.
