The wind really picked up tonight. Ground is still frozen and didn't get a chance to melt much... the south side of my yard is almost all shady and it looks like a frozen lake.26 wind chill 17

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My son GF had to get that too JoAnn..I managed with out but it was close. Glad your feeling better, I know I lost a few pounds too. Hard to eat when you can't taste it!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Wish it would last another few months so I could loose 30 pounds and spring fully bloomed in spandex for the gardening season.
Hate to be seen at the garden stores in anything but my best. lol

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh my, your too funny!!!!!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

LOL JoAnn. I hope you are getting better. Nice side effect though, losing weight. I could use a little of that as well.
Nice sunny but cold start again today, temp is 21 degrees. Light wind helps. They have now replaced out little warming trend with a one day wonder maybe hitting 40 and more stinking snow for Tuesday. Noooo!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Frankly, I am happy for the snow -never, ever thought I would say that. But last year I winter sowed soooo many plants - and hopefully with all the snow to protect and insulate the perennials, I will have lots of two-year old perennials that will have lots of blooms for me.

Honestly, the numbers are quite overwhelming. Luckily, the neighbourhood is planning a perennial swap in April.

Is there going to be a NE roundup this spring? I am finally in a position that I might be able to start repaying people for their generousity. ^_^

Of course, I have winter sowed even more plants!

Meanwhile, weather today is sunny, bright, breezy - and COLD!

Its horrible out there.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, it's only 26 out there now. We have exceeded our expected high of 25. Woo hoo!!!! Gotta get out there and catch some rays! There's lots of sunshine out there.

Dave, I love that bamboo grove. I have wanted one here, but am afraid at how much it will invade. Just thinking about digging a 2' deep trench to put in something to contain it just sounds like too much work, but I have always wanted my own bamboo grove to harvest culms for all different kinds of things. If I had a large area where I could just let it run to it's heart's content, then I would consider it, but I only have 1.25 acres here at my Dad's place, and there are so many things I want to plant. I can't have something that will take over a large area like bamboo would. I like the black bamboo. I tried planting a bamboo shoot once that I got from a local man who has a large grove at the back of his property, but it died. Guess I didn't water it enough, though I suppose maybe I'm better off without it.

Hey, if anyone is interested, I'm seriously thinking of planning a roundup here in July, when my daylilies are at their peak. I would love to have everyone who is able to come and see my gardens.

Bright, but cold here. I can hear DH chopping at the ice on the walk. It is dangerous to walk around the car, even with the sanding on the driveway.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh! I would so love to see your gardens - but unless it is before July 4, I doubt I can make it. We are going away on a long trip this year to see the new grandchild.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Karen...A vendor was selling phyllostachys nigra at Tower Hill Botanic Garden last year but at $100 a pot, I wouldn't try black bamboo down here on the CT coast much less further north. It is supposed to be OK in our zone but be a shame to have it wiped out by a once in 20 year freeze. It is a beautiful bamboo and one I would like to have too.

As I mentioned, I don't see Yellow Groove as invasive in the Northeast. But that is my opinion. All depends on the lot and if you are going to mow or plan on tending the area. Putting some on the edge of a woods and leaving it isn't a good idea. It will take decades but will kill large pine trees.

Shoots come up in my sister's lawn and she lets most of them grow. Rather pretty. But if she wanted to, it would take no time to slice them off in the spring. They don't keep coming back all summer, what emerges in the spring is about it. When I speak to people around here, many believe bamboo is another Oriental bittersweet--a plague. It really isn't. It takes a while for those roots to become established. In 2007, after 30 years of no fertilizer, I put some 10-10-10 on my sister's grove (I wanted lots of bamboo for my garden). The grove runs 150 or so feet and in 2008 there weren't over 50 shoots which had come from areas not in the grove itself. A simple matter to knock them down (many never make it...they rot and break when three or four feet high...sometimes deer get them too).

Sorry, I kinda left abruptly last night. Thanks DP for the info about the 'Yellow Groove' DH thinks we could do that if he puts in a barrier of some sort. I did write the name down on my 'list'.
There is a garden near Cape May Courthouse, NJ that has a grove of bamboo that you meander through. If I remember correctly it is called Leamings Run. A fun garden, mostly of annuals, with different color 'rooms'. I have no idea what the entrance fee is now. I guess I could look it up. Lots of hummingbirds.
Current temp 27. Not much melting today, if any. Tomorrow in the 40's.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I cant believe the luck.
It's 31* now ,maybe a high in the 40's
We are remodeling the kitchen and the plan for today is to put a hole in the wall where the big refridg goes so it will be even with the counters. DD wasnt keen on spending megabucks for the "thinline" models that are flush with the counters. A bump-out of 8" is what theyre going for.
The wall is between the kit. and garage.
Yep!!!! outside will come inside for a few hours.
My job will be to keep the fire going.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Woohoo, JoAnn!! Glad you're feeling better. Keep us posted so I know what I'm in for when school is out. I can hardly wait.
Currently 43 and sunny. Heat wave!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful and sunny - today's highs are to reach 42 degrees!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Lovely sunny day now that the clouds have diminished and Feb is already warmer than all of Jan. with a temp at present of 42 degrees. Haven't seen that kind of warm for what seems like a very long time. Wind light at around 5mph and from the warmer temp southerly direction. They don't seem to be able to make up their minds yet how strong or what type of precip. is headed this way for Tuesday. I'm rooting for the going out to sea theory.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The hole thru the wall is going nicely.
Good day for it.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Timing is everything and yours is pretty good on this wall knockout. It will be worth it when they get it all done and a nice new kitchen appears, Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better too.
Temp soaring to 43 now. I wish it would last longer than one day.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

We're at 46!!!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

40° and dry, at least for the moment. Rain coming in tonight & holding for a few days.
I am going outside to pull up all the weeds that germinated & are now flowering despite the 28° we've had for lows these past weeks: such a devil-may-care attitude!
No dandelions yet, but Cardamine and Buttercup are on the move.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Holy cow! 52 now.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well - we're at 43 degrees!
