went running around fresh pond here at lunch - the city of cambridge (god bless these liberals!) clean the path around the pond better than the streets in my town - it's not even a fair comparison the streets are home were all ice with little to no sand or deicing applicant. most of the 2 1/2 miles was pavement.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 38
Cambridge was one of my favorite towns when I made my trips to Mass. My son was at Childrens Hospital for 2 weeks, then every 4-6 weeks we had to go back for Dr. visits...we did that for 2 years.
That'a a great shot Celeste. He looks c-o-l-d.
Thanks Weez... he does, doesn't he?

I have informed everyone and everything I am READY for it to STOP
It was above freezing today! If that storm brings snow, I'm going to be mighty unhappy! Pixie, I think you have a pine siskin---warblers usually go to the Carolinas & FL for the winter, although we do get yellow rumps down on our coast---South China may be a little far north, but I did see many yellow rumps in Oct. at Kennebunk Beach.
Mona guess -8c is 23F which is what we were today too. Your weather is very much like mine.

did you get the -35 to -39 for a month like we did lol I dont miss that it shows that in about a week we will finally be about freezing cant wait winter started about 7 weeks early this year hoping spring will come early also
Marylin, it's a Yellow Rumped Warbler..tell ya why I know. She's 86 and has been doing it for many many years. I call her Auntie T and this is a nice fact she taught me sometime ago about these little warblers.
"The Yellow-rumped Warbler is the only warbler able to digest the waxes found in bayberries and wax myrtles. Its ability to use these fruits allows it to winter farther north than other warblers, sometimes as far north as Newfoundland."
This week we will be a bit warmer than you...we're gonna have a heat wave!! lol
I thought so they are in my feeders all winter my way my sister told me I had lost my mind saying they go south but being in the woods it is warmer at my house also have waxwings at my place
wow get out the suntan oil lol we are suppose to go above freezing it will feel like a heat wave after -39 hahahah
As long as the wind is calm I can stand the cold....once it blows im whinning!!!
Probably the that's why the bird was known as the Mrytle warbler--I really don't like the change. Some ice melted on the driveway today, not as much as I would like. Predicted to be colder tomorrow.
yup cold is bad enough but with the wind it makes it ten times worst lol
Jan23.....my sister really likes her Phyllostachys aureosulcata--Yellow Groove bamboo. Our father planted it in 1965. Wasn't common back then and he went to a nursery in your state to find it. It is not as invasive in the northeast as its reputation. Posted a thread with photos and information on my sister's grove a while back here:

The canes are nearly 40 foot tall now and come in handy for all sorts of things. The shoots are edible and there is no shortage of them in April. Here are some canes we cut last spring to build tomato cages:
WOW! Those are really long...or should I say tall? lol
pixie...lol....some bamboo sites say 30' in our zone but they grow taller... the canes above grew in maybe a foot of soil on a rock ledge under pine trees (one of which the bamboo has killed) with no care at all. It is a tenacious plant.
Yes, my brother has some up at his place on the mountain and it's very hard to get rid of.
Maybe, we will rethink this. I did call DH in to see the pics and he just loves it. He wants it as a screen, but it would be near the street. Don't think the town would appreciate it.
Jan23...my sis is in the woods, she doesn't trim it back and the Yellow Groove has, as you saw, spread. But a cousin lives in town and it hasn't been a problem.. He planted it over a decade ago. It's 20 ft tall, canes no larger than an inch and so close together people (or deer) can't walk through it . The bed is about 5 feet wide. It effectively blocks off the yard next door. It does spread into the lawn but all he does is mow it to contain it. Might be slightly more aggressive where you are than in CT but not a lot. Now further south...it takes off.
