CODY, HOPE YOU'RE FEELIN' BETTER!!! BJ, I'll send you some receipes, too. I've read everyone's posts, and was going to respond to several of them, now I don't remember what they were!
Dimmer. I don't believe you're 56 yrs. old! You don't look or act like it! If you're ever in my neck of the woods, I'd love to meet you! I think we could have some swingin' good times! I'm not as spry as I used to be, but I've been told I lied about my age, too! 'Course, that was a few years ago! When I was 50 everyone thought I was 35! Well, I'm 71, now, but noone believes it (when I feel good)!

A quick hello .... so much has been covered in the past 3 days ..... as usual, won't even attempt to catch up but will definitely send out prayers for Cookie and Cody. Kathy, keep those pics of HP coming - she's a doll. Dusty, I'm not military but is it ok to salute you? I have so much respect for all you did for those boys in Nam and for what you continue to do today.

Had such a good time in my first quilting class Friday. Was there 10am to 4:30pm! Lots of basic info covered in the first class but we did get 4 blocks made and should be able to complete 4 blocks of two different patterns in the next class. Attended a class the next Saturday morning about how to program the software for the embroidery machine. Geesh! Did I need Marion there with me. Just thought I was somewhat computer savy but learned I'm dumb. These 70 something year olds all had their laptops and knew all about how to program their machines, download embroidery designs, etc. They put me to shame. Was so surprised when DH took me to buy a laptop after the class! Now I have a laptop to take to classes and to use with my new Viking machine. Just have to learn how to use it (the computer and the machine!). Does anyone know what the heck a DONGLE is?????

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

He was 22 the 7th and it seems like yesterday i brought him home from the hosp.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure I would want to know what a DONGLE is.sounds like it could get you into trouble...LOL

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Alright, I want to see a picture Kim!

YES!! How to I explain it without a picture. I'll be right back, going to go find a picture for you. All of my stuff is Dongleless.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm taking this from http://www.wisegeek.com

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) port is a small connector that allows a data cable to be attached so that, for example, pictures can be passed from a digital camera to a computer. On desktops, laptops, printers and other hardware, the USB port also allows for expanded functionality. Many hardware devices smaller than a pack of gum are made with one end designed to slip into the USB port. These devices are called USB dongles and can add features to the computer or machine that were not built in by the manufacturer.

A storage or memory USB dongle, also called a memory stick, provides a convenient means to pass files between computers or devices. The memory stick contains a rewritable solid-state memory chip that does not require power to retain its contents. As capacities have grown and price has dropped, these portable, plug-and-play storage drives have replaced floppy disks and even compact disks for exchanging files and archiving data.

Another type of USB dongle can add WiFi® functionality to a computer to provide wireless Internet connectivity. Most desktop computers can accommodate internal WiFi cards, but laptops and notebooks rely on external gadgets to increase features. The USB WiFi dongle comes in many models with the most basic model working with operating system software to locate nearby wireless networks in order to share access, commonly within the home or office.

A WiFi finder or scanner also comes in the form of a USB dongle, allowing a person to scan for free public hotspots while mobile. This type of USB dongle features LEDs that light without having to boot the laptop, indicating a wireless network has been detected. A series of LEDs can indicate signal strength, allowing one to glance at the dongle to see instantly if accessibility is increasing or decreasing. Different colored LEDs might also specify encrypted or unencrypted networks.

If you require Bluetooth — a personal area network (PAN) used to wirelessly connect your digital devices to each other — consider a USB Bluetooth dongle. Bluetooth has become increasingly useful for passing data between cell phones and computers, for syncing personal digital assistants (PDAs) to laptops, and for sharing files between laptops and desktops, to name just a few benefits of the technology. The advantage of Bluetooth over other types of networking is that it is easy to activate and use with virtually no networking experience required, and it eliminates the need to haul various cables around.

If you spend a lot of time on a laptop, you might want to make your printer and laptop Bluetooth-enabled. By doing so you can wirelessly link the two machines in a few seconds to send print jobs to the printer without having to move the laptop to the printer and attach a cable. Newer printers feature a USB port that can be used with a Bluetooth USB dongle, but other types of Bluetooth adapters are also available if a USB port is not present.

Company employees might be familiar with the proprietary USB dongle that acts as a security token to authenticate software in order to protect it from use by unauthorized persons. This type of dongle might also verify credentials or supply a password to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for field personnel, for example, operating on a secured system. Without the USB security dongle and proper credentials, a person cannot log into the network or access the software under its protection.

What does it look like?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I just took a picture of my camera dongle.

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

I have one of those it came with my camera. The dongles look like those little flash drive thingies, right?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

A Dongle?????? What the heck is that???

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Just the ends of the cable are the dongles. On the floor, from the large round part of the cable to where it plugs into the camera, that's the dongle. On the other end, where it plugs into the computer. Most of my stuff is dongles, which means it plugs directly into the computer with no cords. Let me find my memory stick...

Thumbnail by crissyr
Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

This is dongleless, no dongle attaching to the cable since there is no cable. Does this make sense?

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

Does your laptop need to plug into your machine?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Oh, I get it! You need to get a USB cable so you can plug your Viking into your laptop, right??

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

If that is the case,by what I've just learned, and you're never too old to do that, you would need a usb cord to attach both laptop and machine together so they can read back and forth.?.

Crissy, thanks for the explanation of what a dongle is. Now I have a headache. LOL! Seriously, it did help but I'm not sure I understand 100%. When DH gets home and reads your post he will know exactly what you are talking about.

I don't think my machine and computer have to be connected. I think all I have to do is plug in the memory stick. While in class yesterday, the lady I sat next to and looked onto her laptop had a short wire thingy (about 6" long) coming from her memory stick with something attached to the other end of it (I think). It was not connected to anything else. See ..... that's how technologically retarded I am - "a wire thingy". LOL!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well that's what it should be called. LOL!

I'm close enough to you that if you need help let me know. There's a website that sells cords and all kinds of other computer and game related items for 70 to 80% less than the retail stores, but I don't remember the name of the website. It doesn't show up on normal searches either, it's weird. I'll find it...

Anyway, I needed a different cable to plug my Wii into the TV, Walmart carries this cable for $25.00, Best Buy is a little higher than that, and so on. I found the identical cable for $3.00 on this website.

To quote Jaye..."Chinese New Year, it's the year of the Ox....Ox means a tough year :( ...." Tell me about it......

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Debra... My machine stays connected to my laptop all the time... when I do embroidery, I can send files from my hard drive directly to my machine via a usb cable. HOWEVER... there is a little box that reads files on a card that I could use with a Dongle, and move files from the "reader" to my machine, without being connected to my computer. I don't have a reader, and so far, haven't needed one... therefore, I don't dongle. The software in my computer speaks to my sewing machine and sends files that I've downloaded in my machine's file format.

Crissy-waht a great pic of you and DH-not how I pictured you-how long ago was the pic??
