Garden Photos of '09......#1

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Ladies, I cannot cut my hair to save my life, so I end up spending almost $20 to have it cut for me, including the tip. I gave up coloring some time ago, as I can't afford it, though I've done it at home before. Seems to come out better if I have it done by a pro.

I have to replace my sneakers abo
ut once a year. I usually do the bogo sale at Famous Footwear (buy one get one half price, though I wish the other one was free!), and I have to wear New Balance, cause anything else seems to hurt my feet. I have always wished I could get the cheap shoes at Payless or Walmart, but I need to have comfortable shoes, especially when I'm working in the garden.

I usually always buy my clothing on clearance or at least 40% off or more, depending on what the full price is. I love it when I can get 75% or more off. I got 2 nice new winter coats on sale last winter. One was at Khol's on Black Friday, a nice, really warm one that comes down to almost my knees. The other I got at Lane Bryant at our local mall. They were closing that store, as they had just opened a new one at a new outdoor mall nearby. It was a down coat, and very nice. Got great buys on both. I love it when I can get shirts and pants for $5 or less.

Couldn't cut my own hair, but DH does it for free. No coloring but it was a shock a few years ago to have to change blonde to grey on my last passport information.

LOL on the hair-coloring. An elderly lady at our church whose mother is still living at 104 and living alone still colors her hair. Her reply when asked about it is that she promised her husband that she would never be gray. Her DH died in 1969. She is of sturdy stock.

Jen, you're right about the twins. People that knew we had a set always guessed the wrong two.

Thrift stores are great as well.

well I have news on green two of my flats have babies in them lisianthus and delphiniums are up that make me happy and this weeks I will start astilbe since I need about 40 plants and I refuse to buy that many I decided to just grow them lol cant be any harden than other perennials

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's very exciting scicciarella. I haven't tried astilbe from seeds YET.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Its a first for me to and I am also trying heuchera the prices are just to hight on the actual plants cheaper from seed will not plant them in final location till the fall with keep them in 6inch pots for the summer

Karen, I'm totally with you on the hair cutting. I can't cut a straight line in the back to safe my life! I'm fortunate though that my sister can cut a straight line! So, every time that we get together for a visit, she cuts the back of my hair, I trim the front. I don't know what I'm going to do when my hair turns grey, more than an amount that I can tolerate! I think that it's a skill that I'll have to learn. And I also have issues with my feet and have inserts and all that not sun stuff, so I have to make sure that I put some $ aside for good tennishoes. Sometimes the bogo sale at Famous Footware occurrs when I need them, which is nice.

Great job there Scicci!

I don't know what this thing is. I walked through several display gardens and nurseries this weekend. this was something sitting up on a shelf.

Good morning. that sounds good to me! Since it's not something that I want to grow, the names not really important. It was just something pretty!

I agree with you about the gardens. There are several in the area, that I'm so amazed that more people who complain about winter blahs, don't get out to see. Besides that, I have a few friends with beautiful gardens that I check out every so often.

Today is a warm day, so the "endless stream" was finally ready to be turned on to see if the pump would work. We got flowage and the dogs went swimming. I was looking out the window when they jumped in. They love the water no matter the temperature. Snow drops popping up. But it is suppose to get cold tomorrow. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Patti, those pictures are inspiration to the soul!!!!

Does starting 3 Bhut Jolokia seeds count.Well I will tell ya something. I grew these last year. Just put 3 seeds in the seed starter. The seeds are brutal. I licked my finger and its alive.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my husband is upset since I took over the small beer fridge for seed hahahha he doesnt drink much anyway I told him he can have it back before we start the garden outside since that is when he likes to have one at the end of a hot dirty day in the garden

Looks like spring is a lot closer for you out there on the island Patti. Bare ground and snow drops. Nothing wrong with that and I am so eager to see bare ground again. We have had snow cover for so long now I can hardly stand it. Your pics give me hope it will go away soon, thanks.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is not what the groundhog said this morning 6 more weeks of winter lol make him do it again maybe he will get it right

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Brook, that was a lucky shot. I had to keep telling the grass to "hold very still now, you hear??" I'm sooo jealous of your snow drops! the foliage on them here, is just coming above ground. Great picture too!!

Scicci. Cute pic. I think that's a great idea for the fridge.... and it's just the right size! The garage here isn't heated, it's the perfect place during the winter for soda and beer!

A few more pics from this weekend.

Karen already saw this one.

Now that's a yellow fir!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

And Jan has seen this one.

Last year these trees opened up too soon and the buds and flowers froze off, I'm really hoping that doesn't happen again.

I forgot to mention that yes, it is early for the general majority of the flowering cherries, etc. to be opening up, but this one (matsubara red) and the next one are well known for openening way before the others.

and 'Trumpet'. I guess that's a very fitting name for the first of the flowering trees.

and the last for now.... ranunculus. I must see if mine are coming up!!

Really beautiful.
Wouldnt the yellow fir look good with a red witch hazel?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks.....
oh, most definitely! and the yellow fir is small enough to be planted right by or even slightly under the hazel!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Okay, note to self - yellow fir and red WH. That is a wonderful idea.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol, I agree... how is it that Jo Ann is so easily able to talk us into such things?!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Just wonderful pics RC as usual. What a difference one zone makes. This snow blanket we have here is not warming things up at all. Every day a little closer guys. Ignore the snow tomorrow and just look at all these pics of spring.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Karen, if it's any consolation... the stuff in my own yard is several weeks behind what's going on in Eugene. I looked at my ranunculus today. They're still fast asleep and my witch hazels are just barely starting to open up. But, I am very happy to be able to visit all of the flowering things several times a week!!! That is very fortunate!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yay!! Redchic has visitation rights to floriferous things now.
I'll have to check into yellow fir. LOL
Maybe JoAnn thinks we are easy to influence. :) That would be an affirmative.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol, definitely a very loud affirmative! I can remind myself of the name of that little fir if you want?

South Hamilton, MA

hog said 6 wks more of winter, not of snow. Weatherman didn't hear him :)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)
