What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part II

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm thinking of going over to Wellesely College - they have a greenhouse and you can walk around in it for free. Can't take anything home - which is good. I'm running out of windows anyway

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, those icicles up there are brutal! How do you change THAT?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, you are my nemesis. I just looked at klehm's catalog on line and I am quickly going broke! I also sent a lily order to B&D today. Patti

Breakdance'
Miss Ariel
El Condor
Circus Clown
Indian Summer
Little Yellow Kiss
Sunny Crown
Bonbini
Conca d'Or

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it is a good thing you didn't have the klehm catalog in your hand it would have been worse. i go two special alberta spruce's there last year. they should be a good size about the time i start receiving social security.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Well isn't that nice of you wha purchasing some of our trees. They are indeed slow growing but they look like Christmas trees and keep a wonderful natural shape so don't need pruning. I think that makes up for their slowpokeyness.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

love alberta spruces and have two large typical green ones. the little gems i got were about 4-5" tall so they will be awhile unless you are a Lilliputian -one shows new growth as yellow, called rainbow i think, and the other new growth comes in white - forget the name now - both turn back to green.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Klehm's got my wallet too. I've ordered from them before and liked their stuff, but they are on the pricey side. I kept my order to things I couldn't find elsewhere. Evidently, judging by the size of my order and lack of plant buying self discipline, they have quite a few items not found elsewhere.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have a big monster white spruce. I luv the paleness of the new growth in the spring. I will try to get a good pic of the new growth that shows the contrast.

DH says the rule of thumb to a blue spruce is 10 years growth.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey Patty I have Sunny Crown, planted last fall we'll see it bloom this year.
June ordered Brent and Becks Conc dOr they sent right aeay. They bloomed in august I love it for cram white.

Patti I too have been eyeing Sunny Crown, Bonbini, C. Clown and Miss Ariel! I too also own Conca d Or and love it's huge flowers.

South Hamilton, MA

I just have a lily collection. When they go that is all until they figure out how to get rid of the lily leaf beetle. Just too much time to go & pick them off every morning.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sorry to hear that iris. I didn't know you had them. They are truly evil. They're in our area now. I have alot of lilys and I'm very worried about them.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Please don't send them my way. I saw what they did to Boojum's a few years ago. Very sad. Patti

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I spend my mornings squishing the lily beetles all spring and summer. Evil critters!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have fought the battle and I win...no little evil red bug is going to deter me from my lilies. I love them too much....not to mention I have a 'few'.

Did you really get rid of them all pixie??? How did you get rid you do it??? I may be worried but I am also undaunted. I put in a bunch of new varieties this fall ^_^

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

All this talk about lilies is lifting thy winter spirits. Thanks guys!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Please pop in anytime, Magnolia!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

D-nut
You need to start early! I would say that is # 1 key.. unfortunately I combat them with chemicals ...I have no choice. What I use can NOT be used in New York, and im sure other places so it's a matter of what is allowed in your State ect...
Find a pest killer that has 'Imidacloprid' in it, thats what kills them.
I use this:
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Dual-Action-Rose-Flower-Insect-Killer/rtu.html
I spray in the spring then spray every few weeks, maybe 3-4.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Mags! What do you use against the Lily Beetle?

Thumbnail by pixie62560
Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

To date, there is no lily beetle in Wisconsin. We do have our share of critters though and one of them decided that lilies wren't too bad after all, the Japanese Beetle. It's a huge issue for me. They defoliate the birches and they love my dear magnolia blossoms, they eat right through their second set of blooms.

Thanks for the welcome you guys. I pop over here every now and then. Winter is really slow in most of the forums I follow and you guys always have nice pictures ;)

Pixie, you know how to steal my heart, don't you? Is it 'Lavender Gem'? or lavender something? I adore it!

Thomaston, CT

I also ordered Bonbini---love anything lily, especially the clove & vanilla scented ones. Wish I was going to a flower show this year--just to suck up some plant-scented air--how come no show in MA? Is there one in Providence? Went to that one about 10 yrs ago.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

nice pic

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You are so good Mags!! It is Lavender Gem..wanna try another? lol

The Seed Order I posted near the top of this thread has arrived from Hazzard's .... pretty fast. Look Good, so I am hopeful.

I am going to try and germinate some on Saturday and see how viable they are.

If anyone wants a few seeds, I am just about certain I will have plenty to spare, just let me know! The list is at near the top of the thread.

There is the Feb show in Providence. The MA show failed because the MA Hort Society messed up their money. In fact the society is in big trouble that way.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Willie I would like a few Aster's if you have some to share.....what would you like?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Hey Pixie, it reminds me of 'Arena' but it looks so tall. What might it be?

Here's a bright one to add to the thread.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

An LO called 'Deliana'. Those LOs do well for me here.

Drat! 'Garden Party'. See...I'm not that good after all ;) It's very pretty.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks. Have you ever seen the one Pixie made me buy? Her picture stuck around so long in my brain that the following spring I was ordering one. Fine taste, that Pixie.

One of my favorite super fluffy lilies. I believe these to be the same lilies B&D Lilies are offering this spring, sold under different names; though I would admit to not having a DNA test done. So I cannot be sure, but they look exactly like what I have had for two years. Whatever the name, I adored it.

each day a new laywer of petals open and it blooms for about 10 days it is just amazing

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The ones I ordered came from a place called Faraway Flowers. I got the ones that first year Dutch Gardens offered them too and they all turned out to be the oriental lily 'Dizzy'. They sent me replacements last year, none of which bloomed. Luckily the Faraway Flowers doubles each had names attached to them and all bloomed. The one above is a second year bloom in part sun. It really was adorable, but then I am a sucker for anything lily ;)
