Betty, thats a great read. Your friend in Ireland sends you lots of neat readings.
Thank you for sharing them.
Hi Wonderhug!! So good to see you.
I am glad things are good. So you are having warm weather...I love it! LOL, we are having a heatwave, lol all of I think 10 degrees.
The sun is shining bright so thats nice.
Vicki...smiling over here, Good to see your post. Well, lol I guess I am glad you are being missed of the snow. Your roads are too windey, so I am glad you have safer travel this time of year.
Carol, I took another good like at your woodpecker. He is beautiful. Do you have the red headed ones too?
I's that Cardinal stunning against the white snow...I just love watching them.
Yesterday was MIL's gathering for her B-day. 73 she will be on Wednesday. Geesh if we could just get her to stop falling. This just worries me to no end. Told her she has to stop rushing around.
I can't wait to see all your 7 item secret swap pieces!! What a neat swap. Should have joined, too late to even notice it was going on.
Anne Marie, so good to see you. I am glad all went well with the surgeries. Now you are on the road to recovery. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers...Just take it easy, real easy like the doc says.
So, I am now boohooing...MY car is broken!! Something very wrong. Everything is closed today, well i think it is. Anyway going to have to take her to the dealership. Hopefully it isn't something horrific. Just cross fingers I make it to the dealer. Yikes, I am terrified to drive it...lol, thinking to trade vehicles with Steve.
It's too bad you feel that way Gita. I wish you happy Lurking, posting where you enjoy.
Thank you for all the information you have shared with us.
Too funny Betty, There are many movies that have me in tears beginning to end...LOL, I stopped watching Lifetime, at least for a while.
I was just telling Jaye how I love to read books like that, they have me in every emotion...Finally I found the book I have been waiting for forever. Still haven't gotten into it, but when I do, that will be all i do until i finish it. LOL, it's only 582 pages so a couple days.
Well i have to go look up the dealership...Hopew you all have a wonderful day.
Betty, are feeling better today? Sometimes you got to be a couch potatoe!!
Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #79 visit with friends...
Oh...
Hello! Welcome, welcome...
4004...How nice to start gardening. I do hope you will learn lots. DG as, you see has a wealth of information.
LizH. Nice to meet you as well. Glad you came in to say hello.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Sending you hugs too.
I am judy, LOL, talk about Chatty...I enjoy a good Blab session. As you see as I was typing,
three or four posts made. LOL, I am always behind, slow typer here.
Hi Bev.
Highlight the words. Open a word document to save it into.
After highlighting the words press the ctrl and the letter c.
This will copy the words.
Go to your document and place cursor at top. Then hit ctrl & the letter v.
This will paste the words into your document.
Then save.
You have to do it right away. Meaning you have to paste it right after you copy.
Hope that works for you.
OH Love that flower.
The toys have come a long way. I'll see a child with something and think, "Man, they didn't have that when I was a kid." I was just in my own little Hot Wheels world. And when did they start making Tonka Toys plastic? Where did the metal go?
Well, it's supposed to be 42 with a wind chill bringing it down to 37. Not that nice outside. I think I'll stay inside.
DRATS..had a long/long post, yours must have knocked me off the system Judy..lol...so now for more gabbing..thank goodness my typing is high speed...
Must tell you all, I called Ruby on Saturday morning, she says to say hello, was under the weather these past few weeks, will be back to say hi when feeling up to par, anyway, she said my voice and my talking weren't as she had imagined, said I sounded like 'prim and proper and much like an Aunt of hers' sure did bring a smile to my lips...think with me always doing 5 things at once she was under the impression that I'd be talking much the same way 'helter skelter'...love her to death...guess what, this summer she and DH will be visiting..won't that be cool...we'll even get a few crafts into the schedule..
Bev, had in my post how to 'copy and paste' glad Judy was able to help out..Liz is always sending me mega heart warming poems and all are appreciated..
LizH..my heart goes out to you..losing a loved one after 56 years must be overwhelming...no more lurking for you, you must take the most comfy chair here in the room and join us...North Carolina Mountains..wouldn't happen to be on the main highway heading south would you? tell us a bit about yourself..know weather has been our topic for some weeks, how is the weather in your area? Be on the dangerous side in those mountains wouldn't it be?
I keep gabbing with you all, hear about warmer climate and because I could not go to Florida this Christmas I'm getting antzy..maybe for March Break..better count my pennies..did talk to Kyle about it on Saturday..wouldn't travelling with a grandson or grandsons be fun? we'll see...
Laura, now who could forget about you..as you'll have seen in many posts, we always send our love and best wishes...as cold as it's been here, I bet the heat is almost unmanageable where you are...beach is not far from your house though, that must give you some joy...sending prayers for your sister...OMG finally, your hubby has gotten the promotion..are things improving at work?
4004..(name please) lol...was smilling when I saw you post that you were filling every square inch..omg don't we all try that, then we are making more beds to accommodate the overgrowth..I often get a kick out of gardening when I'm about to clean the lines around each area..in goes the border shovel and out comes at least another 6" of gardening space, where will it end..shortly no grass only flower bed..my preference is a helter skelter garden, wild not manicured..I started probably about 3 years ago..many say I've come a long way in just 3 years but as I visit other gardens (Starzz) for example I see just how much more I have to do...
Can you garden at this time of year? imagine you could...was trying to think, on my numerous visits to New Orleans my most favorite visiting spot, I was in Baton Rouge..is this not where Jimmy Swaggart Ministries is? visited their Church and College and Ministry tent...then travelled down to New Orleans..
Why did DH make you cut your 'sweet basil'? was it to make it grow stronger..does it flower..must check it out..
Crissy couldn't your girlfriend come over for the day seeing you can't be outside enjoying the day..or was it you going to visit with her..think it was...
Funny part of it Crissy is you have to wonder how much further can toys and inter active games go? guess plastic toys have to be replaced, good selling advantage..metal rusts...lightweight a factor as well for shipping...
I live 30 minutes outside of that city. No one comes over here, kinda like it! I could be outside if I wanted to, and it looks real pretty with some clouds moving in now, but I just looked at the temp, it's 42 with a wind chill bringing it down to 37, so it's not that nice lol! I'm wondering if my neighbor up the road is working today, would love to visit them, they're from New York and very sweet but always busy and I'm afraid I'm interrupting something, know what I mean?
Liz I wanted to comment on my previous post but got tied up when the phone rang. I am so glad you have come on here, I hope you stay too! This is a wonderful thread, I know you're lonely and this is the place to come and say whatever your heart desires! I found it, shoot, probably 6 months ago and I love every second of it.
Thank you Judy. Always wanted to learn how to do that. Will write it down in my no forget book. Thanks for sharing Betty. Judy that flower is my Abe Lincoln lilac. Welcome to our little part of the world 4004 yeah name please!! HUGS TO ALL and LIZH big one for you and sorry for your lose. BEV
Crissy do you know their telephone number...just give them a call, tell them you don't want to drop in without calling and wondered if they had any time free on their schedule..me, I like 'drop-ins' as you've probably guessed...
Love lilacs Bev....mom purchased a couple of years ago a 'yellow' lilac tree, I'd love a couple of those but haven't been able to find them and a few white as well..lilac trees make up my secret garden hide away, several are dying, quite old, would love to plant some inbetween as not to be without...when grown I could cut down the old ones..is that a good idea or not? most likely you will say the new trees won't grow, better to take a few years without..right..see I'm learning
I would never say won't grow Betty. Try it,but if you wanted something differant with berries for the birds I would get Summer Snowflake Viburnums that just grow 5ft. They have them in Bluestone Perennials I am going to get three to put back behind my bench in my shade garden but they will get sun 8ft behind but will look great from my front deck. BEV
Dave had his telephone number but deleted it. It seems everytime he got someone's telephone # he deleted it, so I keep all of the telephone numbers now. They're in their early and late 50's and I think they love drop-ins, as I do too, but I'm chicken! I want to get her phone # anyway.
Betty, it was quite a surprise to see someone complain about YOUR thread! I look at it this way, if you don't like it, don't read it! Personally, I love it! My life is not so filled with things to see and do that I can attack others for sharing their happiness and woes! Almost everyone I've run into here on Dave's has been understanding and loving. I think it's good for us to have some place we can "unload" our cares without being chastized for it.
Since you started this thread, I think you should be the one who says what should be on it! I have not seen any "bickering" on here! I love every bit of it! It's interesting to know about our Canadian neighbors do! We're all alike, huh!
KEEP ON KEEPING ON!
Audrey
Morning everyone. Hope your all having a wonderful day. Hope your weather is clearing up! Sorry to hear that gita does not feel welcome here. She will be missed.
Welcome to the new girls. Please tell us your names, and what you like to do. Garden, crafting, sewing?
LK
Dang I wish that appt for my car was sooner. I need to clean seeds ug. I don't wanna! LOL
Like so many I dearly love this thread and don't know what i would do without Betty and all of you!!! Yes, most of us are chatty group....I love reading about everyones day.....it adds a great deal of joy to my day.
New people are always welcome, hope you will stay and chat along with us.....can belong discussions, or if you are a slower typist like me it can be a few lines at a time. We would love to know your name and interests, we generally go by first names here.
4004, Don't know about cutting back Basil.....it is in the upper 20's here and mine is frozen out for the year. If you drop in over on the Herb Forum I am sure there is someone there who be more familiar with growing in your area...
Laura (not my daughter, my other Laura!) Glad things are looking brighter...so glad to hear it and hope you drop in more often....bring a little of the warmer weather with you!!!
Crissy just drop in....tell them what you just told us, get their number so you can call in the future, most of us 50 somethings love to have company!
Waving to everyone I have missed.........and we will miss you Gita....hope you drop back in later when things are brighter.
Bev, are Summer Snowflake Viburnums like snowball shrubs? I planted a few of those but not so sure they like my soil..When I visited with Carol I so loved all the trees, gave the yard such a homey feeling..ended up purchased 2 flowering crabs..one did well, the second, my fault, decided to move it because of the pond and it died..at least I think it did, cut off the branches and some of the main stalk, we'll see...Bev have you heard of what they call the yellow type lilac?
Crissy go for it, they probably are sitting there wishing someone would drop in to make their day..off you go, don't have to stay all day for the first time..
Audrey you were making me feel so at home being Canadian I thought your were almost going to use our famous 'eh'..amazing how I don't think I use it a lot, but if I pay attention, yes I do..much too much...
Morning LindaKay, what are you doing on this holiday day?
Morning folks,
Having a major heat wave here....near 50 yesterday and already near 45 today. Makes me want to dig in the dirt.
I just wanted to mention to 4004, I am not sure in your zone, but think the basil might come back for you. I cut sprigs (whole stalks) all the time, and let some go to seed, but it keeps returning. Of course our climate is not the same as yours. But just maybe yours will do the same. It acts a little like mint.
Lizh...I remember you from another thread a while ago. This one will definitely give you some company.
Will chime in again if I ever have anything important to share.....pretty boring at my house right now.
Wishing you well.....
Never boring at your house Shar... has Ethan been to visit of late?
50..wow, that's gardening time for sure..isn't there a lot of work that has to be done to those rose bushes?don't know if I mentioned it but I purchased a wisteria plant (would it be same as your tree? do they automatically get that big..) have a feeling I should not have planted it close to my back deck, but Lordy that's where it would look the nicest..
Any plans on travelling to Florida to see your daughter this spring?
Betty Google for the yellow lilac. I have heard of them but think they are very hard to find. HUGS BEV
Will do..I could always go visit my mom at the cottage while they are in the city and make a dig..lol
Betty, I think all wisteria are vines. Sharan has had that one for a looooong time for it to get that big! They wiss take over a tree, if planted at the foot of it. They will make a great arbor, too. I love wisteria, both for it's color, and it's scent. I wish the blooming time was longer. My grandmother had one when I was a kid, and my cousin chopped it down. She got soooo mad! Her name for it was "tomb vine".
tomb vine? although Carol also has a weisteria I believe on her secret garden gazebo (is that what it is Carol) I'm not so sure being 100 miles north of her that mine will prosper..I'm just putting anything and everything in my garden and hope for the best...I got a gift certificate from the girls who paint at my house for the big nursery in Barrie...can't wait to get a few shrubs..won't be for many a month though..
Hi, taking a quick break.
Been busy around the house.
Wanted to say Yep Betty, answer toyour comment of days ago, I am trying to get everything done so I can play come spring.
This year i am planning on that outside greenhouse. I will have all the time to work it. But, you know I will include some where for critters too.
Can't tell you how i just love seeing Shar's Wisteria. Soon, she will grace us with her beauty once more.
Did you all know that That Gorgeous tree started from a Twig? It did!!
Betty, I hope you'll be able to find a yellow lilac...I will be excited for you if you do, I have never heard of one being yellow!
A big heavy sigh, I have been working on Liz's fairy flag and I am at another stand still. Yikes, Well, tried to do a soft sculpture, body for her.
Not having much luck...Going to give it another whirl, oh not going to give up just yet.
Hi Shar, so good to see you...I don't think anyone is boring, least of you.
OH MY Gosh, Forgot to tell you the Best news of late. Alissa got a job!! A real job at a nursing home. She starts this week. She is very excited and we are too.
alright off again...
Crissy, I love those little cars. And, not sure when tonka went plastic...but i have two huge tonka trucks out in my gardens. Forgot where Ii got them...but Jacob sure loved playing with them.....shhhh, he still does, uh as he plays with the young neighbor Max. That when toys were made to LAST.
Judy it must make you so proud to see Alissa doing so well...thanks to your girls it seems she's on the right track...
Went looking for the yellow lilac tree...wonder if mom got it mixed up, found one that says yellow lilac but after blooming all the leaves turn a pretty yellow..must do further checking..
You have committed yourself to a zillion hours on that Fairy project for Liz...I so enjoyed seeing what you had created alread...could you not do the body Judy in beads as you do like bead work? Might be less frustrating..
The other day when I was surfing the web I saw Judy a greenhouse all done with windows taken from an older home...now didn't you say Steve was doing renovations on an older home-couldn't he talk them into all new windows..lol you'll put it at the back fencing I would imagine?
Do remember Shar's tree was a simple twig when she began, also remember that she helped it grow into a formation..do our memories serve us right Shar?
Betty, as to your wisteria......
There are a couple of kinds, and mine is American wisteria, sometimes called KY wisteria. It is the kind that does not send out spreaders from the root as much as the other kind.
Judy is right, I did start it from a little sprig, I started two at the same time, the one that did best I started against an old upright pole that was one end of a clothesline, very sturdy. As it grew, I kept wrapping each vine around itself, till it got to the top of the pole, then I let it hang over from there. Every year as it sends out runners, I again wrap them around the trunk of the first one and around the pole. Then a couple or three times a year, I trim it back so that it gets thicker at the top. It doesn't bother anything, just seems happy to grow up wrapped around itself. The one in front which is the same age, I started around a broom handle, after a while the broom handle rotted, so I never replaced it, just allowed the tree to wrap around itself. Its structure is not as pretty, but it is also beautiful when it blooms.
Think I have a photo of the trunk....
Yep, your memories are right!!!!
Now that IS a big trunk Shar, could get into trouble then having it so close to back deck...have to rethink that one..now how old would you say they are?
Found a project already for the weekend..
Starting to get the winter blues, might bring in one of my water fountains, purchase a few plants and put downstairs next to the fireplace and rocker..make a spring room lol
What do you all do to get out of the dulldrums....
My nieghbors have one that they planted on an old windmill tower right over thier good well and it grew so well it empties it. There went thier good garden water!!!! I had one on the west side of my garden shed and it was growing up a tv tower hooked to the facing. In three yrs it fell and tore all the facing off the shed so no more will I have one. Trumpet vine is the same way but if you have them in the right place they are pretty. My mother had one growing over the top of the old back john. We had to watch the bees LOL BEV
Hello All - you have all sent me such Warm Welcomes! Thank you! I will try to hop on from time to time. Have 3 teens so we keep quite busy! (which is why we built the pool ...."If we build it ...they will come". (and we will know where they are :) )
Thank you Crissy - I will check out the mid south forum. When I first got into this last February or so...I was on DG all the time reading up on everything. Too bad I didn't retain it very well...or I would probably remember what it said about cutting back the sweet basil. :) Betty - I think my style is on the wild side as well! Which is why I got involved when I noticed that DH was going to plant 6 plain bushes side by side in one area around the pool. (later learned they are called "Indian Hawthornes). No way that was gonna happen! Hibiscus, black knight elephant ears, potato vine, portulaca's, herb garden, etc. etc. later, it was gorgeous last summer...and I can't wait to get started again! Yes Jimmy Swaggert is/was here in Baton Rouge. I visited New Orleans this weekend. My Sweet Basil was about 4 feet tall and gorgeous. It did flower in some area's I cut it back (spaghetti) and some let it flower. Then Gustav knocked it over & it caught some kind of fungus. DH told me to cut it back and it will come back in the Spring. (he said it is like hair... you have to cut it). It's around 60 and sunny today....getting the gardening fever! Back again soon! -- Mary
Mary your garden sounds beautiful..love potato vine but only see it in planters..I took one inside in the fall, looks pretty limp..they are annuals and I don't think they want to prosper all year round...3 teens, oh my, that's full time job in itself...
As for the pool, mom and dad had one when I was in my teens, my DH and I lived on the lake so between both sure now how they attract visitors..kids always had mega friends drop in, like you, always knew where they were..a plus for sure..
New Orleans, isn't it about a 2hr. drive from Baton Rouge..you were there on the weekend, omg, I'm envious...the times I visited I was mainly at waterfront and on Bourbon Street..sure would have liked to have travelled the bayou and spent more time in the graveyards ...is all back to normal?
Getting a little more difficult for some to access who are on dial up..
Please come join me...
