that is amazing that they have survived all the abuse of the boats, they are such beautifull and gracefull animals

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

What part of FL were you?

And it is sad to see scars from boats. If I remember correctly from when I was a kid (grew up in S Florida) they were called "gentle giants".

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my next florida trip I will so and see them have only seen them in the wild

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Evie - we are in the Fort Myers area of south Florida. We see them in the River at the end of our street occasionally, but I've never seen so many together at once.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Venu, I've seen the chichillas at the pet stores. They're adorable, and their fur sure is soft.

Thanks for sharing the manatee pics, Louise. Maybe on my next trip to Florida I will get a chance to see some myself.

I hope you do, Karen!

Yes, I do want a rabbit, but so do my airedale & pointer----I'm hoping HayHay's other grandparents on the blueberry farm get one for the kids---that way, I can love it, but not have to do the tough work---they have many acres & a barn--perfect bunny habitat. Thanks, Louise, for the manatee photos---we saw them in FL a few years ago---one came quite close to the airboat we were in.

Boats are their nemesis, Marilyn, but aren't they cool to see!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sophie doesn't mind and neither do I! Actually im tickled pink that you posted so soon! They are such gentle beast, and so graceful.....thank you for sharing Louise.

Wild Rabbit Update

I heard back from the guy I spoke with on Friday and he checked with a guy in his office. This other biologist thinks the fur was too light to be the New England Cottontail (NEC). There was a white speck on the forehead, but I think it was snow. Will have to get another picture to be sure. They also don't think my neighborhood has the right habitat. There hasn't been a NEC sighting in Vermont since 1971, so it would be a miracle if it were the NEC.

I'll try to watch for it in the morning and dusk to see if I can get more pictures. apparently if it has a reddish patch on the back of the neck there's no way it is the NEC, no matter what other signs it may have that says it is (that's the impression I got from this morning's email).

I just hope I see the bunny again, let alone get a good picture to prove/disprove the above!! :)

Thomaston, CT

What happened to the NEC---coyotes?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Louise, loved the manatee photos. I'm surprised they haven't learned to stay away from the boats. It's so sad. I'd love to see one in person. My aunt (87 and still a world traveler) was recently in Brazil and got to feed the pink dolphins (fresh water dolphins that she said didn't look very pink to her, but I thought they did in the photos). Very cool!

Celeste, Sophie is just as adorable now as she was when she was just the size of the juice can. It's great that the dogs accept her. Apologies to Sophie, but Orry and Isabella still steal my heart.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

The manatees are slow moving-the boats are fast. They also can not hear the sound of the motors until the boats are to close for them to get out of the way.
There was 156 of them at the Blue Spring State Park this past weekend.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Yes, the manatees are quite slow. Surprisingly so

I saw the rabbit again this morning and it clearly had a white spot on the forehead. Therefore it is the Eastern Cottontail (we only have that rabbit in the state, other than the possibility of the NEC).

I believe the NEC dwindled first because of deforestation in the 1800s, then man introduced the Eastern Cottontail in the 1900s. They eat similar things, though their habitats are different, and I believe the Eastern's habitat went well with what was left after the deforestation.

Here's a pic of the rabbit in question. I threw out some quartered apple yesterday afternoon, and it fought the rabbit over it :) (never seen anything jump so high before...the squirrel too!)

I some rabbits at my house but have never gotten close enough to say what kind it is they are easy to see just when the snow melts since they then still have white spots

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Eevie, your bunny looks very healthy. Good for him.

I've always wondered why some kind of protective cage couldn't be put around the propeller to reduce manatee injuries. Looks like you had a very enjoyable day out in the sun and warm weather, Donnie!

I think we're due for some new Sophie pics please :)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Venu--was just thinking the same thing! Besides--I just plugged this thread in the voting booth forum! It is my 2nd fave thread in Daves Garden^_^

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

There was talk about it and one person designed one, but you know people they do not want to be bothered "it might slow down their boats a tiny bit"

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Perhaps we should put those people in the water and see how they hold up to a propeller. Grrrrr!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that works for me haahaahha

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hi Jan. Nice to see you posting. You've been missed! Pink dolphins???! Wow, I didn't know there were such critters. I love the dolphins. Like the manatees they are such gentle and interesting creatures. We have a lot of dolphins in our big River here. They and the pelicans frequently say "good morning" when we walk along the River every morning. Do you have a photo of a pink dolphin you can post?

Louise - that is a great idea about the cage around the propellers, but as Wren said, the boaters would probably protest anything that might slow them down. We continually see irresponsible boaters here and it makes me angry. I like Dahlia's suggestion!

Evie - sweet rabbit......and a BIG one! How cool.

We'll see how large Sophie grows.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That is a shame that so many people don't want to be bothered with anything that will help save wildlife or preserve the environment in some way. Oh, don't get me started with that. I could go on and on. People are spoiled and only want to do what makes their lives easy.

Evie, that's a cute bunny. I don't feed them here, as I don't want to encourage them to dine in my gardens. Besides, my dog would like to dine on them. LOL!

ha ha!

I don't put out food often, but I give the animals a shot at old fruit (and some veggies) before I put it in the compost. Usually the squirrels get to it first :) The animals come around anyway - I live next to woods and the feeders attract all sorts if I want them or not! (just last night there was a deer at the feeders?? scared away before I could see what it wanted)

And I also do not get why so many are clueless about wildlife and nature in general. I guess they have the mindset that Earth is *our* place - we come first and everything else either gets along or doesn't. What they fail to understand is how important diversity is for our own survival (like for the food chain). I think it takes too much thought - not that many people be able to think more than a step or two ahead.

Thomaston, CT

I agree---the animals' habitats are shrinking, & no one seems to care. Love that big bunny---glad he got to the apple first. My stepson in Maine has always been a hunter. But, a few years ago, during a very hard winter, he started to feed apples to the deer on his property----he hasn't shot one since.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My DH and son are avid hunters but they too leave food out for the deer in non-hunting months. Nost people think it's to bait them in closer when actually it's to give them a fighting chance to make it through a harsh winter.

Oh my I said this to DH just the other night.
What was the human population on earth like 200 years ago? What was the population back when the dinasours roamed? Look at the population now.

I dont belive in God. I think humans were put here on earth by "Something" I think 3-4 Chinese were put on their continentent, 3-4 Africians on Africa, 3-4 Ubangies in South America and some Indians here in the US etc, etc. "Something" is watching us, dig up the earth, move it, make something, and of course watch the population explode till its depleted. That "Something" is like Aliens or whatever they are called, up there somewhere in their machines, trying to figure out what is going on and why we are doing what we are, BUT THEY LIKE IT. We are experimental guninea pigs. They will come, not in our life time and take over. I know - I am a strange thinker.........

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I believe in evolution we are all animals exept the human animal is civilized or I should say most of are lol hahahhah

and you are right if the dinosaur still existed would we be so advanced or would we still be food and running to stay alive lol
