I believe the NEC dwindled first because of deforestation in the 1800s, then man introduced the Eastern Cottontail in the 1900s. They eat similar things, though their habitats are different, and I believe the Eastern's habitat went well with what was left after the deforestation. Here's a pic of the rabbit in question. I threw out some quartered apple yesterday afternoon, and it fought the rabbit over it :) (never seen anything jump so high before...the squirrel too!) |
