My aphrodite is dying. After those two beautiful blooms, the other two buds have shriveled up and fallen off. :( the leaves are turning yellow also. I feel of the bulb and it feels firm and not soft. I don't know what I have done to it but I am not happy.

Susan -

Is your Aphrodite by a window and perhaps getting too cold at night?

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh no, Susan! Is it in dirt or water? I'm thinking , of course of drainage or the possibility of over watering. I am like a nervous new mother with those of mine in water, fearing "yellow leaf syndrome" (my term for drowning plants).
Oh, I hope someone has some good suggestions. Maybe pull the bulb and check the roots??? Heck I shouldn't be giving any suggestions, given that I have never dealt much with bulbs.
those pictures were sooo absolutely gorgeous, I cannot even imagine how disappointed you must be at the idea of it possibly dying. Another thing I have heard of sometimes as a "pick me up" is charcoal. Maybe Google that too.
At least you did have the wonderful time that it was in bloom to enjoy such beauty that many never get to see at all and your pictures to remember it by. I sure hope it gets better and recovers for you to enjoy again.

Blessings

langbr, no it is in the middle of the room so away from drafts

Birdie, it is in dirt and I water it with an h2o2 solution that has super thrive in it. I guess I should pull it up and check just to see what is going on under there. It is in a pot with a drain hole not a vase and it does drain.

It does sound to me like too wet but I didn't give it anymore than anybody else (notice how I 'personalize' my plants, LOL).

I just spent an hour getting 135 crocus bulbs planted and that didn't even make a dent in the bulbs on my front porch. I am getting very discouraged this year. Oh well..

Thanks, Celeste! I see you're in on the passifloras co-op. I've never tried them before. Do you overwinter yours in a greenhouse? Which ones can you grow? I had never considered them before due to hardiness but at that price it could be worth a shot.

Genna, I got the Spanish Moss at Michael's too. It came in a bag as big as a pillowcase so I had plenty left over from the last project I bought it for. It does give a nice finished look.

Hi all. Still fighting whatever this bug is here. It's about to get me down. Maybe it's time to go get something for it. Thugh they aren't giving antibiotics for this stuff. They say it just has to run it's course. Yuk!

My Red Peacock looked like Pixies Susan. The color messed up in this picture but it's the deep red. That one had 4 blooms. I have another one that had 2 so far. It looks like there might be another coming on

Here is the Red Peacock. Just to show double, not for color.

Here's another labeled Red Peacock but it sure doesn't look like the others Any guesses anyone?

Gorgeous pic Cat!

Thanks Clemen. I'm waiting for the Aphrodite to bloom. And hoping it was labeled correctly.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

What d u do with them after they bloom, toss them out??? or saved them??

(Cathy), MO

I tossed the one I had last year, but this year will save them. You just let them stay in the pots (or in warm weather can plant them outside). Then late summer next year, dig them up, dry them and give them a rest, and they will bloom again when you plant them. At least that's what the site I read says! :-)

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Cat, do they need to be cool like the tulips to bloom??? i usually buy one a year and toss it afterwards, just wondering!, I intruded in your thread, lol!

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Hi Clem!! Imagine meeting you here!! ^_^

I have some that I purchased from Jackson and Perkins last year as a gift to myself...LOL and I kept them in the house all summer. Wasn't sure I could put them outside.....but I put them in a spare refrigerator with the temp slightly raised for about 6 weeks and took them out about 2 weeks ago. I have tall stalks (leaves only) on 2 of the three bulbs, but nothing that looks like a bloom pod. The third one (right in the middle) appears to be putting up a bloom pod....we'll see.

I keep on keeping mine, but I have yet to have one rebloom. I am accumulating quite a number of these. LOL

The reason I always have to buy more each year is the old ones haven't rebloomed for me. :(

Bbrookrd has a whole stash of them she keeps going and they are pretty cool. On one of these threads she posted some pictures. She said how to keep them going I do believe.

I saw on one of these sites they had both Peacock and Double Peacock. No, it is a small catalog I got in the mail. I will get it tomorrow and tell you who it is.

Yeah Genna, way to go!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

since these bulbs were priced according to type, is there any recourse. I just wondered if anyone had contacted the company that we got them from. for the ones that were mislabeled

Here's my pic of Orange Sovereign which opened today. It has 3 more buds and a second stalk as well.

Just for sharing I'll include other amaryllis I've had blooming that are not from the coop.

Here is a cluster of Charisma blooms. A second stalk is also on this one.

And here is Exotica a peachy amaryllis that I really like. It too has a second stalk and a total of 5 blooms on this stalk.

Here is my little mini called Amalfi a sweetie pie pink. It had 5 blooms and is now finished. It's blooms were about 5 inches across and the stalk only about 10 inches tall.

Here is Full House. I really like the star shape in the center of this one. It had 4 blooms this year.

And last is Samba which hasn't fully opened up for some reason (lack of heat I think) but it put out 4 blooms for me.

Very pretty Brenda. Now can you tell everybody how to get the plants to bloom when they want them to? LOL, good info needed.

Jeanette

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL Jeanette I have NO idea on that! I have a 4 bulb planting and Charisma is the only one blooming. Exotica and Orange Sovereign were together but Exotica has been blooming for about 10 days and Orange Sovereign just opened today. I'm as clueless as the rest.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

your Charisma is fabulous and that little Amalfie is cute and lovely too.
I sure hope I get a bloom soon.

Amaryllis.com have both the singles and doubles. They also have jumbo bulbs. I have a jumbo bulb in the Red Peacock. Just planted it today. It will be interesting to see how it does.

Lovely! Exotica is one I hope to add next year after seeing that photo.

My Picotee was almost ready to open it's fist bloom when I left work on Friday morning. the stem is short and only has 3 buds so far that I can see. I will get a photo when I return to work Sunday. has it bloomed for anyone else? Wonder if it is always so short?

Susan

What did the information say about it Susan? Speaking of Susan, that amaryllis named Susan is gorgeous. Do you have it? I almost bought it instead of Red Peacock.

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Susan, I just found Exotica here: Garden Value Outlet.com marked down from $13.74 to $10.31 for their largest bulb. 32 - 34.

That is a really good buy. A lot of their stuff was sold out like everyone elses and this one was too on some of their different sizes. So, it won't be long and this will be too.

OK, here's my story and the results so far:

The first bulbs I planted were the ones that had a flower bus nosing out; they were Moonlight, Jewel and Picotee. I planted them Oct. 21st. No reason for this particular date, I just mention it because the first to flower was Jewel, on Nov. 7th, on my nephew's b-day, so it took this one less than 3 weeks from planting to flower.

(By that time, the Picotee bulb didn't "move" at all, and when I checked it, it was soft and mushy. It is a strange thing, as all of them were watered in the same schedule, and it was planted in an unglazed pot, so it should have breathed just fine, and I checked all bulbs when they arrived, and all were perfect!)

In my hands, Jewel has a foot-long stalk. White flowers, greenish-yellow towards the throat. A slight scent (the first Amaryllis bulb of mine that has any scent), but nothing "crinum-like", nothing sweet. In the background is the stalk of one Moonlight, more than twice as tall...

Thumbnail by goofybulb
Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

In the inside of the throat, Jewel has a deep-red ring at the base of the petals, which I found to be very pleasant, but dificult to photograph (at least to me).

Maybe it's me, maybe it's because the bulbs were "prepared" for winter blooming, the flowers were not fully double, the inner petals did not develop completely, but to me is a beautiful flower, and I'm very happy about it! We'll see how the blooms will look in the future seasons.

Thumbnail by goofybulb
Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Before the Jewel opened, the first Moonlight decided that my shelves are too close apart... I had to move this one, so the blooms will have enough space to stretch.

From left to right, they are two Moonlights and the Jewel. The Moonlights continued to grow, and both bulbs gave over 2ft scapes.

Thumbnail by goofybulb
Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Moonlight has bigger flowers, white with pale lime veins that gather towards the throat, coloring it.

Thumbnail by goofybulb
Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

These first flower scapes stayed opened about one week. The front one is Jewel, back of the triangle are Moonlights.

Another view of the sunlit Moonlight

Thumbnail by goofybulb

Then life happened, and while each of these three bulbs grew a second flower stalk (one of them you can see in one of the previous posts), I kinda forgot about the other bulbs... last check on them was when Jewel flowered, so it was begining of November...

Another Jewel flower closeup, better petal development for the later flowers of the first scape.

Very pretty, goofy......wish I had gotten Moonlight. I needed more whites to offset all the reds I have.
