Amaryllis coop, pictures, questions, sharing and chat

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

This was labeled nymph. However, after posting it on the amaryllis forum, I think it is aphrodite.

I still love it, but it would be nice to have gotten what they said.

Orange Sovereign

Look at all the lovely pollen. I have pollenated it and moonlight. I love to get seed pods and then I don't ever do anything with them. But it is fun to do it anyway. LOL

wow Susan! I've never been a double amaryllis fan but that one is stunning!

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Speaking of moonlight, here it is. It is starting to go I think. I just pollinated it so we'll see if it makes pods.

The doubles don't make stamens so I can't do anything with them.

HELP Please!
I really need to know...do the ones planted in water need feeding? How long will they live in water? Seems like planting in soil would be best for long lasting bulbs......but i am new at this.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I have never planted in water, so no help from me. sorry.

Just thinking about it, it would seem they wouldn't last as long as in soil but what do I know. LOL

Susan you have me wondering now. I ordered the Aprodites! Not much growth on them yet so I don't know what they will turn out like. Bu now I'm hoping they will BE Aphrodites!! :-) Though Nymph is gorgeous too. And that orange is beautiful!
Wineaux, how many blooms did it have 2 weeks ago?? The one I had last year had 4 blooms but none of them were at the same time.
This is fun! I am trying to space mine out so I can have blooms most of the winter. Getting ready to pot up some hyacinths too!
I will take a pic of Red Peacock tomorrow and post. It should be open all the way by then.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

My Red Peacock is about to open too. cat we can race! LOL

Birdie, I have never done this before either, but if it were me I would mix up a weak solution of a balanced fert. Maybe half strength and give it a little and see what happens. Now remember, the instructions I got from somewhere said never fertilize a bulb that has not started putting out growth.

I forgot what stage you said yours was at.

I just potted (in water some) last weekend. However, all the ones that i chose had begun putting out growth. So am I to understand that perhaps I should wait till there is at least a couple of inches of growth, or does that mean that if the bulb is putting out growth, then it needs food (that makes sense!)
In fact, unfortunately one bloom start had already shriveled up and dried ;-(.
Another one has something very interesting: what looks like bloom starts coming from almost the bottom part of a bulb ~ one on each side.
I will send pics as soon as I get a new chip for my camera.

Sheri, I think we are all learning together! :-) The one I have blooming now is in water and I didn't add anything to it.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Cathy, the one you have in water, is it putting out new growth?

Birdie, How did you have the one that shriveled and died? Was it still in the sack? In water, or??

Sounds like the one with the things coming out the bottom(?) is having babies. Pups? I doubt if those are blooms Birdie.

As I understand it, you should plant that just like it is and let it grow for a season at least.

I wish Brookrd or andi would come on here and give us some help.

Jeanette

(Cathy), MO

Yes, it looks like it's got 3 more buds coming on Jnette. This was the one I found in the sack that had 5-6 inches of growth, so I had to do something quick! I just stuck it in a tall vase with dec. gravels and water. It's doing great

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

the one with the dried up bloom was still in the sack. A number of mine look slightly "puckered", as if they are drying out. They have been still in the sack and box, although the box was open. i keep my house quite cool , so the temp has been between 55* and 65*. The little dried up bloom had a shriveled and dry neck so I removed it, there were 4 or 5 tiny floret type things developing inside. The bulb does, however appear to be sending up another bud stem (it is Jewel).
Gotta go now. My mom is here to pick me up. Staying at her house till the weekend. Knee surgery tomorrow. Any of you that do, please pray for good outcome and quick recovery with little or no pain.
Hugs

Good luck with your knee!

I'm certainly no expert with these plants, but I really have had at least a couple that have never been in soil and I've never fed them. If you want to do a weak solution, I can't believe it would hurt, and perhaps over the long run it would be beneficial, but mine have been fine without.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I've done that Sheri, you'll be fine. Jeanette

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

HI All,
I'm at Mom's and have absolutely no idea how I am able to get on line, but I can!
My surgery went wonderfully and much faster than expected. The surgeon told Momma that my knee was a "mess" (her word), but that he was able to clean and reshape damaged meniscus areas and that after I heal things should be better than in a long long time (then it will be time to do the right knee!!) So.....I expect to be in good shape with 2 good knees by spring. Yippee!!!
A really cool thing for me was that after asking him, I learned that my surgeon is a believer in Jesus, a Christian, and even prayed with me before surgery when I asked if he might. that was such a comfort to me and very very important to me also.
You all are so kind to care about me, who you don't even know, but then we do sort of get to be like distant family I think.
Anyway, Goodnight and big hugs and many blessings,
Sheri

Hi everyone. Pasadena is blooming for me, Papillo just has leaves, I didn't pull the baby off of her and the baby has got leaves too. Any suggestions? Should I leave it or try to force it into cold and start again. Aphrodite just got planted a couple of weeks ago and is starting it's stalk coming up.

Hey cat how are ya? My router went out and I just got it all back up and running.
