Your pool and the warm sun don't look too bad either! I haven't even been able to finish mulching because my mulch is frozen solid!
Amaryllis coop, pictures, questions, sharing and chat
Very pretty Wineaux. How many do you have in various stages??? I have a blossom open on Moonlight but had to take 2 off because they had rotted. Remember I used that "violet" pot? Didn't work too well.
Jeanette
Those are lovely Wineaux....I have 2 with buds, the rest are slow!!
I don't know if this is the proper thread for this question, but is there any trick to getting amaryllis bulbs to bloom at the same time? I lust over the beautiful pots that places like Jackson and Perkins offer with multiple bulbs in bloom at the same time in one pot. How do they do that? I think that makes a spectacular display and I'd love to know how to do that.
Thanks.
Sarah
Mine looks just like that. But, it would have had 3 blooms but I messed up with the pots and 2 of them rotted so I took them off.
Jeanette
Susan if there's a trick, I don't know it. I have a pot of 3 Red peacocks together and they look like they are all going to bloom at different times! LOL. If someone knows please chime in. I still have 3 Aphrodites I plan on potting up next weekend!
So glad some of you are starting to get blooms! One of my RP's looks like it may open up by next weekend.
I gave away a Moonlight last night to a friend but I forgot to take a picture of it potted up. It had already grown 3 inches in the bag! I just potted up Papillo for myself this morning. This one I'm trying in water. I found this heavy glass container. They only had one of these, wish there were more.
Dyane, be sure to give us pictures of this Papillo along the way. I gave one to my sister for her birthday last month so am anxious to see them. Also interested in your method of putting it in water.
Jeanette
I'll keep you all posted. Most of the others will be potted in light sandy soil.
...not a very good picture....sorry
I don't know anything about them Wineaux, but I think one of those should be the strap like leaves. Don't you?
Jeanette
Sarah - I can think of two reasons (well, three) for the JP pics. Either they clone their bulbs (so it's essentially the same plant and under the same conditions could bloom at the same time,) they have a huge selection to choose from and just pick two or three with blooms for the photograph or ... Photoshop!
I think if you put them out in the yard and control their environment as to when you take them in etc. that you might be able to get them to bloom at the same time. Just my thoughts on it.
Brookrd would know better. Where are you???
Jeanette
Does anyone know how long the flowers should last? My Pasadena bloomed pretty but already the flowers are fading. Is there something I should be doing to get them to last longer?
Wineaux, I don't know the answer to your question, but I would think that they are like other plants in that the warmer the atmosphere, in my case my house, the faster they will go thru their natural changes. Meaning that I wouldn't expect the blooms to last as long as they would in a cooler environment.
If I am wrong, please someone step in here and tell me. Thanks,
Jeanette
All I have to go from is last years bulb. I had blooms for probably 2-3 weeks, but they didn't open at the same time. Each bloom lasted maybe 4 or 5 days.
Gosh, I wish I had kept better track of my Moonlight. It is still very pretty. Been open for about a week now. I think a real big thing is little water. And yet, maybe I am really giving it more water than you all. So, don't go by what I do.
Jeanette
I got six Pasadenas and five Aphrodite. to give away. I put them all in a cool place as soon as I got them. I potted up the Pasadenas first- about 14-16 days ago, and potted up the Aphrodite 6 days later. I now have 3 Aphrodite with flower buds, one with just leaves (does that mean it won't get flowers this season?)
The Pasadenas, though, which I planted first, are doing NOTHING. If I peek hard, I maybe see some leaves?, but no swelling bud.
I potted up both kinds of bulbs the same way-soaked, planted in the same potting mix, etc, etc, etc. Same room (large picture windows east (which also has a high window up under the very high ceiling), south and west. Out of direct sunlight. Same watering plan-water well at planting, then very little until flowers pop out. What gives? If you get leaves first, does that mean the flowers are very delayed? Diane
Diane, why are you giving them away?
Ok, you mean you bought them as Christmas gifts!! I misread what you said. Sorry. Ok, let me start over. I think when they say soak them, I think they mean roots only. I read it to mean soak the bulb. Mine looked like a soggy onion when I finally planted it. So, 2 of the blooms rotted and I took them off, but the 3rd one has been blooming for a week or more now.
I think if you have them planted that you just go ahead and give them as gifts. I think the recipient will enjoy them whenever they bloom. It is more fun watching them grow. I don't think you can control their blooms that much.

Just re-read your post. How much did you soak them? I soaked a Moonlight and decided they should only have the roots soaked. I have never had any so can't respond as to the difference in getting leaves or flowers first. Just don't know.

I bought mine to give away also.....you know~~~gifts
Hi Birdie, yeah, I am kinda slow on the uptake. Must be all that stuff I ate yesterday. LOL, hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.
Anyone do the 4 a.m. shopping??
Jeanette
Thankfully, no.
I have a similar issue to Diane's - I have a couple that never really went completely dormant and still have leaves, and I'm wondering if that means I won't get blooms on them. Sure hope not!
LOL - I don't think you can control these blooms - they seem to have their own programming,....
I finally made it to a hobby lobby yesterday but ALL they had were clay pots - so I bought a couple of those, and also a red Christmas bowl that I plan to use. Anyone on here have any experience PAINTING clay pots?? What type of paint? does it need to be sealed? etc. My daughter wants to paint one of the pots for my MIL to have...........
Thanks for any help!
Genna
No Genna, I haven't, however Wal Mart had them with just some color on the outside below the rim and they charged $6 more for them than for the plain ones right next to them. Might take a look at them and maybe you can figure it out.
Jeanette
Our wal-mart doesn't have a flower pot of ANY kind in it...... that has been one of my problems on getting these potted up!!!
But, I think maybe just regular craft paint - with some spray sealer...... guess if it doesn't hold up, we will know for next time! ^_^
Thanks!
Genna
Our Wal Mart cleared out all of theirs also, except in a different department, near the garbage cans I think, there is one aisle that has the pesticides etc and there are a few clay pots there. Good luck.
Jeanette
You can use regular acrylic paint or Patio Paint on the clay pots. Be sure to seal the inside with polyurethane, esp. the drainage hole before you start to paint. When you finish painting, seal the outside. If you want to do a quick paint job, just take a natural sponge and two different colors. Sponge one color on the pot and a different color on the rim, being sure to sponge the inside of the rim also. Leave as much or as little of the clay showing. This is also a nice finish to paint over. Just got the one I painted poinsettas on several years ago to put my poinsetta in for Christmas
What type , if any, of plant food do the ones planted in stones and water need?? I cannot imagine that water alone is enough for them, or is it?
Sheri
I know what some of you are talking about. I have my first Red Peacock bloom opening up now. And another kind I planted BEFORE I did this one, doesn't even have a shoot starting up, stem or bulb! I just figured some kinds are much slower growing than others, and they would take off sooner or later. I planted some Picotees over 3 weeks ago and they are still just sitting there also. No change at all. The one that is blooming now is in water. I don't know if that makes a difference.
Oh well, I figure the ones that are slower to grow and bloom, will just cause me to have flowers later in the winter! :-) And that's good.

Kathy, are the Red Peacock blooms the same size as the Moonlights? Or do you know? In the pictures we made our selections from they appeared to be the same type of blooms. I wonder if they will get more than one stem?
This is so much fun seeing the difference in them tho. The problem is a lot of us are giving them as Christmas gifts so may not see the finished product. LOL.
I think that if we had several and planted them all the same, treated them all the same, like outside in the garden in the summer, put them in dormancy for a length of time (if that is what you wanted to do), etc. then I think they might all bloom at the same time.
However, I feel the same as you Cathy, in that it would be nice to stretch out the blooms over the winter to have something bright and cheerful around all the time.
Jeanette
Gee, I can't seem to figure out any rhyme or reason to these bulbs. I still have 3 more to plant (this week) and all of the others are in some stage (or not) of developing. Doubt I'll add much more to my collection for next years. But they still have time to knock my socks off!
Here is my Jewel this morning,CAT, if you look behind her, that is the Pasadena that bloomed a week or 2 ago and is now putting out another batch of blooms!
Davis, they will knock your socks off it's just the waiting...lol then we need a pic
Jeanette you're right, this is fun watching them changing, some from hour to hour! and flowers are gorgeous...I wonder if any amaryllis have fragrant? Has this has been discussed before?
I wish y'all would show more pics. Here are some of mine. mine
I think this question was addressed earlier but I am not sure if I ever saw an answer..... I have three bulbs that I put into a slightly warmer than normal refrigerator to chill for about 6 weeks. These are bulbs that I bought for myself from J&P for Christmas last year.....anyway two have the three have blades stuck up and are rapidly growing, but no appearance of blooms.... Does it mean they will not bloom this year since the blades are already up??
I really thought last year that they stuck the blades up first, but I can't remember and then someone said they usually stuck the bloom pod up first and the blades came AFTER the bloom.....
Just wondering.................
Thanks
Genna
I've had leaves come up followed by the flower stalk so don't give up.
