26 and a bit breezy. Hit 22.5 overnight. Great tree, Patti. What size is it?
23* and I just about froze filling the bird feeders.
I have to get my butt out there to the pond and plug in the de-icer .... already starting to freeze over.
winter care of the garden can be more labor intensive than summer weeding.
Definitely! I need to get a new bird feeder ..... the old one some how got smashed .... I am guessing the next door neighbor's cat.
JoAnn can you fill my feeders while you're out there??? lol That other city gardener lived in Brooklyn I think??? WHO was that???
brrrr 26 high of only 37
Blowing a steady 30. Not bulb planting weather. Got down to near freezing last night. It looks like we actually have some flurries going on right now. Not happy, gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr or should I say burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Victor, I didn't measure her, but at least 12' to 15' tall. She came through the night just fine. The guy we hired, Mark, who is standing next to her on the truck is 6'. He wanted to keep her for himself, so he gave her extra love. This is the most we ever spent for a tree even at half price. I hope 'Nellie' likes it here. That is also the name of one of our dogs too. She is a parthenocarpic plant, but I might try to find a little male to go with her in the spring.
The nurseryman had her for over a year and though she was in perfect shape, he wanted her sold, so she would get planted this fall as he loved her too. The rest of the 1/2 price stuff was mostly things that were in not so special or misshapen. She was the only one of these that he had and certainly the biggest holly at the nursery. I didn't even stop as we saw her to look at the price but certainly halted to admire her wistfully, as I knew the price would be more than I wanted to spend, but DH went back and looked and said she would be twice the money but 4 times the tree. Made sense. She is going to cost me a tad more as there is a spot behind her that needs a big Viburnum to complete the picture. Not sure which one yet. I am going to get out Mr.Dirr. Then get out my shovel. Patti
Patti that tree is beautiful.
Hope they're digging the hole too! How big a viburnum?
She is definitely a beauty, Patti!!
Thanks all. I love her.
Victor, No, I can dig the big hole, but just need to make sure I can haul it via our truck from the nursery here and then unload it to the spot. We have a big hand cart. I can't afford any more hired help until next spring when I will get the guys back to help mulch the beds. I might not be able to afford them then either.
Snow showers are over. Still blowing about a steady 20mph and it is 33 degrees. Patti
We had our freeze last night.
Now I can dig up the dahlias & do all the stuff I gotta do.
Man... it's COLD out there.
The wind has died down a bit. Makes it a bit easier.
Nancy
30 w/out WC and sunny but still windy.
Well, the weather here is cold, cold, cold. Didn't get over 33, and I think with wind chill it was below 20. But lots of sunshine.
I'm not ready for that much cold so soon. Last year spoiled me. It was mild till December. In fact the Norway maples hadn't really changed much till late November. I went out taking pics the morning of Thanksgiving, and the Norway maples were really nice. Now there are no leaves on them at all. And all the oaks at my place are completely bare, too, and they are the last to lose their leaves. At least I can clean everything up now and not worry about having more leaves fall.
Wow! Pollyk, what did you do for work that you put in 300 miles a day for? Were you some kind of professional driver, or did you just have a very long commute? I was a cab driver in Reno, NV at one time, and I had a commute of 130 miles per day. I work with special needs adults now, and I drive them around a lot. I put on over 1,000 miles a month, which is more than the average person, though you certainly have me beat.
Patti, was that a Winterberry Holly you got? Actually, it looks like a different kind, cause all the Winterberry Hollies have lost their leaves by now. I'm planning on getting one this weekend. I've wanted on a long time.
No, Willie, it's beginning to look a lot more like Christmas with all these cold temps!
NutsforDL, No, it is an Ilex cross between a English Holly and a Chinese Holly called 'Nellie R. Stevens', but funny you should ask as I was looking this fall for some winterberry on sale. They didn't have any. I do want 3 of them for a different spot on the property so that will have to wait until spring. Patti
Down to 29 already. Supposed to hit 22 again.
21° now,dropping to 17 tonight.
Our high was 32, but the wind chill was just awful--walked across the dam, but not one of my better decisions! Had to zip my face into my jacket--my fingers were frozen even with gloves.Tonight---15 deg. I knew it was going to be a bad winter! Patti---love the tree--have always loved holly, reminds me of my Dad, & all his hollies---he rooted one for me, but it is small, purplish, & has no berries--guess it needs a mate. I also love winterberry--here it grows where it's very wet, don't know if it will grow dry.
Patti, Kennedy's Country Gardens in Scituate has them for $29. I don't know what size they are. That's where I'm going Saturday to get one.
ROBINDOG, the Winterberry is native to wet areas, but I've read it will do very well in average garden soil, too. I saw some along Route 3 yesterday, and went by the same spot today. Today there was a car pulled over to the side of the road where they were. I'm assuming they were stopped to take some of the berries. Too bad. I think people should leave the wild ones alone, but there are always some people who don't care if there is any left for others to enjoy.
Karen
We have some wild ones on the property, but not were we can really see them. I can get some nice ones here for full price of 72 buck a pop. Not doing that. I will wait until spring to pick up some small ones. I can be very patient for a price sometimes especially since I just spent a wad on that holly.
28 out now with wind back down to 12 mph with few minor gusts. Night all, Patti

Seventeen degrees and clear. So dry that there's barely any frost. I don't think we got above freezing yesterday, and probably won't today either. Hurray for the woodstove!
