Here I am!

After 'enjoying' the past week of waking up to temps below 15°, we finally broke through and were 17° at wake-up time!

Right now it's 21° and spitting snow flurries.
Wind: WNW at 9 MPH
Humidity: 49%
Dewpoint: 10°
Pressure: 29.98 in. and rising
Windchill: 12°

I have a feeling that winter's temps are gonna remain around for a long, long time!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

brrrrrrrrrrrrrr

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Candyce I knew you wouldn't leave me to freeze all by myself!! LOL
Poor Deb is up there in N.Y. freezing too, stay warm Deb!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I would never leave you alone to freeze, Celeste! Misery loves company, and all that. Poor Deb. Poor anyone in the chill zones this week and next!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Deb and I live "over the hill" from one another.
We are both putting on the fleecies today. Its windy too.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes actually have my Maine Moose fleece on! And I'm playing hookie from work.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha ha ha!! Too funny!!!! All of us sitting here in fleece!!!!
Sorry Jo Ann, didn't realize you were so close!!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm close to Jo Ann, and Deb, too. What is it with this weather so early? I'm hoping this is not going to be what the whole winter's like.

Last year and the year prior I was still planting up to just before Christmas. I doubt I'll see ground again now until April.

Has anyone heard the long term winter forcast for the Rochester area?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not for your area but I noticed in my back yard that the bee's nest are fairly high again. Good indication of how much snow to expect.
Last year they were 10 to 12 feet up, this year close to that.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Some one who has The Farmers Almanac gave the predictions for our area, but of course my 73 year old brain released the information.
I think wny wILLI HAS IT.

South Hamilton, MA

Bitter & in the 20s yesterday. 30 today, but except for doing groceries I am staying in. Red tail hawk in backyard at noon--I wouldn't object if it had squirrel lunch.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks for that link, Jen. I looked at the Almanac for my area as well. To say that I'm not impressed would be an understatement!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah, for the atlantic corridor it's going to be cold and snowy till March, oh boy!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks for the link.
do you have to pay a subscription fee in order to access the Almanac?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, all, for your thoughts about Molly. I wish I still had the photos of her head 3 months ago when it was covered with horrible crusty sores from the drug reaction she had so you could see the difference. The top of her head and her ears erupted with the horrible things and she couldn't stand the itchies. As unhappy as she was to have to sit up on an uncomfy chair and pose for the camera, I wanted our vet and my son to see how things have cleared up since she's been on the raw diet, which I was terribly skeptical about. In her case, it is doing wonders for her.

Those NE temps are pretty darn cold for this early........hope you all stay warm! Candyce - how many cords of wood have you gone through already? Hank is very concerned about you guys after seeing what Gregg had had to cut and split when we were at your RU. If I could, I'd send you some bottled sunshine!!!!!

Cute fish and turtle, Victor! Hank went for a bike ride today and saw 3 huge turtles along the bike path.

It's Friday Night Football down here for us tonight. My high school is in the playoffs. Football down here is rabid! Lots of pro players have come out of my high school and the atmosphere is really something at these high school games. We might as well be at the Patriots!!! LOL

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

No fee for the almanac

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

great thanks.

Louise ~

So glad to hear and see how well my sweet Molly is doing. She did look a bit offended at having to pose, but oh, how healthy she's beginning to look! As for the wood, hmmmm. Tell Hank not to worry. Really. We've burned about a cord so far, and have about 8 cord downstairs in the basement, and another six or seven cord stacked up outside. Gregg loves to have it warm indoors, so we will have loads of warm temps all winter long. He really did work hard on getting it all cut and split. What is really good, though, is that it was all free!!!

Right now it's 16 degrees outside and 72 degrees inside. I feel like Quiznos ... M M M M toasty!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

OMG!
It's just 15 degrees outside right now!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

OMG is right....your freezing lady!! It's 21 here but the wind has been making it brutal for the last 2-3 days.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Jen, I hadn't thought of it, but it does look like the Nemo tank. That was actually a very big tank with a lot of colorful fish. There was a lot of action going on in there. Very nice. I like the sparrow picture.

It's supposed to be pretty cold tomorrow. I finally broke down and got my winter clothes down from the attic. Needed my nice, warm winter coat.

I don't like what the Almanac is predicting for my area. Colder than normal winter, then warm, dry summer beginning in May with a hurricane in August bringing much needed rain. Then dry again in Sept. and Oct. Maybe I'll have to install drip irrigation this year. I have too many gardens to keep up with watering.

Louise, that drug reaction Molly had reminds me of something that happened to a friend/coworker this past summer. She had a serious drug reaction that almost killed her and left her scarred for life. It's called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and it's pretty serious. The skin gets a rash, then blisters, then peels. The person ends up in a burn unit, as they are susceptible to any infection. She had to be induced into a coma as the pain was so bad. I think she was in the hospital for about 2 months. We were all praying for her. I think it's a miracle that she survived. She had a 30% chance of dying.

Candyce, do you only use wood for heating? We have propane heat. Installed it last year, and we love it. We do use a wood stove as well for supplemental heating. I don't really know if it saves all that much from using just the propane, but it sure is nice to have a nice roaring fire in it. It's great you got all that wood free. How'd yo manage that?

Karen

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

YAY! A heat wave - 38 degrees! LOL!
I spent nearly 5 hours cleaning up the yard.
The table/chairs are covered (with stuff stowed underneath)
The hose is draped over the bird feeder poles so it can drain.
I store the hoses & my pot feet in the trash pail, where they serve as ballast so the pail won't blow over during winter storms.

After we return from Thanksgiving in VA, the bird feeders will go up.
I'll be watching the birds & planning next year's garden.
:o)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just trying to find germination answers from Poppy lovers in the south,.
What an effort in futility to read their posts knowing the seasons are reversed.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Are you looking for stratification info on a specific poppy variety? Or, just general info?

I used to live in Houston for a while, want me to try and "read between their lines??"

(Just kidding!!)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the help Willi.
Just talked to DD who has had upperlevel botany and she said to germinate in late March in the garage where its cool enough.
This is why I dont start plants from seeds-- too much jazzing around. Just give me the plant and I'll put it in the ground.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I hear that, JoAnn!

Though, with all the work that it is, I look forward to start sowing some seeds indoors (or the garage, as you noted) in the spring. It's like a "free" puppy; cheap seeds = soil, containers, space, time of labor, etc.

No such thing as a "free" puppy.

But, starting seedlings is something to do after the dead of winter has passed and the itch to see spring underway. I was too busy this past spring with the new business, I missed my chance to do the spring seedlings. Hoping the seeds I collected for last year will still germinate this spring. They usually do.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I was thinking it was a heat wave today too. It's snow showers and 25 degree's right now, will be dark by 4!

Cloudy: 25°
Barometer:29.9 in and steady
Humidity:42%
Visibility:10 mi
Dewpoint:9°
Wind:NW 22 mph
Sunrise:6:45 am
Sunset:4:05 pm

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

These are the dark days I hate.
I love June when I can sleep with the windows open.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Me too, not enough daylight....I need the daylight for a good balance on my mood swings!! lol
