Phyllis, kids eligible to ride the bus? For a field trip or to and from school?

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL... Cindy... my sun porch is nothing but plants and cuttings I got from DG friends and sistahs... my basket of seeds are full of one I stole from all over and some from gifts from DG friends and sistahs... a few I saved from this years blooms in my own yard...
All of us are going to have beautiful landscapes, because of the generosity of our sistahs...

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh , nope can't say that ! Aren't suppose to or plants will die--so I have been told.

Would you hold onto them as I really do plan to come see you soon. Trying to work out ny schedule now.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

They'll come back from the roots. Burthem with what's left of the crown 1" below the ground., I they didn't eat the roots too?

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Nope, that is what I did this morning just at the crack of dawn. Neighbors must have thought I was nuts--oh, could be right. Did put some in a large planter to watch a little more closely!! Actually mostly dug them up and left them mangled--that is why I think maybe armadillos are also involved.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Will do Marion! Oh I'm getting getty with excitement! Kathy came to see me and you are too! You better plan to spend the night with me!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Could be turtles too. Did you see a drag line going from and to the beds?

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

That is why I am working out my schedule. Remember this is the time of year it starts getting really hectic with the pre festival activities. Necessary but brother they can get hectic.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Nope not turtles. Whatever did this actually dug them up and mangled them. Lots of little digging holes in that particular bed. I was getting so excited as it had really begain to take shape and was coming together like I envisioned. Well mostly still like the idea but definitely back to the drawing board.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm thinking that it might be raccoons or armadillos too... I have a bunch of squirrels around here, and they never seem to bother my plants like that... could be something else, I don't know...
Marion, have you checked with your county extension agency to ask about varmints that would do things like your describing?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Then my bet it was an armadillo.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Not yet BJ but I do know I have had trouble before with armadillos digging up my daylilies. There are alot of grubs around here and I think that is what they are going for.
Next door neighbor has killed several even though it is not allowed to use a gun! He lives by his own rules you can be assured!!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Wonder what armadillo tastes like in a stew?

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

So glad to hear that you ladies are supporting our Michigan businesses. Not long ago my Red Hat group made a trip to Chelsea, Mi where the Jiffy factory is located. This small factory (350 workers) is the only Jiffy factory in the country. They make lots of things other than corn muffin mix but that is still their biggest seller. We toured the factory and everyone was so nice, and then we got to choose one of their products to take home. They put out a recipe booklet that has the best home made goodies in it. Their pie crust mix is the best I have found. I make terrible pie crust unless I use this mix. Tastes just like my Mom use to make!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone. Wow, so much going on. Everyone getting plants, and peafowl!
Thanks to everyone generosity, I think we will all have a nice garden this year!
Thanks Sisitah's!!!
Marion, You may have a skunk digging also. They like to dig for bugs and such! I would try placing like a small picket fence around the area, to protect it a little bit?
Ladies be good, stay warm, and be safe.
LK

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't think I've seen a Jiffy pie crust mix... but I'll look for it, because I can't make a decent pie crust either... thus, no pies made here... Don will have a whole new respect for me if I can make him a pie.

Another FYI... I'm trying my best to brainstorm and get ready for winter sowing... (been picking Deborah's brain for months now, she'll be so proud of me)... I've been trying to come up with a way to have separate little greenhouses for some of my seeds... rather than scatter them in a flat, and thin them out.
So, this is what I've come up with... Walmart has these little 5oz plastic cups, 80ct for $1.87. Plus, we do drink an awful lot of bottled water, and I've been eyeing them for quite some time now, just knowing there was a way to repurpose them. I found that if I cut them in half, at the curve in the middle, they make two domes over the little 5oz cups... the bottom section of the bottle slips inside pretty snuggly... but the top part of the bottle has to be taped in place. I've also found that the blue painter's tape weathers well.
Just passing this along... I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it... but I do love it when I get one of those "light bulb" moments.

great idea BJ, when is it December 21st right. When we can start the winter sowing. I am going to build a green house out of cattle panels and visqueen (sp?) I just made one yesterday with a tarp for some chickens.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I think here in our area December might be a bit early... I'm thinking more like Jan or Feb...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Gosh can not remember where I read it, but it was something about a moon faze is when to start. Maybe it was the winter solstice. I remember thinking oh yea just a few days before Christmas.

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

I like your idea BJ, I've been saving all of my plastic containers, butter, cottage cheese, coffee anything and everything plastic for my winter sowing. But I just found out, Rick is going to build me a temp green house, then later down the line I'll get a real green house

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Yeaaaaaaaaaaa Rick, with my plans you could build one that is 8 ft deep by 8 ft wide and about 7 foot tall for just under 125 dollars. It would depend on how much the cover material would cost. An added cost would be a fan and windows.

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, I'm going really simple for now. You see anything that we build here, if it's not attached to the house we have to leave it behind if and when we move. Rick has claimed the back of the house for storage for his "junk" hee hee

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

BJ that's not only a good idea IT"S A BRILLANT ONE! Waahoo!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Tina, yep ws after winter solace when the days start to get longer again. I usually start in Jan after I've put up all my Christmas decorations.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Nice idea BJ, thanks for sharing!!!
Cindy, nice to hear your getting a greenhouse, temp or not, it will be nice!
LK

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

And, here's some of the other things I've saved ... these are containers that we usually throw away anyway, and we do eat a lot of these food items... So, I get a lot of them.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm trying, really I am... Deborah !!!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

All of those will work perfectly, BJ!

Lind K are you going to winter sow seeds too? Who of our other sistahs and nieces are going to winter sow seeds?

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

This will be my first year to winter sow... I just hope I get it right.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I think I might try it, I have more reading to do, it looks like, so I will go searching DG for more info. Do you have the links for it? Or can you post it here for us all to read???
LK

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I am this will be my first year also. i am only going to do a few seeds of EVERYTHING I have just to see if it really does work.

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Someone posted this site somewhere, it has been very helpful for me.

I have a House season on DVD from the library that I’m waiting to find time to watch, I love that show, though I love NCIS more. I’m a big fan of Law and Order too, and that’s 60% of what I watch when I have cable. What not to wear and Mythbusters are the other two that spring instantly to mind.

Deborah, if you’re interested in what armadillo tastes like check out this thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/911439/

Janice, I love their blueberry muffins, but their cornbread is way too sweet for me.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Again... I'm going to experiment also, Tia...
I'm going to winter sow about half of each variety... and I'll start half in the "shelf greenhouse" I built a few weeks ago... if Don gets the florescent light in there for me in time.
It will be interesting to see which method does the best.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Laura... Jiffy cornbread is very sweet... that's why I only use it in that casserole. It's the only cornbread mix that actually makes the casserole taste right.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

BJ, that makes sense.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Good to see you online Laura. How you doing today? Sound perkier.

Yeap, I really like House--he is so bad he is good!! My sister likes NCIS. To each his own I guess. How is the weather there. Getting really dry here infact having to water today. Everything is wilting and I don't want to lose any of my plants.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

My throat is barely sore and I'm looking forward to getting our settlement check.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Linda K, there's a whole forum on winter sowing. Plus there's a sticky at the top that's helpful too. If you run in to any problems or have questions not answered there maybe I can help you find the answers. This will be my third year so I'm still sort of new at it too. But I do know you get a lot of seedlings started with health root systems this way.
Here's the forum.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coldsow/all/

BJ what casserole do you use jiffy in?

Judy gave me her tuna casserole that her family goobles down. Mine feel in love with it too! I just never thought I'd like hot tuna from a can but believe you me it is wonderful and was a hit at my house too. I used toll house crackers crumbed on top.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

I got gas for $2.67 yesterday. :O)

It was $2.77 a gallon, but our grocery has a 10 cent off if you buy enough to qualify. Not a problem!!

Other prices I've seen are $2.72 and $2.74.

I looked for House last night and didn't see it listed. Looks like it will be on tonight.

I'm a fan of all the Law and Orders and all the CSIs. I love TIVO. ^_^
