2nd.DG Victorian Santa Workshop - Now the fun begins..#4

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm glad you did! Betty. I'll send you money for the extra one and now I can make one for me. I was going to give mine to my mama anyway.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

1Anjl, we paid the bag fee when we flew to Canada in August but I thought I had read online and in the paper it has been discontinued. Odd. I bet the dolls you were mentioning are beautiful. Would you take pictures to show us?

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I'll try to get a pix and post here tomorrow they ARE beautiful!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh thank you. I am sure they are.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Anjil and Marion!

I finally got my Santa clothing cut out......if I can remember how to fill the bobbin on Mom's sewing machine I finish getting it together tonight!!!! It has taken long enough.....this is the hard part for me....I don't think the rest of it will give me too much trouble...we will see!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Trisha, we will be "experimenting" together. I have a new machine and still learning how to it works. They have changed so much since my last one!!!!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

In my case I do so little sewing lately that I forget from one time to the next.....of course with my memory that doesn't have to be very long...lol..!

Morning..waving...on the run..I teach this santa class today..should only have maybe 8, the other 6 or 7 will come next week and then the following about 12...

So best run...much to do..lol...

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Sure everyone has thought of this, but I decided to cover my stand in fabric, so that if his robe isn't hanging just right, it is still okay. I actually used white glue on the top. Just smeared it around and used hot glue on the edge and undermeath to really secure it. I am also going to cover the bottom of the stand in green felt, just to finish it off.

One other thing that I found is that putting my gathering thread in my machine didn't for work me. It worked much better when I put the gathering thread in by hand. Also, on the sleeve by the wrist, I left my needle in with a length of thread. Once I got the sleeve on the arm, I couldn't get it to gather any tighter, by took the thread and wrapped around the fabric and it pulled it nice and tight around the wrist. I am going to have something on his arm, so you will never see the thread.

Sorry, thought I had said the gathering was done by hand...thanks Shuggins..shucks never ever thought of covering the stand..great idea...I usually put those little round pads that you purchase at the Dollar Store for underneath so it doesn't scratch...

See how well we're doing...all have ideas of their own and how fantastic that is...we all can lear..looks as though you are well underway..good for you..

Anjl said that she would now ship her Santa so not sure if you want me to continue in this method..still didn't do the blast group d-mail..have students in at any minute so haven't time as I really struggle with them and half don't go through..

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I use button thread to gather, it's a lot stronger and WONT break! I learned this years ago when learning how to dress animal dolls using squares of fabric!
I think I'm going to split the robe up the middle and put a under dress beneath, then trim the front of the robe with gold trim!

Got the girls to take photo to make it more visible the way we do the beard/hair..about 5 or 6 photo posts to do

Again, cut 1" of the braid for hair

Fold the remaining piece in half and cut...

Slightly pull on the piece of braid and it will show you 2 pieces of string..just remove them and throw away

gently working from to to bottom of the piece, gently and slowly pull so that you are increasing the width

working your way down the piece

The girls didn't enjoy this part because they wanted it done instantly..takes time to widden a bit from top to bottom then start again at the top until correct width is obtained..

these girls ARE NOT CRAFTERS...only time they do crafts is once a year when we get together...so funny, some had difficulties gathering the stitch line, thank goodness I didn't leave the sewing to them today..lol

Betty, What a fun workshope, The ladies sure look like they are enjoying themselves.
...cute, glad you did the sewing for them too.

Shuggins, Great idea with convering the base.

Ok. to help with working the beard, place it on your knee and then pressed up against the table.
Very helpful to work the beard with both hands.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

The girls are enjoying themselves, that's really fun. Now that I see the finished results I think I'll work on mine more tomorrow, especially if it's windy again. I can't stand wind.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, if the beard is all used on the one face, what do we use for the extra small one? Do you have more of the hair for sale, or can you give us a web site to order from?
Thanks
LK

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Me, too, Betty! I was wondering that, too! I may have some blond hair that I bought for dolls a couple of years ago, I suppose that'll work!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Aren't we going to cut some of the beard off on the next lesson? We could use what we cut off?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Anyone know where we can get more hair?
LK

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Hobby Lobby might have it, that's where I got it for my dolls! Go on line, you can order it, if they have it!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I found some on--- crafts 4 me--- for $3.99 a yd. I didn't check to see what the limit for retail buying would be. They have all colors!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the link, I will go check it out.

you should have enough from what you cut off the bottom to do the little one if you work the strands properly...

Linda Kay, did you get your pkg?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty...Betty...Betty......

Got your package yesterday. It was NOT was I was expecting!
Please let me know how much I owe you for postage and materials???
So--ladies--all of a sudden I also now have a Santa to do, and I am NOT mentally prepared.
Oh, I have been reading all the steps and such, but not thinking I would have to do it. Now I have to go back and re-read what piece gets sewed to what.....the rest should not be too difficult.

I am sure I will do OK--being the resourceful kind and also the crafty kind....and if I improvise at some step, if the end product will be the same--what does it matter?

Betty, as far as doing the beard---does it HAVE to be curly? I ask, because I have some long, white REAL rabbit fur that could be used, but it won't be wavy. Your thoughts?

AND--Betty--thank you for the surprise! When I have made it--i will post a picture for sure.

Gita

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh Gita, so glad you can join in the fun. I think the rabbit fur would really good! if you do that Please do post pictures for us!!!! We definitely want to see new ideas
