Just smeared it around and used hot glue on the edge and undermeath to really secure it. I am also going to cover the bottom of the stand in green felt, just to finish it off.

One other thing that I found is that putting my gathering thread in my machine didn't for work me. It worked much better when I put the gathering thread in by hand. Also, on the sleeve by the wrist, I left my needle in with a length of thread. Once I got the sleeve on the arm, I couldn't get it to gather any tighter, by took the thread and wrapped around the fabric and it pulled it nice and tight around the wrist. I am going to have something on his arm, so you will never see the thread.
