Travel safe Lingernot! Thanks for being such a good host Pegi!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Weather's perfect for a cool journey. Yep, you're one great hostess to Lingernot, Pegi.

Yes, rain is generally a bit part of our weather pattern here in the Puget Sound area. But lately we have had temps in the low '60s and high 50's and sunny skies. It's been beautiful. Very, very strangely beautiful.
No worries, though. Even if we get rain, we can show him a good time. We don't let the rain stop us up here. If we did, we'd never leave our homes during the late fall, winter, and spring!

I hope Lingernot doesn't run into more problems, but you know how the post office works. I enjoyed having him here although we didn't get to do much. Pixydish has some great places around her yard for Lingernot to visit and I know she will show him a wonderful time

Hi there Chester, you are so cute. What a happy home you have now with lots of hugs and snuggles.

A big Northwest Hello to all from Lingernot! He arrived on Halloween just in time to help my son carve a few pumpkins. This was a good way to get him a little accustomed to how we do things around here, and to acclimate to the weather. He was so warm at his previous location, and it's pretty much a normal fall around here right now. We've got weather in the mid '50s with drizzle and grey skies.

Lingernot helped Andrew decorate his area for a small party with friends. There will be a campfire, music, and plenty of food. I'm not sure if Lingernot will attend as apparently he is afraid of fire.

Thumbnail by

I could not find Lingernot for the longest time last night! I figured he was somewhere with my gnome clan, but I finally found him staring at the firepit. The party was over and the fire was out, but there was still smoke coming up. He told me he was trying to get over his fear of campfires - something about a bad experience when he was younger. So sad. I asked where he was during the party, but he just shuddered. He chose to spend the night in his traveling box. I think the constant change of scenery must be getting the better of him, or else maybe he was just suffering from jetlag. I felt the next day would be better.

Today was a better day! He was up early and ready to greet the clan. I had plenty of work to do in the greenhouse today so he started off there, greeting the greenhouse gnome. Gerhardt is German and speaks little English, but he and Lingernot got along just fine. He was able to show Lingernot around the greenhouse which is where the tropicals are kept during the winter. Lingernot was pleased that the greenhouse stayed warm enough. He is a bit cold up here.

Thumbnail by

After his greenhouse tour, Gerhardt introduced him to Hans and Franz. I had warned them not to try to get Lingernot in trouble, but I fear they did not listen. Those rocks are slippery. Fortunately, it appears that Lingernot is too smart to fall for their tricks. There is a lot of activity around the pond this time of year and Lingernot was really interested.

Thumbnail by

He wanted his photo taken with the fish and was horrified to hear that the netting had to be placed over their swimming area due to herons. I thought he looked a bit scared of the fish because they are big enough to eat him, but he said the shivering was entirely due to being cold. I take him at his word. He insisted I post this photo, even though it's not very good.

Toward the edge of the pond Heinrich was waiting to show him around. Heinrich is one of the patriarchs of the clan and was waiting to take him under his wing. He is show here showing Lingernot some eggs from a special kind of bird that lives in the garden. I've never seen the bird myself, but the eggs do show up here and there and when they do, the gnomes take special care of them. I've asked Heinrich to explain to me about the birds on numerous occasions but he just pretends not to understand.

Thumbnail by

Heinrich has introduced Lingernot to Dieter, who is always fishing at the pond. Lingernot wants to learn how to fish and I hope that Dieter will not be selfish about it. He has a thing about stockpiling fish. I fear Dieter led Lingernot on about how he was trying to catch some of the koi. Lingernot was thinking that Dieter was quite the man-gnome going for those huge fish until Father Heinrich caught on to what Dieter was doing. Dieter will be working in the compost pile tomorrow. I am glad that Father Heinrich takes care of these little things because I simply do not have the time.

Onward to the next part of the garden. Schmidt and Gunter are in charge of the gardens around my workshop and my DH's shed. They took a break from their work to meet and entertain Lingernot. Schmidt and Gunter are serious garden gnomes. They are at work in the garden all the time. In fact, I've never seen them take a break. Lingernot is a little bit in awe of them, I believe. Frankly, I think he could teach them a thing or two about balance. It's nice that he is traveling a bit. They never leave the garden and the other gnomes find them curiously hard to relate to.

Thumbnail by

Lingernot has finally made it to the gnome village. Poor Lingernot. We always learn so much from the places we visit. He has learned that he is not as small as he thought he was. There is just no way that he will be able to spend the night with any of my gnomes in the village. He is to them as Gullivar was to the Lilliputians. But he enjoyed seeing the village anyway and made a few stops at some of the houses. I asked him to discreetly save his questions about the houses and people until later so as not to hurt anyone's feelings.

Thumbnail by

He requested I take his photo by the rock. You can see that the owner of this house is keeping a bit of distance from Lingernot. He's not really afraid of him, but he is concerned about being stepped on accidentally.

Thumbnail by

Lingernot refused to approach these three. They were having a lively visit and he did not want to intrude on their fun. Also, they are Italian and he could not understand a word they were saying. They never even noticed him. These gnomes sort of keep to themselves. Their home is on the outskirts of the village and, while friendly as can be and hard workers, they really have different habits and different ways of doing things. I believe their ancestors were cave dwellers and this explains their extremely white skin. Through sign language they have told me they moved to the Pacific Northwest because they heard that we never get enough sun to matter. Their skin would be safe here. So far, that has been true. Their home is under a huge big leaf maple tree so even in the summertime, they are in the shade. I assigned them to the garden underneath that tree so they never have to work in the sun. They are very musical and on a quiet day you can hear them singing while they work.

Thumbnail by

Our next stop was the carnivorous plant bog. (Heinrich had to get back to his business so I took a break from working in the greenhouse to show Lingernot the rest of the garden and introduce him around.)
Lingernot was fascinated by these plants but took a lot encouragement before he approached them. For some reason, he thought they might try to eat him! How old is this gnome? I didn't think I needed to explain to him that these plants eat bugs, not gnomes. Apparently I was wrong. Is he particularly young? I wanted to ask his age but didn't want to insult him.

Thumbnail by

Second to the last stop is the little garden just outside the office door. The hostas are going dormant for the season, but I wanted Lingernot to meet our resident gargoyle, Curmudgeon. He guards the house from evil spirits and does a really good job of it, too! His bark is worse than his bite. Interestingly, Lingernot was not worried about him at all. You can see that one of my gnomes, Samuel, who works in the larger hosta bed, stays well clear of Curmudgeon but Lingernot had a nice conversation right off the bat!

Thumbnail by

Our last stop is Samuel's cyclamen bed. He is so happy there and fall is his favorite time of year because of the cyclamen. He has been working hard finding baby plants and moving them around to new locations. Lingernot wanted to know if he could sleep in the cyclamen bed, but I convinced him that he did not really want to sleep outside here in this weather. He would awaken cranky and sore.

Tomorrow is another day. It's so nasty outside I don't know if we'll get to go sailing but we'll do something fun.

Oh, sailing....that sounds like fun. Beautiful pictures Pixy, lovely garden. I can see your gnome clan has given Lingernot a great PNW welcome.

To cute.
I thought I was on the travel list? Oh well maybe next time.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Your garden and gnomes are looking great this year Pixy! I am sure the weather is starting to get dicey up there, glad you changed Lingernot's plans of staying outside. The last thing we need is a sick gnome on our hands. Your clan is used to the weather up there.

Your fish are looking fine and the water clear. Guess your AquaScape system is still doing it's job. We did have to replace a pump this year but we got four years out of it running 24 / 7 so that is pretty good in my book.
I look forward to what new adventures you will be doing with Lingernot today...
Sheila_FW

Tills, you should go back to the original aroids list and see if your name is on it.
Hi Shiela - yep the weather is starting to get a bit dicey with wind and rain. Time to start protecting the plants. I'm sure the gnomes are on top of it.
BTW, I don't have an aquascape system in the pond. It's just a series of filters, including the waterfall filter. But, I, too, had to replace my pump, but I went ahead and bought a Tsurumi pump and it's been working fine. Took a long time for the pond to get clear this year because it took so long for the weather to warm up. The gnomes were kept busy keeping it clear of algea!

So many leaves fell last night! The gnomes are busy gathering today.

I'm so happy to hear Lingernot is having such a wonderful time. Such a great garden to visit and a GH too. I think he isn't going to want to leave Pixydish since her clan is showing him a great time. I tried to get him to meet my girls, Molly-Bea and Samantha (doggies), but I think he was a little afraid of Samantha (Sami) because she is so full of piss and vinegar. Have a great time little man and keep us posted.
