Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

My late DMIL was from Mississippi and had a way of saying 'children' that sounded like 'cheerdrens'. I miss her.

Yep, Jaye, if'n two arms flapp'n at once it could happen!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Then Marion, I for one, am glad you are a Mrs. Wouldn't want to scratch your chalkboard.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Duh! Explain Deborah. I am slow tonight. Tired I guess.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL! Never heard that one before. Deborah, you're full of 'em! Or full of it????

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Nowadays I hear.. my "chaild" more than "cheedlin"

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Marion, run your fingernails down a chalkboard and see what it can do to your spine.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

IT will grit on your last nerve! LOL

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Ladies, I love you all so much. I really do. But I'm pooped from working outside today. Gonna zone out in front of the tv or a little while then off to bed. Hope everyone has a good evening and I'll see you in the morning.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Night LK..night Debra..

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

No, you just been in the sun too long today, sweetie. And yes, Debra, you got that right. And you a nut too!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

I won't be far behind tonight. I am tired but again it is a really good tired. All the pictures of the houses and decorating has gotten me motivated to getting back to getting this place finished. Thanks ladies!!! Just a gajillion ideas running through my brain now.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh is that what it is? I thought I was losing it for sure. Whee do I feel better now.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I've had a big day too... so, I think I'll go get horizontal and watch a little tv till I fall asleep too.

Night everyone.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Well I know Deborah will be staying up late again.
I'll hang in here till my eyes say no more!!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Yeppers, me too. Good nite my sistahs. I'll probably stay up for the next crew of sistahs, ya just never know.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Rest well BJ and Marion, see y'all tomorrow.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Okay you two, I need some suggestions for borders other than the usual "monkey" or "bear" grass that is used.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Count me out Marion. I don't do borders.. unless it's wood :D
Now in the spring I used marigolds for borders. Nothing perennial.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

I don't usually do a plant border either but was curious about what could be used. May stick with my original idea of using the stone blocks in the terra cotta to match the brick color of the house. Not sure--may even go back to landscaping timbers. They are hard to beat!! Just my brain thinking out loud.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Where are the borders? You want perennial or annuals? Sun or shade? Around that grouping of trees in the pic you posted? Going around in a circle or kidney shape? My suggestion for a shady perennial border, is a border grouping mix, letting your hostas and other foliage plants do alot of the work for you. Say a group of Japanese Forest Grass in a clump( 3), followed by a different textured leaf plant, put a break on the edge with a native azalea, with a group of 3 Carex in front of the azalea.. Mixing the textures and colors until the border is complete. Cut into the edges with a straight spade filling the edge with mulch and letting the lawn grow up to it.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

For the front of the house, we use pavers for borders and it also acts as a walkway.
Keep on going Deborah, I'm getting ideas..

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I haven't gotten that far with thinking for sure. I like what you are suggestion. Grass kept out? What is grass? None here except in back area off decks. To shaded and I have been leaving the leaves to keep the soil from washing away so badly when it rains.

The shape is irregular for sure. It is oblong and sort of kidney shaped--if you are very imaginative. Oh that right you saw the picture I posted a while back.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

I will have 7 Encore azaleas in the group running from end to end in a random pattern. The color is Autumn Sunset I think will need to double check on that. There are some palmetto that I wanted left as I like the texture of the leaves with the other plants. Have some fern to set out and Soloman's Seal. That's it so far but always open to suggestions. When I finish getting the plants in their homes, I will take another picture so you can see better the idea that is floating into reality.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Front of the house, I'd use color. Like Jaye said with the marigolds, I'd use groupings of bronze leaved begonias massed out. They'll be in constant bloom from March until Thanksgiving. If they die off fter that the cold of winter, so what, you in the warm house and won't know anyway.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Isn't it to late to put out begonias? Great idea for next year tho--writing it down in my idea book for sure.

Sorry, no can do marigold here!!! I would never stop sneezing and have headaches to boot.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmm.... my begonias are on their last legs Marion.
Of course don't plant anything that will just irritate you!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

First then I noticed from that picture is that area is deep and wide. You need a meandering designated path through out so you can check on butterflies, dead head blooms or collect seeds. Think about heights along that path to get to your bench, even a path like a train track going all through it. No grass, tahts just fine too. I like the look of a brown out effect. The foliage and plants will draw the eye to the garden.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh believe me it is meandering, LOL, Deborah!! Son did relocate a few azaleas due to tree roots. I usually have the bronze leaf Begonias in some of my containers but have never tried then in the ground. Noted the idea in my book for next year.

Think I am going to wait a little until I see what Kanida has to offer at the open house. Thanks for any and all suggestions. I now have to get my covered swing set repaired as it is definitely the focal point at the one end of that bed.

Oh my, we are getting a hard rain.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

well y'all have been busy lil beavers I see.

the guys are watching football so I ran of to the bedroom and sat on the bed working on foiling the glass pieces.
all done and ready for soldering...tomorrow though....should have gotten the laptop out and set it up in there to chit chat wtih ya while I worked ..DUH

Dang who's goin snipe hunting???? pillar case and flashlight good and ya know to call softly here snipe here snipe while the others go to scare them out of the woods or weeds sending the over to your open pillar case. ROFLMAO

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

....but of course!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

of course for the snipes or being busy beavers this evening here LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Deborah, that's in my planning too, to have tracks laid out to all my garden beds or islands.
Talk of meandering paths.. I think mine will be more like a maize or labyrinth!
But I love the idea of guests discovering something only through taking those walk. . One can't stand on one spot and expect to take in all that's planted here.
I don't follow any rules. Just call it the "plop method" depending too of course on shade. Kel calls my garden a complex one!!
It's so complex that my garden help rather dig holes and plant then cut my grass!!!

Hi Phyllis!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Both

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Phyllis we missed you up there a while back! Take step by step pictures cause you know you are goin' have to explain to us what you are doing, how you did it, and most definiately pics when you are finished .

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

That sounds like the best way to do paths Jaye, plant then try to connect everything with paths. Hummm, gives me an idea. Shucks, most of the paths were here when we bought the place. May put a few more twist in them tho.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Hey Jaye feeling better now?

Sorry Deb was foiling and watch TV while the guys watch football Dallas is beating green bay ...hahahahaha

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Definitely off to bed this time! Having trouble seeing the monitor and cat wants to help me type. Sleep well everyone and chat with you tomorrow.
