Beautiful blooms Placenciarita! This is my first year with Thryallis. Can you tell me if yours overwinters outside? Or in?

podster, thanks. They are tender, you will have to take them in. I experimented with them and left a few out, but they died.
I have left a few Brugmanesias out for a couple of years now, planted on the east side of my house and they came back and bloomed their little heads off.

From reading, I thought as much. It is pretty and smells delicately wonderful so I will go the extra effort to make room for it.

In spite of my best intentions, I did not manage to put the brugs in ground this summer. I need to whack them back and stuff them in somewhere. Perhaps next spring in ground.

I just bought a thryallis yesterday for my front bed. I didn't know they were that tender. Hopefully they will survive the winter in my warmer zone. How long is their bloom season?

Red Oak, TX

podster, I seem to remember posting their first blooms in August and they are still blooming now.
do you know what these are?

In 9a, you are on the border. I would mulch the roots heavily for this winter. From the reading I've done, once it is established, it will bloom the summer thru. Mine is small ~ started from seed. I have recently seen this plant in the WM garden centers and wondered why as it is late in season and won't overwinter here.

I thought it had a long bloom season and that is why I bought it. I need to replace the mulch in my beds. I have been moving stuff lately and the existing mulch is practically gone in places.

Placenciarita ~ I don't recognize those lovely blooms. Nor the foliage but love a challenge. Let's see if we can figure this one out! LOL

phughes, sorry I got the names wrong, too much sinus med. and coffee.
podster, the plant reminds me of a little hibiscus plant, with fuzzy leaves.

I was thinking it looked like a type of hisbicus but couldn't tell how big the flowers were.

Is it possibly this?

Good morning , phughes, podster. I finally ID the plant, it is a Musk Mallow (Abelmoschus moschatus).
This is Red Firespike, it is hardy in my area.

I am delighted to know the Firespike is hardy. I have a red and it is easy to root. I have a couple to bring in overwinter just in case. Mine didn't start blooming till late in season. Is that normal? The butterflies and hummers love it! Have you seen the purple one?

Your plant ID is vaguely familiar... I'm off to see why.

Red Oak, TX

podster, yes it is normal for it to bloom late in the season. I have them in the shade and all day sun, they seem to like the shady area better.
I have a little purple firespike, and I have seen a few beautiful pictures of them. I think that they are even prettier than the red ones.

I love the purple. The red blooms late summer and the purple blooms early spring. My purple has done much better than my red, but that's probably because I have the purple in the ground and the red in a pot. I got about a four inch plant last year on ebay really cheap (like under $3) and this year it went nuts and is already almost to the rooftop of my house.

Rita your red is gorgeous. Do you find that the hummingbirds love it? I had my red toward the very back of my patio next to the french door leading into the house, and a hummingbird came inside the patio while I was sitting in my rocker one day and visited the fire spike. It was so neat. I've never had one come up that close.

thought I posted a picture a while ago. Oops This is from early spring. It bloomed a long time; I was really surprised. My red has never done that. I need to find a spot to place the red in the ground I guess.

I just got back from a trip to Austin and while there I went to a nursery, "The Natural Gardener" off of Bee's Cave and they had a stand of the purple firespike and it was very impressive. I would love to plant some of these.

It most definitely performs better in ground and my soil is not that great. It also doesn't show much water deprivation. Many plants wilt severely when needing moisture. I didn't see much of that with the firespike. I will also put some plants in shade next spring. I was nervous about it overwintering and have rooted some pieces of red. Bobyrd ~ if the inground plant returns in spring (and the cuttings make it thru the winter ~lol ) I will glady share some red. Phughes, your purple is lovely and next spring I will add one of those.

This thread is too long for my possum bell phone connection. Would someone with a pretty fall photo please give us a fresh thread? I'd give you a virtual hug... 8 )

Hi Htop! Thanks for the link to the new thread. How did your Malabar spinach do? Did you eat any?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Your welcome. The spinach did great and we ate a lot. Yummy and good for us.

Hey bobyrd, the Natural Garden is AWESOME! Last time we went I was so in awe of their gigantic heaps of soil and compost. I bought every :bee, butterfly, bird: plant they had, it's a great place.
