Canna orange punch, always blooming
Fall Blooms & Color
I was at a Master Gardener's sale for my area this weekend and the speaker recommended the yellow cestrum. She said it was one of the most carefree plants she had. Can someone familiar with this plant in Texas tell me the best way to care for it? I planted it in an area where it will be in almost full sun, with the best drainage I can manage with my clay based soil.(it's in a raised bed)thanks nancy
Bananna ~ wait till the foilage has died and turned yellow. The foliage is how it stores nutrients for next years blooms.
Cocoa ~ I like the "iron tree". Looking forward to next summers' view.
I love beauty berries too. I had heard that they were great for attracting birds. I had to take down my bird feeders in August (rats in the neighborhood) and lost all my birds that attended the feeders. But, just tonight, I had two mockingbirds visit my beauty berries. Unusual because I don't normally have a lot of mockingbirds.
I believe that's an American Lady. I have a big patch of Frostweed by the dry creek and it's been a big bee and butterfly magnet since it started blooming. I've also got a couple of Frostweed in the yard, but most of the butterflies just head out there where there's tons of those plants blooming away. It's really amazing! The bees buzzing you can hear before you even get close.
Wow, am I glad to see the asters! I've been wondering when mine would start blooming. I just noticed yesterday that it is covered with buds. But none have opened yet.
Linda, I sure agree. I have frostweed for the first time this year (from Josephine last fall). I can't belieeeeeeeve how many bees and butterflies they attract. Mine are right next to a butterfly bush. That whole area is just covered with activity.
Yes, the Frostweed is doing a super job of feeding all of the fall insects, here and at the fielder house too.
I thought Frostweed needed shade. How is it next to butterfly bush? I am confused as usual.
Frostweed works great in shade or sun, very versatile.
I didn't know it would grow in shade, Anna, so mine's in one of my sunniest spots. I'm glad to know, though, so thanks, Josephine. Mine needs moved, and that gives me more options.
Teacup, it seems as if you did everything right already. I have been growing the cestrum for a few years now. I have both the yellow and the orange. One is growing in half day sun and the other is in full sun. The one growing in full sun seems to grow faster than the other, but both have been blooming profusly since spring. They will thrive with very little care.
Sheila, if you have a couple of extra little frostweeds, that would be great. Easier than moving these big guys I have. I did not know they got so big!
Does anyone here grow the red cestrum? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/92086/ Someone sent me two last spring, and I just love the little red flowers. I was just wondering if there was anything special I should do for them.
Thanks for the compliments, I'm certainly enjoying everyone's snapshots.
I love Beautyberry and will get a classic purple next time I see one. There will be Variegated Beautyberry for sale at the SFA plant sale. As Dawn Stover describes it: "This lovely selection is known for it's stable, variegated foilage and tolerance to full sun. Berries are white and tend to dissappear into the foliage, but it's absolutely worth growing despite this."
I wasn't planning on getting one, but I just may. (This is how I go overboard)
