Garden Photos - Part 36
Pretty, Laurel! So that's what a maypop looks like! I'm glad to see one! Are those wild sunflowers a heliopsis? That grasshopper looks like the kind that used to terrorize me when I was a kid. They seemed as big as I was and they'd leap on you mercilessly. Ugh. Still haven't gotten over it! LOL
Gosh, Louise, I didn't know you'd never seen a maypop. There are many tropical, non-hardy types that you might like to consider for FL, but mine are hardy. I'd be glad to send you root cuttings. Here is a photo of the fruit. My maypops are the 'incarnata' variety. Some folks turn their nose up at these because they are wild and not exotic cultivars. I ate one today and it was delish!
The sunflowers are helianthus and there are lots of regional varieties. They just do their own thing. I wake up in the morning and look out the window to the view. Too much to do to have high maintenance plants.

ok Laurel you have to give me the low down on how to do a root cutting.... that is something I have no clue about
Wonderful pics, red! You certainly understand the benefits of good lighting. Great to wake up to these.
RC that first pic is my favorite - very pretty.
Good morning. Yes, I agree, RC's photos always have that artistic touch.
Allison, this year maypops popped up where we tilled and broke up roots in the spring. So, I dug roots early that had white shoots coming off them and potted them up. The roots go down about 6"-8" and then travel horizontally like wisteria or trumpet vine. The shoots were easy to grow. Meanwhile, I tried to germinate seed with no luck. Then I read here at DG that people give up and dump the seed in the compost to find it germinate a year or two later.

Great shots, Shelly.
