Deb - I got my Oxblood lilies from yuccado.com (they have the lowest prices). You can also get them from Plant Delights or Brent and Becky's. They need full sun in the winter and spring (when the foliage is growing) and well drained soil in summer when they are dormant - but they are very easy to grow.
blooming in september
Thanks, Tom.
Tom,
I think I'll follow your lead with putting my corkscrew in the garage this winter.
DebinSC, you're a little warmer than me and that 5 degrees in the winter can make it or break it so I admire your bravery with the corkscrew. I'll be very interested to see how it does. Good luck!
Barbara
Barbara: I didn't realize there would be that much difference within our zone. Obviously, better safe that sorry! I'll let you know if my experiment with the Corkscrew has a good result, or turns out to be just foolish on my part. :)
Chamthy: I love that Mexican Bush sage. I've had bad luck with it. Not sure why, but I still have one plant hanging on to life - just barely.
(Pretty Buckeye!)

(Gerber)
My spider lillies aren't blooming yet. They for some reason are later here on the coast than in Raleigh.
Love all the pictures and Tom need to bring me all his plants.LOL
Lavina
Deb - the key to growing Salvia leucantha is good drainage. I have mine planted next to the house where it gets full sun all day. I think being next to the house helps keep the roots from freezing in the winter and since it's partially under the eaves that keeps it from getting too wet. I've had Salvia leucantha and Salvia mexicana for 6 years now and they always come back. The S. leucantha is getting so big I had to pull some of it out this spring to keep it from taking over.
sweetbay - Bidens is one of my favorite fall flowers. It's so colorful and showy for a "weed".
Great photos, everyone. Thanks for sharing them.
Somewhere in his brain DH has this notion that Bidens is a "weed". *rolls eyes* I keep trying to disabuse him of that notion. I think Bidens is beautiful even before it blooms. The winter skeletons I don't like but the birds do, so I leave them up until spring.
the last one was a pindo palm
this is an empress tree in its third year. it needs to be pruned in te spring, because it is growing into the wax myrtle. i intended them to be close, but at the time i planted them i didn't realize i wouldn't be there to prune them to their desired shape. but anyways... im impressed. this tree seems to be less invasive in warmer climates than the colder climates like the mountains or somewhere like that
Trent, I can't imagine the Empress trees being any more invasive than they are at Riverbanks Zoo. Your grandparents have been lucky so far. The zoo has very rich soil, chock full of zoo doo, and perhaps that is why they are so invasive there. Walking under the canopy of the trees when they are in bloom is magnificent, they are so beautiful then.
There is also a whole forest of them along I-26 in the southern Lex county area.
i saw that forest. i thought it was nice, invasive or not... their soil is really gravely and clay ish. even the bananas there dont grow as well as the others do only feet away. maybe be not the best choice, but it was the fastest growing flowering tree i knew of... (they wanted fast growing and flowering things)
Sweetbay: I have toyed with the idea of planting Honorine Jobert for a few seasons
but chickened out. Do you find it easy to grow and do you have it in shade?
Tom: Thanks for the info re/Salvia Leucantha. I will try it again - I think it
got too much water where it was. Thanks. (Oh, and I ordered some Oxbloods from PDN.)
Trent: When you gonna get a new camera? :)
Deb
(c. alismatifolia, mostly)
Deb Honorine Jobert is easy to grow and spreads readily. I've got it planted in sandy topsoil on the east side of the house, so it gets sun until about 1 pm.
when i get money that i dont already have plans for! lol
Whoa, I love Argentine Skies. Is it really that sky blue color? .
Yes, it's "Carolina blue" :)
Oh wow, I am going to have to find that one.
