blooming in september

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' - it's pretty but I think I actually prefer the white/purple contrast of the species.

Tom- gorgeous photos as usual.

The Hedychiums are spectacular this year in the gardens at Plant Delights. I wish I could grow them that well.

I love the Fall blooming salvias too. How long have you had that S. mexicana? I tried to grow those last year but lost both varieties to the drought.

Love the butterflies:)

This is really a huge group of Zinnia flowers that don't have their stems very close for the camera. They have bloomed for a long time and look crisp and nice. I bought the seeds at Johnny's and started them in the spring. They are Benary Giants (orange) and they have not disappointed me in their display. In an outside circle with those plantings, I planted Lantana and the two look nice together. (The Lantana is not showing in this photo for some reason!)

One thing I love about fall is crisp colors. These 2 have bloomed off and on since spring but are looking so fresh now.

TomH: Is the Senna a sun lover? It looks like your location is in full sun and I would guess that it is. It's lovely and I want one.

Sweetbay: The Georgia aster is very pretty and I like asters rather than mums. Does it seed and could I get some next year?

Ardesia: That blue ginger is so gorgeous. Where did you get it?

Plant envy is what I have, y'all.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Sweetbay, I do love the color of the Georgia asters!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Shari - I have had the Salvia mexicana for 6 or 7 years now - I got it from Yucca Do (they have not offered it in a while though). It's planted next to the house in full sun. Tony Avent told me hardiness for S. mexicana is iffy below about 10F - I guess where mine is located is protected from extreme cold.

Hemophobic - the Senna corymbosa is in full sun (I don't think it would do well in shade). It's still in full bloom - here's a picture from earlier this week.

Passiflora morifolia. Flowers are small but it has attractive dark purple fruit (see lower right corner of picture). I didn't actually plant it this year but it volunteered.

Thanks, Tom. I suspected it was a sunlover, but I'll try to find a spot for it in my garden.

I've waited a long time for this one.

Deb I love the color of the Georgia asters too! Such a bright purple.

Hemophobic, yes, it does set seed. I'll collect some for you.

Tom your Senna corymbosa is something else. It's absolutely covered.

Shari I like the combination of Kniphofia and Salvia.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

These are blooming, but not in my garden. They're aross the road, growing in the cow pasture, twining around the rushes by the stream.
So wildflower, climbing vine, leaves similar to morning glory, growing near water. Can someone ID?

While I'm at it. This is blooming at the edge of the woods. I really should know what it is, but I've never noticed it before.
It's a shrub. The flowers are about 3/4" long and maybe 1/2" across. Very sweet scent. You can see the leaves here, too.
Would love to know what it is.

The shrub is Abelia.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh! Thanks, Sweetbay. I thought it would be some native plant, based on where it is, at the edge of the woods, but perhaps it's a planted one from when the street was "new". I'm tempted to go rescue it from its obscurity. ;->

Hedychium "Tahitian Flame"

I really like this one. It's a new one for me this year. It has a great fragrance and I like the stripey leaves.

Sweetbay: Thank you very much. Hope I'll have something next year to give you in return. Don't have anything in my swap list yet, as I just started tuning into DG several months ago, but I'm solidly hooked.

Smithfield, NC

Deb the vine is Climbing Boneset. It grows all over my place too; I just went out and looked at the leaves this morning and it's a match with your plant.

Deb and bordersandjacks -- lovely gingers.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Sweetbay! Great name btw, "Boneset".

I dug up Lantana 'Miss Huff' in spring 2007 because I was just tired of her. Guess what I just found today.

Isn't this cool? First, I have to explain I have this Halloween problem...

Anyways, it's a bromeliad called "Black Mystic." I'm in love!

That's kind of creepy looking. Good time of year for it.

Smithfield, NC

Bordersandjacks I love that plant!

It looks very Halloween.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Problem or not, LOL, that brom is way too cool.

I saw that one on Tropiflora's list recently and was really tempted; now I am sorry I didn't follow up on my instincts. Like I need another plant right??????

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Since we're at the end of this thread I'll share a few of the pictures I took yesterday morning.

This daylily came from CA this spring but is just now blooming. Last bloom on 'Star Asterisk'.

Celosia spicata, Wheat Celosia, 'Flamingo Feather' These reseed heavily for me if I let them but the seeds are easy to collect if I remember to do it.

I had forgotten about this Salvia. It needs to be moved.
