Violet Queen Zinnia with Great Spangled Fritillary
blooming in september
hooray! i found a tiny little bud on my night blooming cereus!!! and the senna bloomed today.... still waiting for the CP raffil ginger to open up... and i got Alocasia Borneo Giant in the mail today. im going to put the plumerias in the GH today they are pretty spindly and i ont want any more snapped branches like on the pudica earlier
I'd like to see what the Borneo Giant turns out like next year. I have a NOID which gets about 8 ft tall with huge leaves. Maybe a swap if they have a different look compared to each other. Fill in around them with smaller EE's etc.
do you think yours could be A. macrorrhizos or odora hybrid?
It could very well be a Alocasia odora, leaves are about the same and the flower stem looks dead on. I haven't seen a picture that is an exact match.
Nice butterfly pics, everyone! One butterfly I've had about enough of around here are the black swallowtails - their larvae have eaten almost all of my parsley. After letting a couple dozen of them mature I've now started picking eggs off the remaining leaves, but it's probably a lost cause.
It will be nice to get the rain from TS Hanna but not the wind. If we get 50mph gusts like they're predicting it's going to make a mess... oh, well.
Here's a pic of my Senna corymbosa bush. It's not quite in full bloom yet but I took a pic today anyway in case it gets a lot of wind damage. This gives you an idea of the overall growth habit. If you're into butterfly gardening, it's a good larval host for sulphurs - they like to eat the flowers most of all.
fantastic photos Tom.
I agree. It was frustrating last weekend to have them perch practically right next to me and not be able to focus on them for a pic.
I'l also definitely have to move my Senna corymbosa from where I planted it.
gulf fritillary
nice. how many skirts?
Tom, add the pictures of your senna to the plantfiles... they need more pictures of it
Chanthy, I am going to have to move my corymbosa also. Tom has an exquisite specimen there,
Sweetbay, good to see the Monarch. I've seen exactly 1 this summer.
Wonderful pictures everyone! Enjoyed them all.
Tom, I'm sure you take your corkscrew vine inside during the winter, don't you? Mine's in a pot. Wish it could stay in the ground.
Barbara
Enjoyed everyone's pictures, too.Chamthy, the caryopteris looks great! Glad you found it.
Ardesia: Well, it's beautiful, regardless!
Very cool! Beautiful!
While I was killing Chinese privet this morning I was stung by a wasp. OWWWWWWW!! My hand is still swollen and it feels like someone dropped a concrete block on it.
While I don't have anything nearly as cool as Ardesia's bat flower, I do have a cute little "volunteer" cardinal flower. Usually these are deep red, but this little cutey is orange. I found it while weeding and am training it along the miles of ugly field fencing that I own. It's in deep shade and I'm hoping it will bloom a bit more when it gets a little sun.
bordersandjacks- sorry to hear about your wasp sting. Ouch!@
Deb- that cleome pic is gorgeous! I need to sow some next year. sweetbay103 has some in her foundation bed that looks just perfect there. I've been very slack at sowing seeds.
sweetbay- that's a pefect picture of the TST on zinnia. Beautiful! The Lespedeza you gave me is starting to bloom.
I love that Bayse's Purple Sweetbay.
Chamthy, how large is your Cestrum parqui? I have one that looks almost identical and it is a descendant of one that was grown from a cutting that was brought from Rosemary Verey's garden years ago. I love it because it blooms all year with little care and when it gets tired looking I just whack it back into shape.
Jenny - Be careful!
