How did you pick your name?

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok I know I have been asked and I am sure others have too. How did you pick your name for DG? I thought this would be fun as your tell how you picked your name to tell you real name also that way we can put real names with your garden name.I will go first. Its really pretty simple. From the time we first got a computer I preached at my kids not to put there name, address etc on the computer. When I started getting into sites, icq etc I had to have a name.Well I love mystical things unicorns, pegasus, etc. My daughter had given me a beanie baby unicorn and its name was mystic. So Mystic was born.My real name is Peggy. Ok who's next?

Santa Barbara, CA

For a long time I was The Seedman around my parts and online with some fora but then I discovered that a commercial fellow was using the same and earlier on line than me. So rather than register as Seedman4z24, a moniker I'd never remember, I went with my first name Marsh and added the seed: Marshseed

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, when your husband is a Univ. of Tennessee graduate and die-hard/bleeds orange fan, and you've named your daughter after a recent, famous quarterback from the same school, what else could I call myself but GO VOLS?!?!?!?!

2004 Update. Well, I still shout "Go Vols" a lot during football and basketball season, but...I *did* finally ask Dave to change my name to Terry about a year ago. Which is my real name, unless you ask my mom, who will tell you that it's spelled with one "r" and an "i"

I'll go next....when I found dg and needed a user name I had just about drained my creative juices in the garden, so I just used the good 'ol intials and birth year, but now that I'm here I find new ideas, new techniques, new people who love the same things as me!!!!
I found you guys at the right time....Thanks for all the inspiration!!!

in a haste, i put MsJen, as in Mississippi Jen, but it kinda looks like Miss Jen.
every time i look at it i think geez, thats stuffy..as if im demanding respect or something. wish there was a way i could correct it...
dave, can ya help me?????
such is life. my real name is jennifer

Mine is pretty boring - vic, nickname for Vicki. Our email has a pretty cool story though. The first two letters of each of our childrens names followed by our the day of our anniversary. vic

Jen: How would you like it to be changed? Let me know and I'll do it.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

maybe change the s to a S? not that it makes that much difference, but it at least it looks like a state abbreviation.
youre the greatest dave!!!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I met my husband when I was 32 and really learned all over again what "smiln" was all about.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Awww, I always smiled when I saw one of Msjen's posts - I DID think of her as Ms. Jen, which is how I have taught my children to address our friends - Ms. Kim, Ms. Linda, etc. But it's nice to know the story behind it, and you'll always be Ms. Jen to me :)

Jen: It's done!

Dave

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I picked the name "Granny Lois" because my name is Lois and I'm a Granny as of recent years. You can see how terribly creative I am ....

Well actually it was an accident as far as how my name came about. I really wanted to be a "bloomin'idiot" but couldn't get it to work, and somehow I even managed to misspell "idiot" too. LOL!! But my real name is Ruby. So here I is an idit.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

"Horseshoe"...hmmm...don't make me say it. It'll make ya sniffle, or make ya say 'ahhhhh, how sweet'...or say 'ohhh, so touching', etc. And NO(!), I am not one who puts shoes on horses! And NO(!), I don't even ride horses...(am scared to death of them...'s'matter of fact one of my favorite horse jokes, that might clarify my fears, was recently on one of our joke pages! go figger!) But, alas...I enjoy hearing your names! (I just cain't figger out where "Dave" came up with his DG name!) ;>)

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

Horseshoe, I know where Dave got his DG name, from GrannyLois!!!!!!!! Ruby42 is pretty simple: I LOVE RUBIES and I am 42!(for a couple more weeks anyway) sue

markleysburg, PA(Zone 5a)

Hello I used somethig I knew noone else ever would[the name of the ambulance service I run with. My name is Shirley and yes I was named after you know who in 1937

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Eons ago in another lifetime, I drove tractor trailer from coast to coast. Because I was so short the "guys" decided that my handle on the CB should be reflective of that so they named me Munchkin... okay ... I know my name is showing as MzMunchken... just hold on.. don't get ahead of my story..... I was down in south Texas (McAllen) picking up a load of pickles to take to Chicago and had to spend a few days there and there was a guy that was offering truck lettering and artwork.. he was resonable so I figured.. what the heck.. He painted a little munchkin on the door and put my CB handle there... I really didn't pay attention to the spelling as I was in awed at the artwork... anyway.. the next day.. as I am closing the trailer doors to start my trip north I take a good look at the new art work adorning them and freak... YIKES.. MunchkEn not Munchkin... oh well.. too late now.. The Mz part came along once I got on line... as I was a married woman at that time I thought it would be cute to add the Mz part... so there ya have it... how I became MzMunchken... end of story....

This is so cool we are learning so much about our garden buddies. Funny how a name can say so much about us. No name is boring or stuffy and in many cases very unique. But if you think about it they all come back to something that is very close to us.Guess we all know where Dave and Trish got their names. lol

I love Callalilies and like several others managed to misspell it. When I first visited here, there weren't forums, just journals and trade lists. I came back later and the trading forums had been added and I decided to join. My name is Susie.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I am justmeLisa because I am...justmeLisa..heh heh..I really wanted "Lisa" but another one beat me here. I would like to change it to cajun something of the other, but too many know me.. as.. well...just me...Lisa. (I really like smilin32's story, that is the age I started to smile again too)

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9A)

I grow a number of euphorbias and a lot of bromeliads, so...

My regular email address includes "mosasaur" - this is a type of seagoing reptile from the Age of Dinosaurs - my wife and I found one on our first wedding anniversary. That's ex wife now, unfortunately. But what a way to celebrate!

I am a native Texan and manage to survive hot and dry weather, so I picked one of my favorite Texas natives and...voila...lantana (sometimes horrida). My real name is Pat.

Durham, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

mines a name i picked for a dreamcast game, it sounds quite mysterious, and i'd liked the name from frasier's wife on 'cheers'.

Marclay - nice to meet another 'shirley', that's me too!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

It was one of those "notmartha" days-no weeds in her gardens and organized drawers-no dirt under her nails, no scratches,pickers,slivers--a cut even!! A latin gardner,a potting shed and a cake that takes 2 days to make!!!!!
It was either martha, martha, martha or "notmartha"! Im kinda a practial joker! ;-]

Not to creative here...Gloria is my name and that was taken so Glory was the easiest to remember.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I picked my name because every winter this is what I become.LOL. Especially last winter with snow knee high to a giraffe most of the winter I spent most of it inside looking out the window at the three feet of snow on the ground and praying for spring. I even welcomed mud season. My real name is Terry.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Wow, with all of this creative thinking,I feel kind of boring. My real name is actually my DG name too. Melody here, but my friends call me Mel.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

k is for karla

mom is because i enjoy being a mom - and, this was originally the name i used when auditing my kids' email. I send notes to their friends such as "just a note to tell you, mom reads all her kid's email :-) kmom246"

246 was an arbitrary number because @yahoo.com already had a kmom, a kmom1, a kmom2, etc.

I've been kmom246 for so long now (years) that I respond to it as easily and normally as karla.

and, yes, I break my own rules for my kids by using my real first name at DG...

For a while, I went by Gardengal on a few sites. I decided to start going by Gardenwife so folks might have an inkling that I am married. Now it's just stuck and I use it almost everywhere.

I was going to register gardenwife.com, but someone beat me to it just days before I checked it. Bahhh!

:o) Kimberley

P.S. Guess where Gardenhubby got his name, LOL.

I was having a hard time coming up with an online name that I could stick with on any and all sites. I wanted something that was discriptive of me but not too hard to remember. I figured if it was available on AOL then it would be pretty much my own. I tried a LOT of names that would have all been copies with numbers added until I sat musing about it and finally came up with Zanymuse. That was 5 years ago and I still use it everywhere and have not yet run into another me. In my offline life I am Brenda and there are a lot of those around.
My first choice for a name was BEAUTIFUL but it was taken and I decided against false advertising. I Thought about using "YES DEAR" because that is how DH usually answers me when he isn't paying attention to what I am saying. I thought about using a flower name but until I came here and found out about Dranunculas I couldn't find a flower that was odd and smelly enough to be descriptive of me. I could have used Stinkweed or skunkweed since they both seemed appropriate somehow but my AOL search showed they were taken. I am not on AOL anymore but I am still using my Zanymuse name.

Well, like a couple of others, my name IS Kathleen. I was GrandmaKat on another site for awhile - Tom was sitting in my lap when I signed on and I said I needed a name. He was very puzzled by that and told me I HAD a name, it was GrandmaKat. The problem with that was that everyone thought I was ancient and wise LOL! When I finally signed on here after 'visiting' several times and thinking it was probably too good to be true, I just came as me. Our email and the name we go by a couple of other places is Hillfarm, a description of our farm and the title of one of my books of poetry.

Park Hill, OK(Zone 5b)

I borrowed the name of my business, Herbin' Center, from some friends known as the Herbin' League who make music and herbal concoctions. They call me the herb lady around these parts, or Diana.

Baa is my nickname, although at work it became Little Bo Peep because I changed from farming and the foot and mouth crisis (sick people I work with LOL)

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

I chose flowerpot because even though we have lots of gardens, I still plant a lot of flowerpots. When my DH and I got together he had a condo, on the beach and we couldn't garden in the sand. So we made shelves out of barn boards and bricks on our deck. Then went to yard sales and picked up all kinds of differant things you could plant flowers in. This man made me smile again at 45. Hence the Flowerpot name, and was so surprised that no one else had it. My real name is Linda.

Hi everyone. This thread is fascinating reading for a newbie.

When I was pregnant with my 4th baby, I read or heard somewhere that newborn babies will respond to the music you play or sing to them before they're born. I figured, well, SURE, if you sing LULLABIES. What does THAT prove? ALL babies respond to lullabies.

So I tried a little experiment on my itty bitty guinea pig (now named Kevin). I sang Mac the Knife to him at least once a day, learned to play it on the piano, played the tape over and over in the car.

Sad to say, Kevin showed NO signs that he recognized Mac the Knife as a newborn. I figured my experiment was a failure and smugly decided that the "experts" were wrong.

THEN, when the baby was about 6 months old, we were watching TV and nursing and I flipped the channel to a PBS special. Some guy in a tux was singing Mac the Knife with a full orchestra, and Kevin WHIPPED his head towards the TV (without letting go, of course) as soon as he heard the song.

So, Mac the Knife has a special place in my...uh...heart. Suky Tawdry is one of Mac's "molls." For those who are too young to remember, the line goes: "Jenny Diver, Suky Tawdry, Liza Lania, and Lucy Brown. The line forms on the right, girls, now that Mackie's back in town."

I have this little female ruby throated hummingbird who is just the meanest little thing!! She chases all my other hummers away and even tries to chase away the finches and doves from my other feeders!! I have a very small back yard and she thinks she owns the whole darned thing!! She is so fun to watch because she trys so hard to keep all three of "her" feeders free from others and sometimes the other hummers try to trick her, no kidding! One will distract her while the other eats! At least that's how I see it.My real name is Heidi.

It just wouldn't do for me to not participate in this fun thread.

In mid August I wrote up some tools to help me maintain a tradelist. I didn't have any kind of username or anything, of course, and the site was called "Dave's Gardening Site".

People started coming around asking if they could maintain their own lists also, so I setup a signin mechanism and allowed others to have their own lists. This meant that I needed a username for myself.

Not thinking much about it, I quickly typed in 'dave' for the username, and left it at that.

In previous online communities (going back 13 years for me), I was known as "Lone Wolf". That was my name for years and years, until I finally married Trish. Then I changed my nickname to "Sirwolf", and she was "Ladywolf".

Today, I am just dave, Trish is just Trish, and we named our computers "Sirwolf" and "Ladywolf". :-)

Dave
