Drink Coffee ?

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

*smile* Saw this thread earlier, enjoyed it, didn't post (I'm real new here) then just now as I logged back on I saw the vote about the coffee threads....... what's funny is right before that I was thinking how coffee grounds make such excellent compost material and can be added directly to the soil in some situations and may be something I am going to save for exactly that (direct app rather than compost)

so anyway, thought I would mention it here.

I have to have my one-sometimes-two cups in the morning, with half and half please. ;-)

ciao for now,
Kyla L

I know a lot of people use coffee grounds in the potting soil and compost, has anyone noticed whether it has helped in keeping pest down in any of the container plants.
I know some smokers, take nicotine, left over form the butts, and mix wither water and let soak for a few days and use it in a spray bottle for killing pest on plants as well.

LOL Its time to drink coffee. Boy, is the wind here cold. A cold front moved in and we are getting some chilly north wind. I opened the window in the bathroom and thought why do I have the ac on. So I opened all my living room windows and we are all covered in goose bumps but it smells so fresh. Now I'm going to have to see if I have any coffee. I think all I have is years old. Mmmmm.. I might have some vanilla hot chocolate. I need to go see. LOL

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Strong north cold wind here today, had all my coffee drank by 9am at work, had to suffer the rest of the day, with caffeine withdrawals!!!!!

(Zone 7a)

Oh, Tropicman! Sorry to hear of your lose. ☺ Perhaps a run to a coffee shop at break?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

If I drink coffeee from the vending machine first then my coffee,I can handle it,but I can't stand to drink it after I've had my folgers from home !!!!!!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Ha, I am with you. I have a really nice cup that keeps coffee warm for quite some time. I have to take my own coffee from home.

It is not always the coffee brand, but the water too. We are lucky enough to have a tap into an underground spring. (a hand pitcher pump). We use this water for all our drinking water, to make coffee or tea and for making beer and wine. It really, really makes a difference.

Water that has all the minerals taken out is flat, water that has additives has a taste to it. This taste flavors the coffee in not a good way.

(Zone 7a)

We've been using filtered water so long that I can't drink the coffee made with the tap water.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'm using city tap water here, although I have great tasting well water, but haven't even thought of using it,might have to give it a try and see if there's a big difference in taste!

Paris, IL(Zone 6a)

There is a difference in the water. When I go to my sister's in town and have coffee it tastes worse than coffee out here in the country from a well. Both of us use Folgers. I've made coffee in town and it had the same off-taste so I know it's not something Sis is doing differently.

We are lucky to have two wells. The old one would get low in the summer (or when company came for a few days) so we drilled a new one. The new line runs through a water softener for washing clothes and taking showers. I rigged the old well to supply water to the cold side of the kitchen sink and the ice maker in the fridge.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Just wondering how deep to good water, and does it have the mineral or iron taste in it?

Paris, IL(Zone 6a)

The old well is 17' deep and 3' diameter. Top of water level is 13'. No mineral or iron and no sulphur taste. The Public Health department tested it in 2000, when we drilled the new well and declared it highly potable or reasonably pure.

The new well hit water at 26' and we kept drilling to 42' so we could have a resevoir. It is 3' in diameter. The water is potable but with a higher ratio (ppm) of minerals, iron and a touch of sulphur. The wells are 150' apart. The water tasted okay before the water softener was added. Now I taste the salty brine when brushing my teeth.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Just curious,do you live pretty close to a river?
I live about a mile from the Arkansas River, water depth is 11ft,and my well is 24 ft deep, never had it tested ,but has a good taste, but I only use it for my gardening.

Paris, IL(Zone 6a)

No. No river. The closest one is ten miles and it's barely worth the title of river; closer to a wide creek. I live on the prairie in the middle of corn and soybean fields. The nearest town is six miles. There is a village of 300 people four miles away. There is a drainage ditch for excess surface water 250 yards away.

Put some well water in a jar and take it to a local water treatment plant or public health department for testing. It's not very expensive. It might even be free. The well water may be better for you than tap water.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Our good hand pump well is only 20'. Our well for our house is 188'. The further you go down the nastier it gets. (of course you do not want surface water) We lucked out into tapping that underground stream. This same stream surfaces about a hundred yards away and boy is that water cold!

The deep well was tested and came back good drinking water. (because of no bacteria I guess, I am sure NO ONE thinks it tastes good!) You can't even fix it with expensive purifiers.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

How strange, here in Kansas we say the deeper the better the drinking water,Ive heard them say that also in Oklahoma too!
Makes me wonder if that is true in other parts of the country as well.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Hmmmm, maybe the great lakes has something to do with it, or maybe because there is alot of sulfer/iron etc after a hundred feet, at 200 you can get salt water.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Interesting!!!!
I always thought the deeper the purer the water!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Coffee.. mmmm ... save the grounds for your plants! ;D

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep and your banana peelings!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

and your coffee containers LOL I use all the ones I can get too! ;D

Today I need coffee! A cold front moved in and it is cold. Well alright its chilly. But it is raining and the wind is blowing too with a little thunder and lightening. I still have the windows open because its not cool enough in the house without some air.

This is going to be my excuse to buy that coffee creamer I saw yesterday. It was "Chocolate Mint something" I can't remember the last word. I was looking at the milk section when I saw it and boy did it look good.

(Zone 7a)

Go get it and enjoy it, Amber.

We went to a cafe and had some very good coffee. I don't remember the brand, though.

How many Starbucks have closed in your city?
I believe 3 have closed there doors here!
Remember when you went out to eat and coffee and tea were free with the price of your meal????
Now the price of a cup of coffee,or glass of tea, cost what the meal use to cost!!!LOL

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

My DD just moved to St Louis. The loft appt she moved into has a free coffee bar in the lobby. She said she is sooooo in trouble now.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I still have three Starbucks in my town no more than one mile apart from each other and on the same road? One was taken over and remodeled from an old Pizza Hut and has a drive up window which I find to be very convenient. The other is in a large outdoor shopping mall and has very unique and comfortable outdoor seating plus a water fountain. All seem to be doing well! Go figure at an average of $4.50 for a speciality drink of which my favorites are cinnamon dulce and pumpkin spice.

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh how I wish I could drink coffee every day!

I cannot drink coffee because one cup of the stuff will make me depressed (crying jags, nobody loves me, life is not worth living) and a little paranoid (I just know the two people in the next cube are talking about me) about 2 - 3 days after I drink it.

And it's not the caffeine - decaf coffee does the same thing to me!

I can handle one to two cups a month, and it does not bother me, but once a week or more sends me to the loony bin.

I am wondering if any of you have ever heard of this problem??

(Zone 7a)

I have never heard of this problem. Have you talked to your Dr.? Maybe you have a allergy to something in it.

Coffee does the exact opposite to me. The world is a little brighter WITH coffee.

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

Well, if I did talk to my dr. he would just say "don't drink it then!!" LOL

(Zone 7a)

LOL Very true!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

But it is coffee! Is it possible to live without it? Air, food, water and coffee, right?

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

cpc, so far I have NOT managed to live without coffee!! Most of the time I do okay, and view it as a real treat, but sometimes I am a "bad" girl, have too much, then have to suffer through the depression.

My favorite right now is the bottled Starbucks Frappuccino!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I have just the opposite if I don't get enough coffee!!!

(Zone 7a)

Tapping toes and fingers, eyes getting droopy, snapping at family and co-workers, disorientation...all signs of me needing coffee! LOL

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Me too!

Seminole, OK(Zone 7a)

I got a cup of coffee at work this morning. Since posting on this thread I have been trying more coffee. This morning there wasn't any sugar so I thought i will just use coffeemate I can wing the sugar thing. I have been drinking half a cup for several mornings. Its been cold. LOL Took ONE drink and had to throw it out. Yuk, must have sugar. I guess I haven't been making much coffee drinking progress. I'm still going to buy that chocolate mint coffeemate. LOL

(Zone 7a)

I have a problem with mint and chocolate together. I can't but let us know how YOU like it.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

As a kid growing up,had to have sugar and milk, then when became teen, black was the only way,now no sugar ,just coffeemate, wonder how much smoking, nicotine played in my coffee drinking days?
First thing every morning ciggy and java, was the first thing, never ate breakfast!
Quit smoking 15 yrs ago, still miss it every morning, when I have my coffee, and after a big meal at nite!

Seminole, OK(Zone 7a)

Learned something new at work yesterday. It was a little after 7:00 am in the breakroom, I was waiting to get a cup of coffee and the lady in front of me was stirring her coffee. Another lady asked her if she just saw her empty a packet of hot chocolate into her coffee. She said yes that she had half the store hooked on this. You add hot chocolate and cream to your coffee and she calls it "Redneck Cappacino."

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

ROTFL

Sounds like I have been missing something. I will have to try that.
