Yes they can, Jaye... my dad wasn't being cruel... but kids at school had other names to call me, and they were being cruel...

My Dad wasn't creative enough to have a nickname for me. But all the negative adjectives he could think of, he attached that to my name.
Just made me determined to prove to him, I can be the opposite!
Time for a new room, don't ya think?

Editted to add - my mom wanted to name me Bonnie for the little daughter in Gone With The Wind, her favorite movie. (next daughter she named Melanie) Dad said "Bonnie Jones" was too plain. She got out the baby books and found the nickname for Bonita was Bonnie, both meaning the same thing. Bonnie it was until I showed up for kindergarten. The teacher called out "Bonita Jones" and I didn't answer - I didn't know! Came home crying. NY didn't permit use of nicknames, so I became Bonita. my first boss didnt like Bonita, so it was back to Bonnie. Even my family is split. Older brother calls me Bonnie, younger sises call me Bonita. DH calls me "pretty pretty" from both!

DG would not take either, so I became BonJon.

Nana was named Nellie, for the family's mule.

Mom was name Jenny, and yup, she was from Missouri.
