Anyone who grows "as lovely a garden as you" is surely as lovely both near and afar.

:-)

I haven't blushed since I was a teen. Is that SHakespear???

Has to be someone! As I am surely not that poetic. I think it is on an iron garden plate I have from grandma that used to be in her garden. Some other things in there about pure in heart, etc. etc., but ... I did just eat lunch.

;-)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You're so your teeny tiny in that globe.
What's the flower in post 5409514? I like it.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I love those garden signs. They have such beautiful ones. Those flowers are suprise lilies. Here are some looking in the old garden mirror. BEV

Surprise Lilies are very nice, I remember running across them once thinking I had to get some and forgot .... Thanks for the reminder.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Here's one of grandma's cast garden phrases.

Hmmmm maybe a nice idea for a thread?

WYN, That would make a nice thread. Are those Chinese Lanterns?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I started one, we shall see

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/889888/

Those ARE!!! Chinese Lanterns, ALREADY!!! Oops did I yell, sorry!

:-)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

watch out for the Chinese lanterns - very invasive - i ripped out a patch this year and have been dousing the stragglers with round-up. lanterns were nice - foliage not

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

dragonfly, I wish I could catch the hummers at the flowers.

willie, very artsy ;0) Those are wildflowers, not weeds. the loosestrife is very pretty, it's unfortunate that it takes over and chokes out the native plants. Your profile says you live in Buffalo...do you live in the city? it looks like you have a pretty large lot.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Actually, I am in Cheektowaga. Totally typical suburban plot. I think it is an eighth of an acre. I am VERY fortunate in that there is a "buffer zone" between the residential and commercial zone. Across the back (south) side of about 9 of our lots. Maybe 3 football fields or so long, hooking south at the west third another football field's worth.

An Island of fields surrounded by houses and businesses.

And, if you get really REALLY low to the ground when you take your pictures, you don't see all the busses, buildings, trucks ......

This is the view to the west, most of us mow (not our property) a good strip down to lawn to keep the weeds down in our gardens

Looks cozy, Willie. Love them clouds!

This is my first ever canna.

Thanks, Nance!

Dad did good pickin' out the plot, didn't he!!

I totally love that it has the feel of being in the middle of nowhere while actually less than 1/2 a block from the busiest, most over-developed corner in the town.

I totally thank him (in thoughts) everyday!!!

Here is a view directly south where you can see the fence line, not too much room there, but just enough. I like getting low to take the pictures, which blocks out the businesses and enhances the sense of depth.

Sure did! and you do a great job with the photography. I never would have guessed. I thought maybe one of the deep lots over in the zoo area, but those are narrow. Even with a double lot it would be tough to get those shots without another house poking in. And most of the suburbs don't have have the 'clump of oaks', just maybe a maple or some ornamentals.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Lots of nice pictures today so far as usual.
JoAnn your lily is going to be even prettier tomorrow and I can't wait for the update.
willieB you have some of the nicest "weeds' around and I enjoyed the tour all around your property. You are right your Dad did real good.
Robin thanks for the ID of wiilieB's cute little bird's nest fungus and that very pretty yellow glad could light up any garden.
DF62 your very colorful series of BES and gazing ball in the sunlight was really nice, each one is special all on its own, mostly the one with your reflection. :) I think I will have to get some surprise lilies they are so pretty.
Nan your first canna is a beauty, mine never did get planted this year.

Isn't Conca d'Or great! It's such a big lily and lovely too!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Couldn't believe the scent.
Three feet tall first year, not up to RC's but I doubt any of us will see that giant again.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Ge1836, sat it ain't so! "Fall"? My canna's are just starting, planted them way to late.

Love the color of nanegoat's. My dahlia's are also going to be very late.

I vote for the last photo of dragonfly's as it just glows.

I do love Conc d ore. Where are mine??? I have to go see what happened to them. I don't have may lilies left to bloom. Sad. Here is Red Dutch. Seems to be blooming very late. Pictured with Loraine Sunshine Heliopsis, Rose Marmalade Skies and a favorite yellow NOID DL that I have had for years.

Love your fleurs.
My Red dutch bloomed a month ago with Margurites.
It will bloome next year with Loraine Sunshine I planted a month ago.
I love the reds with verigates.
Your day on the water looked fantastic.

Lovely pics Patti...you glad is beautiful! I planted mine really late and have yet to see a bloom!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I se Monks hood with the blues and pinks.
I can't seem to grow it.
The plants that live never flower, moved them around in the garden but na-da.
I love yours.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pixie, I planted my glads, cannas, dahlia's and caladiums all late. Not getting much of a show and may not.

GE1836, I love monkshood, but some years it does, and some it doesn't. And always rather sparse. I have planted several types. But none do very well. This one seems to be very short and scrambling along the ground.

Some random shots lumped together from yesterday. Vitex is very happy this year. I planted some other varieties this spring, but they were tiny starts, so it will be a while. Also the Hydrangea 'Limelight' is a second year plant for me that I love and I got it from a great sale that Parks had in 2006. It is a late blooming one that I adore with the greenish young heads. The white borage is a surprise. I started them from seed, but assumed they would be tall. I have to check and see if they are suppose to be very late and short. Sounds like me. Patti

beautiful as always Patti.

Found this old photo rummaging through the debris I call home and thought I would share it with you.

This is Great Grandma's (and Grandma's and mom's) modest home in Trumansburg, NY (you know, the "house at the top of the hill") sometime around 1900, I am guessing. I have many fond memories of summers well-spent there growing up. It is now the village offices and police station, and thankfully so, as I don't know how I would be able to keep up such a treasure. I believe "Granny" was the village's "first" librarian.

I remember this house hidden by a row of HUGE hemlocks across the front of the porch, but, here it is, bare, exposing her impressive porch detail. You might even catch a glimpse of one of Great Grandpa's livery fleet in the lower right. How's that for dated!

I should drive by and snap a couple of shots of this beauty as she looks today.

I really miss "This Old House." And yes, as a kid we were scared $*&+less of that old "haunted" house, most exciting!! Don't get me started on the Creepy Portraits or the "Old Root Cellar" or the Barn's Loft. Brrrrrrrrrrr. All those strange sounds ......

I think I see something in the upstairs window .....

:-)

Hi,I was so surprised when you said you summered in Trumansburg.
I grew up in Ithaca and left the area in 1954.
My sister just returned to the area and bought a house in Trumansburg. She has always loved a smalltown atmosphere after loving in San Fran and New York City.
She walks to the post office and Library.
I visit often and we "do" the nurseries.
I will send your great grandmothers house to her.
Thanks for posting it.

Rummage some more, Willie! What a fantastic picture. I love the 'feel' of the it.

Patti, omg - love the collages. That fence in the last set is cool and always love seeing the bluestone. What is the purple flower in the middle left hand column of the pinks, whites and purples? Your grounds are so inviting!

JoAnn - oooooh, Conca d'or is beautiful.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

WNYwillieB, What a beautiful house. More than modest. A true gem. My dad was from near there.

Nanegoat. That fence was a simple solution to my dogs taking short cuts through part of the garden. It is one of those expandable bamboo ones ( found for 8.00 on sale per section) that we stretched it out to be about 6 feet by 4 feet and then we tied with jute an extra piece of bamboo across the top plus three verticals that stake it into the ground. We made three of them. Works well. Easy to move. Here is another picture of it taken on July 22. This one has two sections. We have another which is just one section long. This is there third summer.

The purple one is the Aconitum, Monkshood. Patti

I went to a garden talk at the library many years ago--the head honch for WFF was speaking---I asked why I couldn't grow monkshood, & he asked in front of 50 people, who I was trying to poison! Anyway, I did get it to grow in partial shade, & it has been reliable since. Nice photos, everyone--loved the surprise lilies! Jo Ann, your Conca d'or is blooming much later than mine did. Willie--great story on the house. Here is monkshood just about to pop.
