Wren: What a wonderful job with the sequence of that bud to bloom! Really great! I think those photo's would make an amazing collage to hang on the wall!

Each photo got better and better. I didn't think it could be any prettier than the 11:49 p.m. shot from last night and I didn't figure it would open any farther but WOW, the 4:00 a.m. photo is just Beautiful! You should be very proud of that bloom and your pic's!

Lin

edited to add: You should upload some of those pic's to the Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2443/

I am glad that y'all injoyed the pictures. I think I will take a nap to day.

(Zone 1)

LOL Wren ... I feel like I could use a nap too. I went to bed at 1:00 a.m. and was up at 6:30 ***** ^_^ ***** Yawning my head off now! I've never been able to nap during the day for some reason but I think today I may just be able to fall asleep!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for taking the time to share your bloom.

Now the wait for Laura's begins!!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Here is an update with mine this morning, any ideas as to when she will open?
Laura, can you post an update of yours please!

Clemen: she looks like she is ready to blast, too .... maybe tonight, but certainly within the next couple of days, it appears! Nice job!

Here is a shot of a Hookeri (strictum) that I missed!!!

Here's an oxy bud that I will probably miss :-

(Zone 1)

Oooh, more night time blooms awaiting? I hope y'all will be able to get pic's of them. I'm going to keep watching this thread.

I went out again and looked at my E. hookeri buds, still no change. I am bound and determined to see those blooms opened this time but I bet it's going to be next week before mine open.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

How big are your buds. From the pictures it will be about a 5 to 10 days. Unless they are a different kind of epis. Rememeber that mine was 12 inches long and 6 inches around the thickest part of the bud and it was a little undersize do to not getting the right care. This what it looked like just a day before it opened

(Zone 1)

Is your Epi the Oxypetalum (Queen of the Night)? Mine was ID'd on DG as the Epi hookeri and the buds look a bit different.

I just went out and took a pic of one of the buds.

WIllie you can't miss the blooms, we want to see them open right guys, yours too Lin. Wren mine is about 5 inches long, so I guess I have more waiting time, it's been 3 weeks since I first notice the tiny buds growing! Clemen

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I am guessing it will be two days out, but, you never know.

That's how I keep missing mine!!!!

I will let y'all have a peek at mine, for sure

(Zone 1)

This is one of the Exotic Angel Plants that I bought at Wal-Mart a couple of months ago. It was labeled Epiphyllum Oxypetalum "Queen of the Night": http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2443/ But EA always mislabels their plants so I will not know for sure until it blooms.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes mine is the epiphyllum oxypetalum. The leaves of your does look different. I have day bloomers that have leaves like that

Thumbnail by wren107
(Zone 1)

Wow Clemen ... it's been 3 weeks and they haven't opened yet? Gosh, that would drive me crazy ... I am very impatient! When I see buds I want them to open "Now"! LOL.

These are two unknown's I got as cuttings when I first joined DG ... they've finally started to grow, a lot of new growth this year. The one on the right has this weird long shoot coming out. I have no clue which ones either of them are and sure would love to see some pretty flowers sometime in the not too distant future!

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

The one with the long shoot may be a epis oxy like mine. It does that.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, the oxies have the wide wide wide leaves.

I thought you might like to see this one.

Here is a shot of one of my hylocereus that bloomed for me years ago, in the days before digicams! Haven't seen a bloom on it since, but I haven't pampered it in a while.

Please ignore the dust and scratches!! :-)

(Zone 1)

Oh, I will be thrilled if these are Day Bloomers!

Wow, Wren ... you sure do have a lot of Epi's! Is that the only plant you collect or are you like me and have a little bit of everything?

I do have one Epi (also a cutting in a trade when I first joined DG) that was labeled "Heaven Scent" which I hope means it smells heavenly! I have another that was a cutting in a trade that was labeled "Epi White Strictum". No blooms yet on any of them. Mine aren't growing very fast but it might help if I fed my plants once in awhile. ^_^

Here's a shelf with some of my cuttings

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Here is one that was simply labeled 'Red' at the GH where purchased.

Thumbnail by WNYwillieB
Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I am not sure, but I think Strictum is just another? name for Hookeri

(Zone 1)

Great bloom on that one Willie! And ... What dust? What scratches? LOL ... I am blind to dust - you'd hate to see my house!

I don't know much about Epi's, just that I love the flowers. I didn't realize that all Oxypetalum's have wide leaves! I know the Oxy has soft, pliant leaves whereas the big possibly hookeri that I have has very thick, succulent type leaves.

Here's my big Ric Rac which I didn't even know was considered an Orchid Cactus (didn't know it even bloomed) until someone here told me what it was. I don't particularly care for plants with thorns but after seeing photo's of the flowers for this one have decided to keep it. I also have another ric rac that I got in a trade about a year ago.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do have some of or have tried some of everything.
But the orchid cactus have always been a favorite but until last year I did not have site to buy from. I have only had a computer for about 3 years. But I do tend to get carried away when I like something.

Besids the price is low for the cuttings and shipping.

(Zone 1)

Wow! That red one is a beauty! Love it.

hmm ... I found this one in PF that says strictum is a cultivar of hookeri: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/130579/ No photo's to look at though. I uploaded my pic's to the one that just said Epi hookeri that I linked to in an above post.

I googled images of Epiphyllum hookeri: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=images+of+Epiphyllum+hookeri&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

and Epiphyllum hookeri strictum: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=images+of+epiphyllum+hookeri+strictum&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

I found this one that looks identical to my plant: http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Epiphyllum&species=hookeri
and it lists Strictum as one of the synonym's. And the same site shows this: http://www.cactiguide.com/keyword_results/ So, I guess the hookeri and strictum are one and the same. Sure can be confusing. I know there are many plants out there with the common name Queen of the Night. That's what my big hookeri was labeled when my friend gave it to me as a little thing back in the 1970's. I guess many think that's a good name for a night blooming cactus.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks! PlantLadyLin .... then, I guess you know where all the dust came from!! :-)

Wren: I get carried away, too!

I have ordered several from:

http://www.GotEpis.com

I think Jim is the name. Nice stuff, when it is in season, of course!!

The other is Pat at

http://www.epis.net

Awesome stuff there, too.

I have only lost one of all those I have ordered from them.

(Zone 1)

Wren, I can see how it is very easy to get hooked on the Epi's! I've been googling and looking at different sites and WOW ... some amazing looking flowers on some of them! I think it's a double bonus if they are fragrant! I have gotten hooked on Hoya's this past year and really love the blooms and fragrance of some of them too.

We have been in this house 33 years and I have accumulated so many house plants! It seems like I am always dividing and repotting anymore ... like a full time job. I keep saying I'm going to downsize but it's impossible to get rid of plants isn't it? Especially one's you've tended since they were tiny babies!

(Zone 1)

WillieB: Those are two of the sites where I've been drooling over photo's! I think in the spring I just might have to place an order!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, PlantLadyLin!! Red is getting all full of herself now!!

Names are so confusing, and even here on DG, there are discrepancies, mistakes, etc.

When people ask me what they are, I usually say "This one .... or, Dhat one"

I actually have mine, that was labeled 'strictum' on my Have List as hookeri.

:-)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have had great luck with the cuttings from both of them.

Though, the one that failed looked weak when I got it. I won't say which, as I think they both are great sources!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Most of my cuttings come from Gotepis.com/cart/ Jim Hunter is the owner, he is very helpful. The only problem is his cuttings go quick so if you see something you like get it when he has some.

the other site I have bought from is episgalleria.com very nice cuttings to.

Here is some of the seedlings I started last year.

Thumbnail by wren107
(Zone 1)

Do you grow them indoors or outside? I see those have thorns! I am bad with thorny plants ... said I would never own another plant with thorns. I have a couple but many years ago had a large desert cacti collection .. talk about thorns!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

They are out side I have a makeshift shade house for now..The babies will lose the thorns as they grow up. They are not too sticky. Jim told me that it takes 5 to 6 years to grow to blooming size, thought if I feed each watering they might bloom when 3 or 4 years. I did not know that when I started.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah .... these epi spiny thorns are nothing!! Those Opuntia, however!!! Those are the ones I am REALLY careful around!

I know they take a long time to bloom, some probably do get lucky with budding in 3 or 4 years.

Jim and Pat's epis go so quickly, I guess, because they are good growers of healthy plants.

I also read somewhere that these only bloom from a point on the leaf but once. After all those points have bloomed, no more. Time to make it a new plant.

Slightly off track, but here is a shot of part of the cacti / succulent collection.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Wren, your photos were exquisite of this beauty!! For those of you familiar with this plant, I have one that was simply called orchid cactus, given to me by a friend. It blooms only once yearly but the wait is definitely worth it. For such a "gangly" looking plant, the blooms are knockout.

Thumbnail by bugme
Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I love the collection.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Love the flower.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I was just outside checking on my cactus. The thorns on the babies are fairly soft. Every one is growning. I will soon need to repot. I am sticking with the clay pots. They do not hold the water as long as the plastic do.

(Zone 1)

WillieB: Now that is what I call a cactus collection! Great looking plants!

Bugme: That is one Beautiful Flower! I LOVE pink and that one is really Awesome! I would sure be a happy epi camper if one of my noids turned out to have pink blooms!

Wren: Thanks for the info about soft thorns! And, it sure is good to know they won't be thorny as mature plants. I agree that clay pots are probably the best for Epi's because they don't hold all the moisture that the plastic ones do.
