I could just kick myself! Had to separate a roo that had been living with all, my WCP, a couple of days ago. Not sure what brought it on. They were tearing him up - bloody head, messed up eye. Got his eye & bleeding all better. Tried putting him back in, but they just came after him again. Have no idea what he did. So, just let him free range for now with the 2 hens that fly out all the time.

Well I didn't get back early enough tonight to put him to bed (hens fly back in) & now I can't find him. Been out looking with a flood lamp, couldn't have gone far -- nothing yet. At least no sign anything got him - no feathers. Gonna look some more before I turn in once the light is re-charged.

Just needed somewhere to vent about myself! Sometimes I just don't think! Thought there was enough light left...............dang it all :-(

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

oooh! I hope you find him! it wasnt the one with the broken crow was it?

Lodi, United States

Oh, Peafowl--let us know what happens!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Peafowl hope you find him this morning. Keep us posted.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Well, I caught up with my veggie garden! Picked another 9 quarts-that gives us 36 quarts so far this year. About 2 weeks ago we planted another 90 feet of bush beans for another go around! Had to pull up the swiss chard and feed it to the cows. It became very bitter, I think it was from a lack of water. So if ambition strikes, I'll put in another row of swiss chard.
The animals have been thoroughly enjoying the garden this year! Turnip greens shared among the bunnies, chickies, and the cows. And the pigs have been chowing on overgrown squash or any we haven't eaten.
The cows Really enjoyed the peas-the Jersey learned how to 'walk' up the fence and crush it down-he and his accomplice(the holstein) ate 50' of peas(they were taller than me!)ate all the chinese cabbage and pruned the top of the tomato plants! They were so full from their adventure they weren't even interested in a bucket of grain! After 30 minutes of coaxing, they finally returned to their pasture. Now there is a 4 strand electric fence surrounding them!

hey all! i just got a text from sis (Peafowlanjl) she found her roo this morning... a lil wet cause it rained...but he's okay! yeah!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Yea!!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh thank goodness for that! I was so worried about what she might find...

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

she said there were bats and owls and foxes last night... I'm sure she didnt get much sleep!
just glad he's home safe :o)

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Sis, scared the coyotes off (don't even know if we have foxes - never heard or saw any). Not much you can do about owls and of course the normal bats - don't know if they will go for chickens or not.... He looked like a drowned rat! lol & sleep? hardly - out til 2 looking for him. Hard to find black in the dark with a whimpy battery. Recharge every 5mins.
Already 'tucked' in, ain't taken no chances tonight! He came out of the briars -- must of been comfy??? And the WCP is the one that doesn't crow, i've never heard. Just chases the girls around all the time. Sure looks lonely right now..

Them cows sure did a number on your garden Sue. What a feast, huh? Wonder what they'll think when they find the table has been 'shut down'?? Can just imagine the look on their faces when they found out.......lol

Jordankittyjo, you getting peacocks? Adults? What breed? Inquiring minds (me) want to know....

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

This is just one of my greatest fears about acquiring chickens - I am so scared of anything bad happening to them and feeling like it is completely my fault and never living down the guilt if something happens. It scares the living daylights outta me.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Claire, If that happens, you will get through it. But, in the Eglu, they should be safe. Just make sure you put them to bed at their normal time if you let them out. I certainly should have known better! Also, knew I was in trouble the minute I got home & saw all the 'shadows' in the yard. Knew he couldn't see in this & would have gone to bed long before that......It will not happen again (he was in bed, whether he liked it or not a 6:30). Right now, they tend to head to be at about 7:30, when the sun heads over the hills.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Glad the roo is fine! Who gives us more gray hairs-the kids or the chickies! Or is that like what came first?!

Granny sorry to hear your garden isn't doing much this year. Hope it perks up as the season goes along. I've had years where I ask myself, why do I bother!!

Sue ☺

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

Our garden is not doing too well either. Of course we had to pull up new ground this year, so we are pretty happy to be getting anything out of it. We wish it was doing better, for all the work involved. Overall, we are pretty happy we are getting anything....from what we have heard, no one has a good garden around here this year. Way too much rain, not near enough sun. Judging from the farmers market that is true. No one seems to have much of anything this year....its been almost all baked goods. Hopefully, next year will be perfect and we will all have a bumper crop!

Peafowl......I think that sometimes these scares happen to shake us up a bit and warn us....so that we are more careful in the future. I'm so glad your guy is ok!

Did we ever hear that beautiful kids name? She looks like a scoop of Rocky Road only girly? Y'know, Notcourtney?

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

She does look like rocky road.. lol

Farm life isn't always what it's cracked up to be. A cat killed 7 baby Bantams and i will never feel the same about the cat, who does not belong to me. My dogs would never do such a thing...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

grownut, I decide on stella.. its kind of long in story, but one of the boys that had started this stella story by suggesting chedda.. well I took him to church and he was telling, very proudly to all how he helped name this baby goat.. he was so proud.. and I realized.. I love my goat.. and she IS more than a goat to me... but to this boy naming her.. was WAY more than a name.. somebody in this world had listened to HIM... and I just really felt.. in that instant it was very important not to waver.. so my goaties name is forever:
"B.N.B. 1 Stella Wit Da Chedda"

Sherri, you are right, I am learning.. farmlife is not all it is cracked up to be... farm life is ALL.. I am finding a purity, an honesty... a work ethic that real lives depend on.. a calm I have never felt before.. a true sense of life and reason behind it..
Yes, terrible things happen... sickness, accidents, raging other animals.. right now I have a loved favorite dog.. all he wants to do is eat my baby goat.. hopefully someday he will realize that is not going to happen.. but I cannot blame him... she smells funny, she runs like a rabbit, she is jerky in movement, she chased his chickens.. and she makes a noise that will wake the dead.. I can only continue to be firm, yet understand who he is and what his weakness is and be prepared.. and trust in LOCKED FENCES!

I'm sorry, if this posts sound a little relegous.. it's not meant to be.. I just think I have found something very dear to my heart.. something I can believe in and work hard at, and my boundries are limitless!

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh Fran...You have just put words to what is in my heart also...My dogs are hunters...Poodles they may be, but that is what they were bred to do...They had one of the barn cats get in their fenced run the other night and I got to it before they could do any damage, but all 3 were trying to rid me of the *Vermin*....They chased birds in our city yard, so chickens would also be fair game...When I get the coop on the brooder house, they will be secure because I will put a top over the coop so the cats can't get to them, and the dogs will be in their own yard....

I drove nearly 600 miles yesterday loading and unloading wheelchair patients, and when I finally pulled into the drive and saw my home...I felt a true sense of peace and calm come over me as well...I am not meant to be in the city...never have been...I am finally at peace again...

Clarkson, KY

I'm with you the whole way!! This city girl gone farmer? Laughing, crying, screaming in frustration, maybe, but with you the whole way...

I have a daughter who names the ones I set my heart on naming and like you say -way more than a name.

She's gone country , back to her roots. So the song goes.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Grow...Someone on another thread in another forum called those of us who either stay on a farm, or go back to a farm, Idiots...they later deleted the post before I had a chance to Blow...Good thing I guess....I waited till the next night when I got home from work to respond to it so I wouldn't get toooo riled, but it was gone by then...I still may say my piece, but it will be a tad less than it would have been...

I just do not understand how people can justify condeming another persons choice of living or lifestyle...Mean spirited at best...

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Hey Sue baybeee... I gotta go down the hill tomorrow to get my check that wasn't ready by 4pm.... grrrrrrrrr!!
What time are you going to the market?? I have to hit my bank by 1pm so I need to leave here by 10:30 if I want to stop at the market..

My friend back in Ca all think i m crazy . Their phylosiphy is " why make it, when i can buy it ? " and i tell them " why buy it ,when i can make it ? " lolol its all how you look at things :)
I would much rather be around a bunch of rednack , hillbillys than a bunch of rich, city yuppies ! IMHO. But that is just me. :)
its all good .
Where you end up is the most important part of it all and how you treat your neighbor .
If no one shows up at your funeral , you got no one to blame but yourself . I always say IMHO :)

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, I haven't gone back to any roots.. I am a newark, jersey baby, born then raised in miami.. and never stopped.. longest I stayed anywhere was 8 years in alaska.. and oddly enough I didn't realize until one trip after living here for several years, I went to PA to visit family and when we came back, you know that last hour of a very long trip... I felt a calm.. peaceful feeling..looking around... for the first time in my life.. I knew I was home.. and I haven't felt that way since.. until now, with the animals, the fresh air and purpose!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh girls you have said it best. Country girl all the way here and I LOVE it. I dont have neighbors dogs barking all hours of the night, just mine, I dont have kids boom boxing me out with their music. Yes why buy it when I can make it and it is better.

Amen sisters

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

What time are you going tomorrow Miz Taynors????

Waipu, New Zealand

Hello everyone - I'm a newbie to this great site and live in New Zealand.

I'm really aiming the following at the "chicken" people, who hopefully can give me some advice.

I have six rare breed chicken eggs incubating and a week ago, we had a huge storm over the country
which caused a 6 hour power cut. I did what I could by putting hot water bottles in the incubator and kept the humidity up with a small flask of steaming water. It was a minute by minute vigil to try to keep the temperature steady. Unfortunately I had no way of circulating the air, but it seems six of the 8 chicks survived the trauma and one is cheeping loudly today, though there is no sign of the shell being pecked through as yet. I have candled the others and they are moving. (One, I could feel moving through the shell).

They were at day 21 yesterday, but I'm wondering if the problem we had with no power could have delayed hatch by a day or two and how long do I wait?

Any input you can give will be very welcome.

Cheers, Dords
