Best/Worse and What did I learn today? Friends pt.52

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

It's raining, it's raining again! Started last night but quit this morning. I planted two Dappled Willows, 10 Double Knockouts, transplanted a hibiscus, holly hock and a daylily clump with a list of plants a mile long yet to plant. But I'm not complaining. We need the rain worse than I need these plants in the ground.

Laura, I forget the time difference let along forget you are on the opposite side of the world sorta kinda with you having winter now and us having summer. I'd love to visit Australia. That's why I enjoy watching the discovery channel, get to visit other places the only way I can.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Deborah, glad it's raining...talking about places to visit...know you are on I-75 S...keeping that in mind this Dec. lol

Liz, was at Michaels today and guess what, they have links of all styles same length as we need, would just have to add the hooks for more bracelets for our watches...ran out of lunch time otherwise, who knows how many I'd have...but, they are $6.99 I believe and weren't they just 5.99 at Cracker Barrel..if so, you have to take a jaunt out for breakfast...

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

australia is so very interesting. i have not seen much of it myself would you believe? its cheaper to fly overseas than it is to explore our own country.
but it is beautiful and so varied.

if i drive and hour or two i can be in snow country.... the top of my street is the beach and 20 minutes out the open country. its just where i am that is like that.
we have big cities and all the rest of it too.
lovely flora and fauna.....rain forests.... all sorts of things...

it gets pretty hot in summer and cold in winter in melbourne but if u go to queensland it doesnt get all that cold.
depends where u are .

central australia, like a place called cooper pedi where they mine opals, they live under ground! yep its true, its so hot there they dig down to make their homes......its weird...

well have a great day.

oh the time difference

if its 12 oclock here wednesday, its 7pm tuesday there.. so i live in tomorrow land!

hugs

Victoria Harbour, ON

Really a varied country isn't it? Isn't it funny, everyone wants to visit someones country and yet we've not seen all of ours..I've never been out west, have been all the provinces east of me...

As for the USA if I look at my atlas of my travels, I've pretty well done more than 1/2 ..keep chipping off a few states each and every year! More to come..lol

What a mess, Sailor dirtied again in the rec room, she's hanging her head low but it's not her fault, she's getting old and it's a long day for her...usually Kathy or the girls have been here, see some signs of someone dropping by but not always does Sailor want out..and if she doesn't want to go out, she won't...but since I've opened all the doors to air house out she wants to play ball..in fact she's begging me to play..

Almost had a heart attack, doors are open and I can hear water running, thought I'd left the tub on, shhhshhh saved by the rain..pouring out there so no need to again water the flowers beds...

So, unless I can stay awake later than I think I can, I'll clean the broken glass (my swap project) from the craft tables, sweep up, have supper, bath and it's a good night for me...

Again you've made my day!!! Do enjoy your evening..

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

You always make my day, Betty. Sweet Dreams

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Laura I bet if your family or friends went to a place like Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers or one of those places, they may have people there who have nice clothes that they can't wear anymore so they would gladly donate them to someone who could still use them. I am dead serious. Two of my friends lost a lot of weight and they just were hanging onto clothes forever because they wanted to give them to someone who could use them, since they were nice.

It has been hot here.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Been lurking as usual, keeping up with all the comings and goings

Starzz, I have the Queen Josephine and it has put up the prettiest bloom stalk. Delicate blue/lavendar. I love it!! The other hosta is wonderful. I have a Sum and Substance that is suppose to get 6' so planned a spot to allow it to do so. I'm so thrilled as I could never get my hosta to grow at my other home. So far things are doing much better here!!!

Hello Deborah, surprise! I still say we need to get together and do some serious plant shopping. Or just getting into trouble. What ever!

Betty, the glasses you posted were beautiful. Geez you make me feel like I have to left hands!!!

Hello everyone!! Just dropping in to let you know I am still reading and kicking!!

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

Just heading off to bed. We just got home on the train on Monday. It is sooooo nice to be home. I'll make sure I get some computer time tomorrow to post about our vacation time. I'm too tired now to do it. Just wanted to let you know that we're home safe and sound.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Just thought I would make a last attempt at the thread before my pill kicks in. Nobody home.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning everyone, rained all night so ground will be mushy I'm sure..sorry to all who are in need of rain, told Mother Nature to pay you a visit...

Dawn, what a fantastic idea, that didn't occur to me but you are right, most of us keep all our clothing, I have a 'O' sized gown, I looked lovely in it, actually quite 'sexy' now I doubt it would fit over my leg..how times have changed...still say it's the 'pig' valve they put in my kidneys..

Not sure who is driving who this morning, know I have to drive in Thurs./Fri. again so hopefully today I can be a 'passenger'...

Didn't clean the craft room so off I go....hope Bell Canada comes to repair telephone before 1 as the girls leave then..will take Kathy's tel# with me in hopes she can spent the aft. they give you repair hours between 8am and 5pm..not good when you work in the city..

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Sorry I missed you Marion. Yes I'd love to go plant shopping, getting into trouble or both with you soon.

Gillibean, what train ride did you take? A passenger train? We have a small excurtion train that depots here in my town and takes people to the next county into Plains GA for the day. No depot for far away places though. Please tell about your vacation. I haven't had one of those in many years. Enjoy reading about folks taking vacations.

Hellnzn11, sorry I missed this thread before I went to bed. I would have kept you company until my pill kicked in. I played yahoo solitare until the wee hours. I didn't stay in be long before my babies, Katie and Kobe, begged to got pottie outside. Now I can't seem to go back to bed.

Betty, repair folks tell me the same thing. "We'll be by between the hours of 8:00 and 5:00. Well duh, that just ruins your day sitting around waiting all day. My lawn service slung a rock through my dinning room window a couple of days ago. Had to wait all day for a carpenter to "swing by between the hours of 9:00 and 6:00" so he said. He swung by the next morning. The glass cant be replaced in that sash. The whole sash must be replaced. That means finding paint to match both sides of a new sash. Grrrr.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Lots of work to repair something so small..as for Gillian, she lives way up in the northern country, DH teaches school up there, so she and family were here visiting family and just finished the trek home which entails driving to a certain location and then taking the train home..quite a process..very remote but they love it...

Am sure she'll let you know the more precise details as to mileage etc.

All cleaned up, ready for work and now I sit and wait a bit to determine if I'm going in on my own, or hitching a ride...

Nope, not asking the young ones for a ride, learnt that lesson the hard way..lol

THE POSITIVE SIDE OF LIFE:

Living on Earth is expensive,
but it does include a free trip
around the sun every year.

How long a minute is
depends on what side of the
bathroom door you're on.

Birthdays are good for you;
the more you have,
the longer you live.

Happiness comes through doors you
didn't even know you left open.

Ever notice that the people who are late
are often much jollier
than the people who have to wait for them?

Most of us go to our grave
with our music still inside of us.

If Wal-Mart is lowering prices every day,
how come nothing is free yet?

You may be only one person in the world,
but you may also be the world to one person.

Some mistakes are too much fun
to only make once.

Don't cry because it's over;
smile because it happened.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors....but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.

A truly happy person is one who
can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Have an awesome day, and
know that someone
who thinks you're great
has thought about you today!..

Working for God on earth does not pay much, but his retirement plan is out of this world..

Judy/Judy/Judy I'm in trouble..forgot the baby shower was this weekend..wanted to make the cake as a gift...think I can still accomplish this...???

Glenview, IL

Good Morning All!

Wow, when i miss a day, there sure is lots to read.

Don't fret Betty! The most time will be to go shopping. Woohoo, have fun with that.
Here are the ingredients and directions: I can walk you through if you need help.

Baby Cake Ingredients

2 hooded baby towels 1 Winnie the Pooh teddy bear
*4 receiving blankets 1 Wooden teether/rattle
*1 comb & brush set *2 infant feeding spoons
*1 binkies & 1 holder *1 Toddler Spoon & fork set
*1 toothbrushes 1 hat
1 books 4 sets of protective mits
4 sippie cups *8 sets of infant socks
*1 bottle 1 Peter Rabbit rattle
1 horse rattle 1 coozie blankie
2 bibs *1 bottle brush
**84 Pampers

“Baking” the Cake

Divide 84 diapers into three sections.

I *'d the basics.
However for the 3 tiered cake you will want to add other pieces.

Roll the first from bottom to top,
Add second around first and so on,
Pretty soon you will notice that the diapers will fit
End to end you just keep adding until a large disc is formed.

You will use the rubberbands to hold the forms as you add.
I use three different sizes. This will seem loose but you will add
To the bottoms tiers a few at a time, until desired size. Also,
The blankets will hold the final form together.

All three layers-you will need 2 bands, one at top and one at bottom
These are what holds the r-blankets in place.

Hint: The top layer, roll around a bottle and rubberband then continue.
-Also, the top layer should only be wide enough for one receiving blanket to
fit around it with an overlap.

Second layer, should also be wrapped by one receiving blanket
with only a slight overlap.

Third layer will use 2 r-blankets end to end.

Ok, the mits and socks are used as flowerettes.
Stick 2 fingers in and grab end of sock and mitt and pull until
You reach the end. It resembles a flower. these are used to decorate
The plate and anywhere there is a need for something. Just tuck them in
All the other pieces are inserted in and around the cake.

The Plate is made of a piece of cardboard I cut to size of bottom layer.
Usually I add a piece of paper, plain white or you can use baby wrapping paper.

All ingredients for this cake were used-the cake was loaded but
Turned out to be one of my best.

How much you add will be up to you.

Have loads of fun making and just ask if you need help.
I take about a week to make them just because things get shifted
All the time.

Here is a top view/so you can see how diapers are rolled.

Now, when I make them for other people I wrap them in clear office garbage bags for easy transport. This way they stay clean and people can see the cake. Very often they are opened immediatley and used as a table decoration at the showers!

Thanks Judy...will get out tomorrow night and purchase what I need....
Nothing like leaving it to the last minute...

Between 'swaps' / 'wedding trinkets - wine glasses/ baby shower-table and chair set' regular living duties...I'm pooped...lol

Just so funny, most of you know I had a colonoscopy and am waiting for biopsy results this week...girlfriend sent me the following....

Thought I'd post the following..always humour in everything right?

Dave Barry's Colonoscopy Journal

I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis.

Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner. I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really
hear anything he said, because my brain was shrieking, quote, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!

I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called 'Movi Prep,' which comes in a Box large enough to hold
a microwave oven. I will discuss Movi Prep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America's
enemies.

I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor.

Then, in the evening, I took the Movi Prep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one-liter plastic jug, and then you fill it with lukewarm water.

(For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about 32 gallons.)

Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because Movi Prep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon. The instructions for Movi Prep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose watery bowel movement may result.' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.

Movi Prep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but: Have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty much the Movi Prep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of Movi Prep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.

After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of Movi Prep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologize to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough.

At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said. Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked.

Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka in their Movi Prep. At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house.

When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand. There was music playing in the room, and I realized that the song was 'Dancing Queen' by Abba. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' has to be the least appropriate.

'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere behind me. 'Ha ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than decade.

If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like. I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, Abba was shrieking 'Dancing Queen! Feel the beat from the tambourine ... and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood.

Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that it was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors. I have never been prouder of an internal organ.

OMG Betty! I am here at work crying from laughing so hard! Having had two of these procedures done, I can totally relate to ALL of his details! HILARIOUS!!!!

So I must have missed the day you had your procedure. I'm assuming everything went ok but it sounds like they found a polyp? Didn't have a clue about those when the doc told me they had found one but was quite releived when they called to say it was ok - as I'm sure your will be! Prayers coming your way!

I'm wiping the tears away (from laughter reading the Barry column). I can relate to this procedure and will testify to its authenticity if needed. Just call me. LOL So sorry you had to endure it Betty. Glad it's over for you.

OMG, laughing out loud over here!

that is so funny a description. Yikes, so sorry you had to go through it too, but good thing they put you out for it. Lets just hope there is good results.

So, I went to the John melancamp Concert on the lakefront last night.
Wow, it was awsom. Nice mix of old and new music.
Was just a great oustide party, so much fun.
But the best part was the after show. We got backstage passes!!
My friend's sister plays the violin in the band!! So we got to meet her.
Then we were standing around and Steve says hey babe look it's John.
So I look and sure enough there he was no more than 30 feet from me.
He had lots of guards around but at a distance. So I wave and call out Hi Johnny!
He looks right at me waves back and said HELLO! Now I don't have to tell you how happy that made me. What a great way to end an evening.

Today...has been just a splendid summer day. Weather is awsom around 75ish, breezy. Oh wish i could just stay outside.

ahhwell, will be able to enjoy the weekend, man i just realized it is only wednesday...sigh.

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

That was so funny, Betty. Dave Barry has a knack for words.

I just came in from rescuing my garden from being completely overrun with weeds. Some of my tomatoes have BLOSSOMS! I'm so excited. Honestly, if I don't get anything else from my garden, I want tomatoes. It rained quite a bit while we were away so everything was nicely watered. (We have a friend who would have watered things if needed.)

So, about our trip. We left here on June 29 which was a Sunday. Cordeledawg, I live on an island near mouth of the Moose River which empties into James Bay. When we go on vacation in the summer, we take a boat over to the mainland and then get on the train. The train usually takes about 5 hours but since they're doing construction on the tracks, it took us about 7 hours - which means that we got in at 1 am. In the winter it's just a basic train with a snack car but in the summer they add a nice dining car and a sky-roof car. They also have a kid's car in the summer which is sooo nice. It's called the Polar Bear Express if you want to google it.

Here's a picture of Sonora in the boat going to Moosonee.

Keith had a conferernce near Orillia so after dropping him off, the kids and I continued on to Kitchener. We stayed with my dad while my mom was camping for a few days. That Friday we had a great time visiting with Carol. Sonora really enjoyed playing with Carol's granddaughter, Dana.

Getting supper ready. That's my dad in the picture with Carol. He used to live in Port Hope, which is near Newcastle. He really enjoyed the visit.

When it was time to go, Carol let each of the kids take something. Ian chose this castle which he said was a space ship. He had so much fun playing with it.

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

One of the things my Dad remembered from his days in Port Hope was 'the hole in the wall' where the highway went under the train tracks. Only one truck could fit through at a time so they would honk their horn before going through. We went to see it before going home.

Thumbnail by gillibean
Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

When I went to pick Keith up in Orillia when his conference was finished I left the kids at my parents' place. On the way back to Kitchener we stopped off at the Toronto Temple for our church. Later, we went to a nice Thai restaurant and had a nice date - something we don't get to do very often living here.
